I dunno if "embarrassed" is the right word but my balaclava is kinda uncomfy, I wish I could find an all-cotton one. And it definitely sucks to have your nose and mouth covered while you bicycle, which is mainly what I use it for. That's why the pandemic was so weird for me, cuz I was already used to "masking" but only when biking in the cold.
I also wear sneaker covers to bike in the winter, they are plastic shoe covers that velcro around your shoes. It feels weird and vulnerable to put them on in city streets cuz I have to sit down on a curb typically to put them on.
I brought a Bastion Gear chest rig for myself and my normie room-mate said it looked "gay as frick".
I just strap it to the outside of my bag and won't wear it unless I'm deep in the woods where no-one else will ever see me with it on.
I am a field geologist. I spend 60 hours/week in the mountains of North BC during the season. Everyone wears chest rigs. I let a new guy borrow mine and he offered to buy it off me for double what I paid. Another guy made a DIY one out of the brain of an old backpack. Super useful, not LARPing gear. don't be afraid to wear it because of normies
>Another guy made a DIY one out of the brain of an old
for a second i thought you were going to say "out of the brain of an old bear" which would have been more based.
I made a "battle belt" with an ALICE belt and a few mag pouches that I wrapped around my midsection under my bag (above the hip strap). Essentially a chest rig but lighter and easier to get on and off.
Could get my binocs on it as well. It was very nice, but I looked like a total tard on trails so I ditched it for ye ultralite solution of less utility
You could also take the top off a backpack and fanny pack it to your midsection. Probably looks less larpy, but you guys are legit workers so you can do wtf ever
I presume it's an effective way to carry extra things, in terms of weight distribution?
Made me laugh the way he put it, but I can see from his perspective how it would look like a silly optional accessory. I wouldn't wear one because I like to look at the ground as I go.
While I'm not for bashing gear for how it looks, I genuinely had a good chuckle when I looked it up. I don't doubt that it's useful while PrepHole, but it just looks funny to me. Like a chest fannypack
The Bastion chest pack is a ripoff of the HPG kit bag. The whole point of the kit bag is to enable a person to carry a gat in an easily accessible place on the body while wearing a pack, and not freaking no-guns karens out on popular trails.
May be the gayest shit i’ve said all year but US ERDL/Chocolate Chip camo is the cringiest possible shit but Tigerstripe & those eastern commie camos are fashionable as hell. I have a jacket made out of this german flecktarn stuff & it’s my fav
>they’re just ubiquitous with fat lards at a patriots game ready to leave at halftime in their lifted punisher truck
I thought they exclusively wore mossy oak camo clothing
anons on PrepHole used to buy flecktarn parkas and then rit dye them black, but not all the way so the camo pattern still shows through if you look closely.
looks cool as frick imo.
idk about you guys but when you live in Black personland it's good to not be spotted from miles away alone in the middle of nowhere.
I go full larp with a camo net too ain't taking any chances.
Pretty much any surplus gear which is why I mostly grab it for winter/wet. Its price point and effectiveness far outweighs the dorkiness of the camo and you aren’t really gonna see anyone in those conditions that gives a shit. The only real exception to this is some british desert rain pants. Those actually look kinda cool as long as you are wearing relatively normal clothes with it
>Its price point and effectiveness
milsurp rain gear is actually really bad for the money lol. trust me i live in olympia one of the highest rainfall parts of earth where a lot of rain gear doesn't even cut it for casual city use. milsurp rain gear uses the cheapest lowest grade membranes gore tex makes. gore tex is a brand not a fabric. so if you're seeing $500 backpacking jackets also made of gore tex... different stuff... probably made of gore tex pro or gore tex shakedry.. less durable way more expensive and way higher performing. https://www.gore-tex.com/ click technologies at the top of the page to see all the shit they make.
IME those milsurp jackets'll keep you dry and breathe but they're 5-10x as heavy as a normal backpacker shell, 5-10x as bulky when packed, and they rely on membranes that do eventually wet out.
if you mean the all in one gore tex + insulated parkas, i actually like those a lot, just not as hikin' gear.
some way way way way better options:
$20 frog toggs: not dwr reliant and will never wet out no matter what. the most popular rain gear among long distance backpackers. doesn't breathe but vents. disgustingly light weight. rips and tears easily and must be babied + not for off trail.
$80 columbia outdry when it goes on sale constantly: never wets out, it breathes better than frog toggs. looks disgusting and shiny. the only company making jackets out of it can't design hoods worth a shit. the most durable rain gear that doesn't use dwr and thus can't wet out.
$50 marmot precip when its on sale every holiday: basically the same thing as the milsurp jackets just way lighter and better packing. good off trail beater jackets.
i can spend 12 hours hiking in torrential downpours in the first 2 and be dry as a bone at camp.
milsurp parkas and the last one you'd be wet. more durable and abrasion resistant but they're only good for a few hours of real rain.
this is actually good to know. however, i live in a very dry area so my hardshells dont really get used too much. the rain pant market is ass and i appreciate the 100 dollar 8 inch leather boots that can stomp through any crap with and i dont have to care about them.
hiking pants
they used to be my year around pants and basically only thing i ever wore
then the corona outdoors trend happened and for the last 3 years when i go to the grocery store 1/3 people are wearing them and every big store is full of outdoors pants of every fashionable kind
they even have a name, middle age dad mortgage adventure pants
frog toggs or outdry = if you live in a very wet area that commonly has prolonged rain
outdry or precip = if you live somewhere with mostly sporadic couple hour long rain showers
best budget recs for rain gear that exist and don't involve diy or getting something made custom.
women's bags are the same thing as men's bags if they use j straps.
the only real difference is the torso size range they sell them in and some of them using s straps for boobas instead of j straps. but a lot of women's packs use j straps and are effectively men's bags with different marketing.
>the only real difference is the torso size range they sell them in
I'm not a big guy. The issue is I've seen women using the same pack so it's more of me overthinking.
Gear can be sold or traded or gifted -
But this topic, and the mentality that made someone give enough of a shit about it, is the most singularly humilating aspect if all.
Use things for function. Fashion follows the actual prople doing things and is a hollow shell of myopic slags trying to appear like they have a single independant thought anyway.
If imitation is the sinserest form of flattery, I just hope no one overpays for it really.
>Use things for function. Fashion follows the actual prople doing things and is a hollow shell of myopic slags trying to appear like they have a single independant thought anyway.
hard agree
i had 3 different anons yesterday sperg out on gear recommendations i made because they don't "look cool"
i even had one do it with sleep gear. there's people on this board who CARE WHAT THEIR BACKPACKING PAJAMAS LOOK LIKE LMBO.
>Use things for function. Fashion follows the actual prople doing things and is a hollow shell of myopic slags trying to appear like they have a single independant thought anyway.

I don't believe either of you, Anons. I think you've just bought things you feel comfortable wearing, or have never been given anything PrepHole related as a gift that missed the mark slightly, but you still use out of sentimentality. I don't buy the line that you both are immune to human emotions. That's garbage.
It may be true that neither of you own anything that causes you embarrassment, but it's not because you have steel psyches.
I have a drake mossy oak camo jacket, and I always feel like some white trash redneck when I wear it. I don’t even hunt. It’s probably the comfiest jacket I’ve ever owned though
I have a portable toilet that I made out of a milk crate and a toilet seat that I use to do my business whenever I'm PrepHole. I wouldn't say that I'm embarrassed to have it, but some people may think it's weird.
But the closest might be me trying to explain why I carry a titanium flask to hold my lagavulin 16 to normies who think think they are gonzo special and whiskey knowledgeable for drinking wild turkey.
When I'm alone I don't care.
When I'm with others I'll leave really expensve gear at home.
I don't enjoy bragging at all so I don't bring my best stuff with others.
There is one cheap item I hate to be seen with, a military green sun hat with velcro molle all the way around.
I think I might be becoming a military surplus gay. The wool gear, at least, is way, way above spec for the price you can get them at, and I am usually buying the greens, greys, and browns in the brand name stuff.
Talk me out of it.
I got a solid dark grey wool or blend sweater that has a little pocket on the sleeve, a little pot with lid, a trangia set without pot (I just wanted the burner), pants, etc. I just keep checking goodwill every month or week depending.
On my first ever hike (2 day trip) I bought a giant knife (Not my picture but same knife) and wore it on the chest strap on my backpack the entire trip. I never even used it once and I cringe when I think about what the people I passed on the trail thought. Now I just bring my 10 dollar Mora knife and just use it to cut my sausage mostly.
Knives like that are great for bushcraft or as a survival tool of you are going somewhere truly remote where beaten trails and resupply are not common, I'm a huge knife nerd but if I'm hiking for distance I carry a light folding knife.
i have never felt embarrassment, guilt and shame, sure, but never embarrassment, i genuinely don't know what it feels like.
i know the feeling of making other people embarrassed, but not for myself.
I only use gear that I need and like, so none.
I dunno if "embarrassed" is the right word but my balaclava is kinda uncomfy, I wish I could find an all-cotton one. And it definitely sucks to have your nose and mouth covered while you bicycle, which is mainly what I use it for. camo
You should only be embarrassed about using it if you're not hunting
My tarp is woodland camo and in fairly pristine shape.
And also if you're hunting
>camo gear
>bowie knives
>military knives
>chemical firestarter
>plastic cookwear
>lime wedges in my rum
>orange pants that i bought on clearance
May be the gayest shit i’ve said all year but US ERDL/Chocolate Chip camo is the cringiest possible shit but Tigerstripe & those eastern commie camos are fashionable as hell. I have a jacket made out of this german flecktarn stuff & it’s my fav
I love fleck too but don't you dare disrespect ERDL, M81 or choc chip.
It’s not that they’re bad camos, they’re just ubiquitous with fat lards at a patriots game ready to leave at halftime in their lifted punisher truck

Literally me, I love never being spotted.
a fanny pack can't make you look like a homosexual, unless you already look like a homosexual.
> embarrassed
> outdoors
lmao have a nice day c**t
sorry you always hike alone anon, you'll make friends one of these days
I would say you'll grow out of your grade school mentality one of these days, but that seems unlikely.
The dude in your picrel gets more pussy than you. Learn to peawiener.
camo is authentic
Purple boonie hat from the women’s section of a milsurp store. Only stow it when i’m PrepHole in the deep south (or utah, can’t trust those mormons)
nobody would know this is a women's hat if you didn't say it. just looks like some novelty find. why stow it?
Hat looks fine anon, you're sweating over nothing

i'm embarrassed by a lot of my gear, i'm an ultralighter. what do ya want, my whole lighterpack list? kind of embarrassed i have one to begin with.
>what do ya want, my whole lighterpack list?
Just one example. Geeze.

Nothing.

Lol i drink wild turkey cuz its 20 dollars and i like the bite for some reason. Anyone that thinks its bad ass is megamoronic
Trekking poles for sure. I feel inferior when I hike past someone without trekking poles. I have such a small penis for using trekking poles.
ITT: nothing but female LARPers. The trail isn't a fashion show runway, stupid prostitutes.
one of my most expensive and rarest used items
