Wearable scratching posts.

I'm stuck, either I make pants that prevent this shits sharp ass claws from piercing my skin or I deter it, what do I do? Pretty sure it's a sign of affection so I can't correct the behavior. what gives?

    trim your cat's nails

I remember when my cat started doing it--I had his tail amputated and made him an indoor cat only because of an injury. I just couldn't bare to stop him because I was wearing my thick work pants. Years later I realize the problem when he starts doing it to people visiting and they're wearing thing leggings and stuff.

My advice? Trim your cat's claws and don't be afraid to push him down if it's not appropriate at the time. My cat learned he can only do it to people wearing pants and not on skin pretty quickly.

This, just trim the claws. They get used to it after awhile.

Black person all cats should inherently be indoor only.

No, that's how Black folk who don't know how cats work raise cats. Let the frickin critters roam free.

My cats roaming outside is why they are tailless, missing eyes, and infected with FIV.

Keep your cat inside if you care about it.

there's something wrong with a cat that falls apart from being outside. cats typically do pretty well outside since it's their natural environment and all.

Cats have severely diminished life spans when they live outdoors.

It's not a sign of affection and cats will wear their way through anything. I have the chewed-up molding, around my garage door, to prove it. Build him a decent scratching post and put it near where he sleeps - he'll stop doing it.

You obviously never paid attention to how cats operate. My cat has a scratching post, and if he did the same thing he does to it to my leg, that would be a trip to the ER. I get the impression from OP that his cat comes up to him, stretches out while leaning on his leg and he gets a little bit grippy with his claws. I had a cat who would knead on my tummy and her tiny sharp claws would stick out a bit, just enough to be annoying. Unfortunately it's hard to correct as I think it stems from a very young age when they are playing with other kittens. If they get annoying, the other kittens are quick to let them know.

trimming nails wont stop the behavior, and it's not affection. your cat is just trying to stretch and figured out that your legs are perfect for the activity. plus if you pat its head while it does this, it's reaffirming the behavior is appropriate.

if it's been doing this its entire life there may be nothing you can do. it's simply too patterned behavior to correct. you'll be correcting them the rest of its lifespan.

use simple commanding language like stop or no to communicate they're being inappropriate. don't ever hit or shout at them, it won't help. you can't give them treats to reward good behavior either, they'll just start to want them all the time without understanding what a reward is.

i've read posts online suggesting you could put irritants like spices on carpet where cats tend to scratch, i wouldn't do this either, it's just mean and they won't understand.

you're going to need to make a scratching post at least as tall as your pants and place it in the same room where the cat typically does this to you. you can simply glue a piece of carpet to a 2x4 and secure it with a staple gun, but you need to screw it to a base or the wall as well because if it isn't stable/functional at all times the cat won't use it. it doesn't necessarily need to be a vertical scratcher but they do tend prefer those for stretching.

if the cat doesn't figure out how to use it, force them to use it. place the cat in front of it, pick up their forelegs, press the paw pads gently to expose the nails and while up in a stretching position, hook the nails into the scratcher. do this every time the cat tries to scratch you.

the problem is the behavior, a temp band aid is not the solution. correct the behavior.

how do you know what the cat is thinking
if i pat an object and also pat a person does that mean i think the person as the object

you literally don't. they're not smart they're not dumb, but consider they are also emotional creatures. no amount of my lifetime experience with cats gives me any insight on their thoughts. you just know they are not at a similar mental capacity as you. look for patterns and guess the thought. cats are literally driven by instinctual, environmental, observed and patterned behaviors and only the latter can you have any success at correcting. you have proof they have memory, you have proof they have motor skills, you have proof they can process logic, you have proof they can exhibit and interpret emotion. break down your communication process as simple as possible such that a lesser being than a cat could handle it and you can work with the things.

you could do all that rigamarole or you could just say that when the cat stretches against your leg and softly meows it's showing affection since it feels good

      BS.
Just smack him every time he claws. Not hard obviously, but hard enough that he stops. He'll stop trying altogether pretty soon. Issue is that he may do it to guests when youre not looking.

focus light taps on the problem: the nails. i've successfully gotten cats to stretch but not use nails that way but patterned behavior can be permanent in felines. you won't solve it that way with most cases. you accomplish nothing but animal abuse bopping your cat on the head. they don't understand what it's for as i've written already. hurting your animals deliberately means you are a huge fricking cuck pussy yourself.

my woman moved in with me with two ~10 year old cats that conditioned her to let them sleep on her fricking face and sit on her lap while she eats and beg for food
i literally just pick them up and throw them across the room and they come back and test the boundaries. they now lay below my waste and don't disturb me eating
i got a water gun and shoot them every time they beg for food, they no longer beg but wait until the reliably feeding time i've implemented
          they're not moronic

There's a huge difference between beating your cat, and forcing it to submit.

Your cat will understand loud sounds, being pushed down, and other negative reinforcement. Cats are just irritating in that they know better, but will try to see if they can get away with it.

    >Pretty sure it's a sign of affection so I can't correct the behavior.
It IS a sign of affection and no he doesnt want to hurt you.
When he does it and you feel his claws come out, cry out loud and then walk away ignoring him.
He will quickly learn that he is "hurting" you, and you are not giving him the love and attention back when he does this particular thing.

Kittens play hard until it hurts, then they cry. Thats how they learn to back off and roughouse to an acceptable level.

My cat did this shit, and he would grab my legs and play/fight them every time I got dressed for work. He eventually figured it out as I cried out in pain.

    Fancy ass cat. Yours?

When my cat would do that I’d just pick him by the scruff of his neck and move him. That way his claws come out easy and don’t tear your shit. and he learns you aren’t a scratching post.

Also kittens are horrible about this. The cutest thing my kitten everyndid. She would wait for me by the door when I got home, and would immediately jump onto my jeans. As I walked up the stairs she would scamper up me to sit on my shoulder. Like a frickng parrot. Or like I was a tree in the jungle her ancestors would have perched on. I’d keep her up there while working on the computer, and eventually it was just where she liked to hang out.

violence is literally pointless against the mental capacity of a creature like a cat. it's like telling a moron to never groan like that again. if you're at that point just re-home the animal.

cats are not tribal; they are solitary hunters, my experience they respond to actions, other cats rarely communicate with each other it is often violent outburst, with no effort to teach.
I grab the scruff of the back of the neck and push down until the animal seated i do not move other than this. e.g. the cat ends up laying on my feet

the concern is if the animal leaves the bonding circle, roughly a 3 foot radius around you. bonding circle is a rough term from an experiment about domesticating wolves, dogs will stay near or in this circle while wolves spend less time in it.
