What is the absolute, cheapest, barebones way to fix a hole in drywall that doesn't involve me cutting into the wall and drilling a piece of drywall where it was, if I don't care about getting my security deposit back?

    pull out the broken piece(s)
cut piece of found wood that fits between 2 studs
screw/nail wood to studs so it lays across hole in wall
screw the broken drywall piece(s) to the wood, possibly shaving the edges so it fits well
get tube of drywall compound and fill in gaps around the piece(s), do it again after it dries and shrinks, sand, paint
    total cost about $5

You can also do this but just run a screw.through the undamaged drywall on each side of the hole into your board or plywood piece. Then do.as the other anon said. No real need to anchor it to the studs.

If you don’t care about getting the deposit back why fix the hole at all?

    search for: drywall mesh patch

alternate: stuff newspaper, shopping bags, or other material into hole.
poke the material down until it's below the outside surface of the drywall
    cover with plaster of pairs

I had some majorly fricked up holes in my apartment before and I got my deposit back easily. fill the void with something like expanding foam or even just wads of paper towels or something. Then spread spackle over it and let it dry. Sand it down and paint with matching paint. if you do it right it will be indistinguishable unless they're inspecting EXTREMELY closely which they won't.

Adding on one last thing the hardest part was getting the paint to look right. I had walls similar to the one in the OP, and I got a decent camouflaged paint look by dabbing it with a sponge to get that dotted texture.

Do the mesh patch if it’s not frickhueg. But you’re still going to have to mud and sand, so it’s not much harder to cut a piece of drywall to repair it. Any solution that won’t look moronic will require mud + sand + paint.

If you don’t care about the security deposit, leave it be.

I dont want to explain it fully but all you need is a piece of drywall and spakle:
No screws, no studs, not tape

5 min mud and scrape it in with some cardboard you were going to throw away. Find something flat to smooth it later.

It will always be funny that if you punch a mutt wall, the wall breaks instead of your hand.

I don't have anger issues, I don't rent, so that's not a problem with me.

If its in a room or place you dont care about in the door hardware aisle theres plastic round plates for 5 ish dollars that have double sticky tape on the back. They are for where doorknobs punch holes in drywall.

Quickest and cheapest if your hands were small enough, ive had good luck tho the big ones cover quite a bit. I have to fix things renters frick up.

If not, putting a heater register or access panel for plumbing are good tricks to avoid doing drywall. Its just a vent man.
