What is the best way to take care of leather boots?

Just got picrel: 5.11 Tactical XPRT 3.0 boots, and they are pretty solid for general utility.

My current protocol

> Silicone spray on outer synthetic and paracord shoelaces
> Brush leather, apply lard, wait to dry, brush, apply Bunderswehr TH. GEYER FLORAL cream, wait to dry, brush off.

Any better methods from vets or woodsmen? Unfortunately I just can't bother to get into dubbin, and I like the lard because it lasts for long and keeps the leather flexible.

Also, how often should I polish them if I wear them daily?

Op here, forgot to specify. I apply lard at most once a month if they've seen regular use, and polish once a week. Also the silicone bit is done once a year, and of course avoid the leather.

    Just did my maintenance today.
    Every six months
    >thorough clean
    >apply conditioner, wipe off excess
    >let soak in, wipe dry
    >polish, wait, buff
    >apply snoseal on boots

    On this
    >how often polish?
Literally doesn't matter, polish is just aesthetic dye. Conditioner is what's important, and I guess lard works? I use a commercial conditioner.

Okay, my boots as I said get snoseal anyway, and my nicer shoes are factory waterproofed not sure how that works but they're still beading water without any input from me.
I'm not trusting polish to seal my boots, they get beat to shit. Glob on some wax every time.

        [...]
Anything better than lard? Figured animal oils beat vegs by far, and that lard stays around forever.

Find a midrange+ one on Amazon or get a brand name like Allen Edmonds.
        >lard
Are you literally in Appalachia right now?
Imagine the smell of 6 month old lard covered boots...

The BW polish I buy is advertised as nourishing and waterproofing, No need to worry since all my boots are already waterproof full grain leather with membranes. I'd avoid commercial as they often use veg oils and other trash that harms the leather and doesn't come off.

Kiwi has wax. I used nothing but kiwi on two pairs of boots for 15 years and the soles were always the problem never the leather. Lard will go rancid.

No Kiwi where I live but we have Erdal, advertised with beeswax and other bunch of stuff might not be best for leather.

          Should have bought Salomon GTXs.

I have a pair for hiking. I switched back to leather because I froze my feet on some Adidas Terrex last winter.

          >lard
Lard will go rancid. Oil will make your leather too supple and it will lose its shape. Use a beeswax-based leather treatment.

I have some larded shoes in storage for 6 months now and that hasn't happened but I will consider that.

Hydrophobic spray, not sure how well it works on full leather boot. I use nano something on my shoes and my boots are rubber.

That's just a modern leather boot. How is that heavy to you?

All boots have vibram soles nowadays. That's not a brand-defining feature anymore.

    My regime is:
    Pull out laces.
    Wipe down with damp rag.
Clean with saddle soap, wipe off and let dry.
Apply coating of leather oil, wait 24hrs.
Apply coating of boot grease, wait 24hrs.
Think about doing a serving grease coat but think frick it and start wearing them again.

    Seems to work for me.
