Search with the filters ".308" and "semi auto" sort by lowest to highest price.

    PTR-91 or an AR-10

      >PTR-91
      LOL WUT
      PTR-91's go for over $1000
A decent ar-10 can be had for $700, a shit ar-10 can be had for $500 even $400

G3 pattern rifles are NOWHERE near the price they were <2018, I know because I've always wanted one but they aren't worth it for the price anymore, like how an SKS isn't worth it at the $700 asking price

PTR-91 has cheap surplus support (magazines) and eats steel case happily but it's an awkward design. Rock and lock mags, a necessarily stiff charging handle way out in front. Reloads aren't as fast/intuitive as an AR platform, no bolt hold open. Not the easiest rifle to customize. And it's heavy.
Lot of fricking fun though. If you're not a b***h. Bought mine new for $999 at the height of COVID.

AR-10 makes the most logical and practical sense. But if you like guns with style or history you will have to look around. I got a cheapo century FAL on a worst of the worst hesse receiver for 800$. I was expecting issues but the mags were the only real problem, cleaned them up and it's running no problem. Deals can be found you just gotta hunt or get lucky.

PTR91 is love. PTR91 is life. Spent 2k to slap shit on a 1k rifle and there is nothing anyone can do about it.

But really, the answer is an AR10. Unless you have a chubby for the AK slap and want to LARP like it's 1988 Fulda Gap hours, the AR10 is the single cheapest, easiest, and most potentially capable modern .308 platform for the money.

But damn do I like my 91.

I wanted a Harris bipod because it's what I'm used to. Wide handguard+bipod is aesthetic AF but this is already a moronicly heavy rifle and I'm merely using it to ring steel at 500m to begin with.

    >cheapest semi-auto .30-cal
An low-end AR-10 would be your best bet, but if we're talking straight-up poverty-tier semi-autos, you're gonna wanna go full fudd
    >Remington 740/742/7400
    >Browning BAR (no, not that one)
Go to any fudd-tier gun show and walk out with one of these bad boys and 6lbs of beef jerky for <400
Spend the money you save on ammo and shitty proprietary mags
    >bonus: you can find these in .30-06 at the same price and enjoy even more deerkillin action

I've never looked into it but you really think a 308 BAR hunting rifle could be had for around $400? That'd be pretty cool to have

The browning BAR is alright I had both a 300wm and a .338 wm back in the day but stay away from rremmy 7400s.
They aren't as durable or reliable as the browning and are a giant pain to feld strip and maintain.

I had one 7400 in .260rem a long time ago but had nothing but trouble with it, bought new in 2006 beshot something like 300 factory corelokt stuff... Started to have weird ftfes, turns out it was headspace issues..
