crazy how none of them ever bother to look up at the sky
do they unironically send them to the fronts without even mentioning drones?

They probably have a vague idea about what's going on in there, but it's not like they have any initiative for improving their conditions in the military or anywhere else.
They don't want to think about it. What happens, happens. They can't help it. Maybe there is a drone, maybe there isn't. It's all lies and shit. Where's the vodka?

      Anonymous

Honestly this is one thing I find it hard to blame them on.
You're cold, tired, hungry and trying to move forward. Your mind is on more immediate matters like watching your step and keeping your eye out for things on the grond. It's very easy not to spot the tiny speck far above before it's too late.
Should a squad of soldiers have a dedicated dronespotter? Yeah, probably. But trying to constantly be aware of the sky day-in, day-out while also not losing track of the things on the ground is a tall order.

        Anonymous

        >Should a squad of soldiers have a dedicated dronespotter? Yeah
This is an excellent practical application of AI. Have one man in the line wearing a drone spotter backpack powered by ai with a camera and radar coming out of the top above his head. It can fire countermeasures automatically upon detection. Not impratical considering how vicious these drones are and having one less rucksack on hand is definitely worth it if it gives them confidence they are protected from drone attacks.

Most people just don't look up, they look straight ahead.
Also remember they have helmets on, which partially obscure upwards vision. Not really surprising.

To be fair beside Middle Easterners most Humans do not have a ingrained urge to be scared of threats from the air. If we were predated upon by some sort of massive eagle in our species early years we probably would have that instinct.

It is necessary to preserve MY precious /k/ to end them which is a sacrifice I am willing to make. Given the choice between /k/ and vatnikpooserbjeets it is eminently reasonable to kill them all, hear the lamentation of their women on Onlyfans as they beg for foreign wiener, and collect ALL their delicious surp which being dead or crippled the will no longer need.

Have you actually read it? The Party in Nineteen Eighty-Four is a collapsing late-stage totalitarian regime. Successful empires keep their wars at their far frontiers and the people in their capitals happy and ignorant. In Airstrip One, a barrage of bombings and ever shrinking rations serve a constant reminder of the decaying might of Big Brother, though the record of this decay is covered up and heavily distorted it trends towards ruin. The reason the party directs such a huge amount of effort into internal surveillance, rewriting of history, and dominance of potential subversive elements is that the party has less and less ability to project its will outside Oceania's borders. But no matter how hard they try to lie, reality is catching up with them.

The war is not a perpetual one. In the crucible of a war of attrition, the great lie of Big Brother falls apart. This is why the book's sole footnote refers to Oceania's newspeak in the past tense.

Unironically most of them have never really fired a gun at a moving target and they are very stupid. Ukrainians shoot down drones constantly with small arms. Yes Russians are this stupid. To hit a meter sized target 400 Meters with a rifle is beyond Russians. I am not joking. They are this stupid.

        >Are the drones that high up?
YES. They fricking are. Count the seconds a drop takes and find a gravity calculator to determine the height. About 150 feet (50 meters) is a fairly normal low drop. Some drops are 400 to 600 feet (~130-200 meters). Nobody trains to shoot straight up into the sky at a flyspeck 100 meters or more away.

The biggest thing I think nobody is thinking about is that no rifle would be sighted to shoot a target straight in the air. Rifle sights work under the assumption that gravity is pulling the bullet down perpendicular to the barrel. Shooting straight up means gravity is pulling the bullet towards you and parallel to the barrel. You'd likely be off by several yards if you aimed dead-on. It would require your zero to be parallel with your barrel, which is absolutely useless for shooting at anything on the ground and only slightly accurate for drones.

Exactly. Ignore the propagandized people. In 30 years, they will rabble how the world was misled into a horrific meat grinder and blind nationalism is a fools errand. Never realizing that's exactly what they were. Poor kids and poor civilians on all sides. No one who it's happening to deserves it, and no one who deserves it is having it happen to them. Sad. Far from it, Russia deserves quite a lot for what they did to Germany. What they do to Ukraine, while not justified, doesn't bother me nearly as much. These days, most of the raping Russians do is to their own conscripts.

I still think its wrong to laugh at the suffering of other human beings. As a /k/ related question, trying to save this thread from /misc/ bullshit, what do you think the psychological toll is of dehumanizing your enemy? What psychological advantages does it offer? Both in the short term, and the long term.

I would say the effects differ for the civilian populace and the actual warfighter, with many warfighters ambivalent or desensitized to the dehumanizition effort, but a select few fully embracing it (I think these are the types, when given authority, who are largely responsible for most large scale warcrimes)

I think most of the dehumanization propaganda is necessary to maintain civilian support for the war effort, not to motivate men to kill one another. I think we do that well enough without additional prodding. (Again, another ironic point considering my arguably pacifist demeanor) That's my perspective as a burgervet at least.

I would be interested in how other countries view it. It doesn't have to be specific to Rus/Ukraine either imho, there's nothing special about this shitty little war compared to any number that have gone on in Europe's history really.

          >These days, most of the raping Russians do is to their own conscripts.

We've deceived ourselves into thinking that being a soldier automatically means being brave. In Russias case, it's not brave to accept your fate as cannonfodder, to die on some foreign soil for goals you don't comprehend.
Russian soldiers make a willing, conscious choice - they can either suffer themselves and prevent magnitudes worse suffering of others, or they can maybe evade suffering while enabling suffering on others.
If a Russian picks up his rifle because he's scared of comrade comissar shooting him or comrade Putin ruining his life, he's a coward. The absolute worst rat-humanoid type of coward.
And it doesn't matter if Private Ivanovich is a paragon of humanity. His presence allows Private Nurgamedov and Dmitrovich to rape and plunder, allows dear Mr. President sir to wage a war of genocide.

This has been true for most wars throughout human history. It's often not malice that creates suffering, but being scared for ones own wellbeing. As such: No pity for the invader. Nailbomb kindergartens, smear anthrax in pensioner homes, death camps for everyone, until they frick off.

You do have a point though, that this war is nothing special. Doesn't mean I can't wish the limits of human suffering on the invaders (before you even mention it, yes, same goes for Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam etc.)

            Anonymous

I guess my relationship to the archetype of "invader" is a little more muddied being an American army vet. I could be considered myself to be an invader, and I knew many guys and loved them as brothers, most of whom joined up under stupid naive notions but were quickly dissuaded of them early on in our careers. I would not wish the limits of human suffering on them, nor on myself for being part of such an enterprise.

It's also a little foolish to think you can simply just "not pick up a rifle" or just surrender all by yourself. It does not work like that in real life, and when I see people say that it strikes me as being terribly naive and, in a way, quite cruel. Because I can tell you that as a soldier, that was actually the lowest I have ever felt in terms of empowerment or self agency in my entire life. Maddeningly and depressingly so. To say that I could have just done XYZ is almost insulting. Like telling a depressed person "just feel better" Oh, of course, why didn't I think of that!

That's what I like about the generation of pacifists that emerged from WW1, because I feel that as soldiers, they could sympathize with their enemies and understood that it wasn't as simple as just saying no. But that didn't mean you didn't hate being there, or that you didn't want to go home. For example, I never hated the Taliban, I knew I would have done the same thing in their shoes. But I was young and stupid and thought I needed to have an adventure in my life. I am lucky that I did not have to pay a large price for that, but I sympathetic to others who buy that lie that all societies tell their young men.

My views on war and peace are far more universal than my stance on Russia as just one country in human history. These are much bigger questions that the Zigger question.

You shouldn't compare your dicking around in the desert to a real war, you are very much correct that you where the invader in the eyes of the taliban and tbh most civilians. calling you all veterans is a fricking stretch also. You got used and abused just like the Vietnam vets except they fought an actual war.

I would have to agree with you for the most part, that's why I said I was lucky. My youthful indescretion could have ended up way worse. But that's maybe why I don't see pvt ivan ivanovitch as just a dumb orc to suffer and die for my cummies. Because I can realize I was also stupid and trapped in a situation I hated, except mine wasn't even that bad.

This is the most moving video from this whole conflict I've seen. No joke, thanks for sharing this OP.
I couldn't help but imagine myself in those guy’s shoes.
It's a tragedy for both sides; these drones make war so much more dehumanizing and pathetic. 🙁
It's two regular guys fighting each other, that probably have more in common with each other than the politicians continuing this. Fricking brutal.
What do I know tho, I'm a leaf

      >It's two regular guys fighting each other, that probably have more in common with each other
You dumb idiot, you're b***hing about drones making war more dehumanizing and then describes a quite human situation. And that's not even getting into the fact that you killing someone you're presently seeing from close even through a screen is quite human.

Seriously, do you know the words you're using?

pans are easy to encode, zooms not so much. Source is 160 MB, half the resolution would need 40 MB, vp9 maybe 20 - 30 MB, I squeezed it into 16 and the split the result at block boundaries.

              Me stupid 1920*1080 / 1280*720 is 2.25, so 160 / 2.25 / 2 so 35+ MB would have been the proper target size.

Continue smugposting Vanya; I give it a few more months until your eventual death in another failed zigger mobik zergrush somewhere in eastern Ukraine like in OPs vid) will be posted here*~~. Better start prepping your "trad" mail order of a wife for that chechen bull (this applies for your ass too).

Now; almost 2 years into the 3-day special military operation; please post the following:

    >black sea fleet
    >functioning russian air-defence
    >Kherson (forever russian lmao)
    >Kharkiv (just a feint bro trust me)

    >uhm we actually only wanted a land bridge to Crimea; all operation goals are of completings*~~
Sure; thats why you tried zergrushing Kyiv. Can russian shills get their fricking narrrative together? You "people" are fricking schizos I swear. Also lets talk about the quality of this landbridge. The land is raped beyond repair with mines; lead and chemicals. Its a fricking activive warzone; so not much careless crossing can be done there, huh? Locals hate you (partizan activity) and no I dont care for your RT news talking points about how the local population wants you there or your zoomer fsb vlogger project of the day, vatnik. But thanks for pointing this kid out; Im sure no one is going to tell SBU spooks about him *~~)

I've worked with russians, had dinner with russians, drank with russias. Great people. They were all polite and humble and kind and smart. But all of them had left Russia behind to work in Estonia and Norway.

That's the opposite of what he described, anon. There are russians that left russia behind and then there are russians that try to create russia wherever they are.

I know that these militaries are mostly normie boomers, hence their normie boomer music and normie boomer humour in most of the war footage, but once in a while you get a unit like Azov or this, where they let one of the multimedia designers from the unit do their fricking job. Amazing.
