This picture was taken in late 2001 iirc. Dude belonged to SF reserve irrc.

I might not like the fact since I was already an adult when the pic was taken, but at this point we need to call this: Retro or Vintage since it has been nearly a quarter of a century ago.

Depending on how old you are you got no idea how FRICKHUGE the entire "Hobo SOF Look" was back then. And a lot of it was sparked by this exact picture (actually there was a complete series with pics from different angles)

Up to at least 2005 the entire gun and .mil community was all about using civilian gear, wearing huge bumfighter beards and generally looking like they had slept in an alley under some trash bags.

This was the time. The US military had to give specific orders that forced SOF units to get back into their issued uniforms and at least police their beards a little bit.

If you see a dude nowadays who looks like he's in his late 30s or early 40s and he's still sporting a thick beard chances are somewhat realistic that he lived to see the OG craze - and probably hasn't shaved since Obama took office.

      >But WHY??
Because they wanted to blend in into the sandBlack person populations and look less than members of a huge green mean machine.

And as some other anon stated here: Lots of the stuff we consider basic nowadays wasn't even invented back then or only arrived at the ass-end of the 00s or even the early 10s.

I wonder what he's up to these days...
It's amazing how basic a lot of the military equipment issued back then was. They just made do with what they had. None of this endless obsessing about minutiae like all those guntuber homosexuals (who would probably just piss themselves if shit ever popped off)

                Anonymous

Well, GWOT sure sparked the guccification, that's for sure. Back then SOF dudes were always the first ones who got all the shiny operator stuff. In that regard GWOT even defined the trend of giving SOF dudes a shitton of stuff no regular grunt will ever see, let alone get issued.
SOF, for example, were the first guys who got rails, optics for ARs, WMLs, lasers the whole nine yards.
                >all those guntuber homosexuals (who would probably just piss themselves if shit ever popped off)
Some of them have a .mil background. But yeah, in general lots of people rely too much on hardware these days.
Just yesterday I got lots of flack here because I posted in a thread that I don't see a point in slide-mounted holosights/reddots for pistols.

People are quick to call you a poorgay these days if you don't follow the latest gucci trends. Perhaps I'm becoming a boomer but I still think getting really good with what you got gives you a distinctive advantage.

    >What Makes Him So Cool?
The fact that he is incredibly uncool.
He looks like a hick, in short, with that unkempt face bush, fratboy cap, unnecessary wraparounds, wife beater, and ostentatious never-used knoife.
He looks like the trashiest of white trash.
And from a soldier's viewpoint, like the American version of a Congolese janjaweed militia, and likely as (in)effective.

    But looks are deceiving.

That dude not only is in the Army, he's gone through Special Forces selection and training.
He's achieved a certain level of approval above that of most ordinary joes.
The black Sikorsky Chinook in the background and that arid, wretched, sandblown background highlights the fact that he's trained to use a wide variety of high-tech high-performance death-dealing equipment in the worst of environments.

And what's more, he's proficient enough that he gets away with dressing like white trash. This contrast sends the image a level above anyone else in uniform, and emphasises that what you fantasise about, he lives.

Same goes for James Bond - the captivating magic is in the contrast between his rich-cultured-playboy-with-trophy-model-on-his-arm appearance and his actual, deadly effectiveness as a licensed-to-kill spy.

Except Beardman over here is real.

Hes old SOF from back before they all had instagrams, and hes on an operation that very nearly ended the GWOT before it started without a single conventional unit deployed; which is badass whether they succeeded or not. Some homosexuals try make his image into a poorgay pride thing because he isnt wearing cryes, apparently not realizing that they wouldnt be in circulation for another 5 years and that all the gear he does have (including the full getup he wears in other pics) is gucci for the time.

I know it's cringe to bring up vidya, but I could've sworn that one of the characters in 'Medal of Honor' (2010) was modelled on this dude.

Can US reserve SF be applied for off the street, or do you already have to in the Army to go on selection?

  9. 3 months ago
    Anonymous

Other anons have said it but you basically had to be there at the right place and right time to understand the significance of this. It was the first time anyone had really seen what we think of as the “operator” type. When the concept of the military is clean shaven, standardized uniform, conventional forces, seeing this dude who looks like a Hells Angel was jarring. It pretty much was the catalyst for 20+ years of LARPing gays who wanted to get in on this. I know a lot of guys who were motivated to go SOF simply for things like “beard and gucci gear”.
