All sorts of mental illnesses are up, and people are less satisfied even those who lived in the haydays of 20ths century before the shitty economy of the late 20th up to modern days.
I've heard an argument that it is just evolution. We evolved for primitive hunter/agri living, and we're not built for modern society.
This will lead to a slow evolution of us being made for modern society.
I think we are developing way faster than evolution, and expect some collapse or stagnation, whether slow or fast, for evolution to catch up.
It will be unconscious, obviously, and just the result of human interactions.

Its wild to think people used to have the memory power to pass down the odyssey or biblical oral traditions etc by word of mouth and now were talking about attentions spans measured in seconds.
I spent time in a mental ward and had nothing but a bible and paradise lost. I could memorize about 30 lines a day. And even now I can recite most of the first book of Paradise Lost off the top of my head. It's not hard to memorize texts if they're in verse, and committing yourself to memorizing a work makes you appreciate poetic structure and understand one of its purposes. It would've taken twice as long if it was prose, easily.
If I was given a year or so I think I could have all of paradise lost comfortably memorized. You could probably get yourself to 50 lines daily with studious memnomics.
My attention span is atrocious and zoom zoom tier as well. So like it's not as hard as people think or a skill unique to the ancients.
If I recall correctly, the oral traditions did cheat a bit with generic battles being memorized that only need names to be swapped out. Seem to recall reading one story of some Balkans oral traditions that was able to make up an epic using a journalist's name using a bunch of those generic scenes.
Along with the dominance of a hedonistic culture, we are even more screwed.

True, the opportunity is greater now than ever. But certain aspects of life have certainly degraded as well. Take for instance the mystery that once was with the age of exploration, or the Victorian gentleman looking at a dog-eared map of Africa - the most of it uncharted and unknown. We have conquered much and moved forward but at the same time it means we can never experience certain somethings as well. To be at the cusp of great revolution or insight. Nowadays in science you have to be completely autistically driven and be of great intelligence to make any meaningful push forward and taste that excitement of intellectual discovery to name but one example.

What I don't understand about Ted is what on earth did he hope to accomplish by bombing those people he bombed? No-one knew is agenda so none could conform to it, and none could predict what would trigger an attack, so none knew what behaviour to change.
A bizarre circumstance indeed, to attack like he did and then expect his thesis to be taken seriously. If he had instead simply used his big-brain to push for and publish his works instead of exploding people surely his ideas would have been taken a lot more seriously?
IIRC he bombed people working at university's working on (at the time) cutting edge AI type research. He was basically targeting people who would make computers more integral in our daily lives.

He wrote his thesis, knew how to communicate with academics. His self-exile was just that - self imposed, seemingly so he could carry out his bizarre bombing campaign which did much more to harm the emergent green movement.
He could very easily have been the RMS of the green movement.

In pre-industrial society, child mortality is at 40% and another 50% of the population don't reproduce because of other reasons (celibacy, inability to find partner, homicide, suicide, death in war, death due to disease, miscarriage and others). Effectively, only the genes of the fittest 10% survived. These were truly Darwinian conditions.
With industrial-level agriculture and medicine child mortality dropped to 1% and suddenly almost the entire population could successfully reproduce if it wanted to, even the "spiteful mutants".
What this means is that you have a bunch of mentally ill people that would have otherwise never survived constituting the majority of society. High mutational load of the body entails high mutational load of the mind, because the brain makes up roughly 84% of the human (autosomal) genome. This is why we have a rapid explosion in depression, ASD, schizophrenia, narcissism etc. and wacky political extremism.
The effect worsens because these mentally ill people reinforce their grip on society via environmental effects. For example, being in contact with depressed people can cause depression.
All in all, this is why industrial society sucks so much. Though no worry, we've been through this before. The industrial revolution is just another mistake piled on the agricultural revolution.
We are literally the physically deformed and mentally ill versions of our hunter-gatherer ancestors.
The only right path is to learn survival skills and become a future primitive in the brave new world of VR and onions kibble that is coming.
It happened too quickly for society to adapt to it so we are suffering some shock from it but it's an evolution in one of the most humane things that exist, that is to control the environment and adapt it to our needs.
