You just don’t get it. I’m MUCH more likely to be accosted by some sudden invading foreign invaders or wild cult survivalist. I NEED to be as tactical and camouflaged as possible when I’m out in the middle of nowhere with nobody around. The chance of me wandering off the trail and getting lost is tiny compared to my chances of engaging in a shoot out with some woodland outlaws. You just don’t get it.

This. As always, thread is full of autismos overthinking things and focusing on 1% cases. Most people go shopping for whatever is in stock at some local market or "outdoors place" and pick based on price and rough sizing, then maybe a few features or what salesman pushes, then that narrows it down and you pick color which is at best 2-3 but often just one. It'd have to be TRULY offensive for anyone to order a color special or go elsewhere.

EVERY time I go through the airport they pull my bag to do extra checks. Haven’t been accused of being a soldier wannabe yet however. Which is weird because I love OD green and all my range bags, ammo bags, and rifle bags are in that color.

Just stop caring what people think, and don’t let anyone talk down to you ever because regardless of what you do, people will talk shit. I was in the infantry for 8 years, I got my unit patch on my 2dap bag that I hike with and bring to the range. I put the fricker on there because it’s been on my gear for the entirety of my adult life and it is a good way to mark my bag as mine. I get three types of people who come up to me, the first one I call the “one upper”. They’ll say something like this “oh you were in the military? I was a green beret/navy seal sniper” then they’ll try to hold you hostage while they tell some bullshit made up story about a firefight and an ambush. Then you got the guys who were in for four years, got out and are now cops, they’ll say something like “yea there’s just so much more action out here” while conveniently leaving out the fact that they were a pog ass b***h who just enlisted to suck down 100% va disability checks.
Finally you’ll get the dudes who wanna seriously b***h check you. These are usually older guys who have never served other than working a construction or trade work for the last 40 years. They’ll start off saying something similar to the first guy, but then instead of fluffing themselves up, they’ll say something like “well did you see any combat??” Which if you read between the lines they’re actually asking “well did you really serve?” Because in their minds if you didn’t freeze your dick off in Korea or get cut in half on the beaches of Normandy you ain’t a veteran. Last guy who asked me that, I responded, “no I missed the boat to Guadalcanal by about 50 years”

Veteran worship has gone full circle.

Sounds like my favourite kind of place. I live at the confluence of 4 different military camps and get dirty looks often. I served and kept all my shit in good condition, why shouldn't I still use it? Good quality rucksacks and boots are expensive

On the other side tough, having a bright colored rucksack can sometimes make it easier for you. I always dress in plain black but I take a red backpack with me or something bright to cover my head, when I go hiking alone in the mountains over treacherous off-trail paths, half hiking half climbing where you are not going to meet anybody at all.

Having some bright colors on you gives you way better chances to get spotted by a rescue team, just in case you run out of luck.

I have been a former volunteer in the local section of the mountain rescue party based in the Italian Alps, so I've come to know all this first hand. It can make a difference.

And also please, don't be that kind of city dweller butthole who gets stuck in high mountain snow wearing Chuck Taylor sneakers. We hate you for that.

I'm in the habit of wearing bright orange jacket and colors much of the year simply because I live in a state where people hunt and shoot a lot. Including me. Bright colors significantly reduce your chances of getting shot.

Yeah, this also. Then I get puzzled glances by old boomer hunters (older boomers than me I mean) who always dress up like Rambo to go shooting a bird. Not that I would feel like choosing a pack on whether mental cases will accost me on a hike, but visibility can matter. Since I too favor military style packs and earth colors bring an orange or red rain cover for the pack, alternatively a bivvy in the same colors, for that one in a lifetime actual emergency where I want to be seen. Also works when it rains.

Does anyone have a suggestion for what to read to lean how to properly setup and organize a molle-style backpack? I bought one for bike riding and hiking but I've never used one in my life before and I assume there's some sort of trick to wearing it correctly + getting the right sorts of addons n shit.

      Anonymous

Just because there is molle on it you aren't supposed to use it. Unless you can really benefit from the quick access, your gear should not be dangling on the outside of your pack where it can rattle, catch on things and/or get lost.Medic pack yes. Not a whole lot else.

Most of the weight is supposed to be on your hip so there better be a belt for that. Your shoulder straps should keep your pack reasonably tight and close; if your pack bounces you will get weary and unsteady fast. But not so tight that it hurts to wear it or the straps cut into you.

        Anonymous

Okay, I can understand that. Is it better to try and keep things from sitting loose inside of the bag itself?

          Anonymous

Depends on the pack. Many have side tightening straps that lets you adjust the volume. I'm a fan of packing food, dry clothes, and various other types of pack into small cloth or similar fabric bags so I can find things easier in the dark, and it also helps to keep stuff less loose. Also the packs have varying numbers of pockets and compartments that can help you keep order and firmness.

Molle is great. It gives you options. But just because you can now strap a small car on top of your pack, your back didn't get stronger and the pack system didn't become able to take on considerably additional weight. If half your baggage is now on the outside of the pack, something is going to tear.

I don't think I've ever seen this happen in the US, I think because everyone is afraid they'll get the response "I fought in Afghanistan you ancient butthole I'll wear whatever I want." or "my uncle gave it to me in his will when he PTSD an-herod I'm using it because it was his favorite." and then they'd be mortified for weeks because they couldn't say "thank you for your service" to someone.

Also random twelve year olds have switched Glocks nowadays and they might smoke you just for the hell of it because they misinterpreted a tiktok trend, so you're better off not interacting with most strangers in public in the first place.
