did they do this same shit in the books?

tl:dr the particular group of Savages the series concerns are essentially a bunch of rich and famous people stuffed into a starship that fricked off into the void for a few millennia. Their society advanced based on scientific progress with no moral restraints and they all eventually end up as brains-in-jars (to preserve calories) that are kept in a VR reality when they're not piloting advanced combat bodies (the ones shown essentially have them permanently as kids in the 80s hanging out around an arcade). When they enter combat, the interface is an ultra-gamified setup where they're given their objectives like it's in a videogame. Reinforcements are treated like killstreak rewards and good performance unlocks prizes (for example a free night with a certain virtual escort, with different tiers based on performance), complete with loot box-style fanfare when they're the one that completes the mission objective.
They see it as a game or competition, but from the regular non-Savage perspective, it's a bunch of hopped up techno-freaks brutally slaughtering their way through your buddies at breakneck speed so that the civilian populace can be kidnapped be experimented on and/or melted into nutrient goo.
Until the regular humans built an ultra-elite military force to deal with them, the only way to effectively stop a Savage invasion was to sacrifice the planet they land on by setting off a kind of nuke that basically ignites the entire atmosphere.

It's been a hot minute since I read the series, but that should be the basic gist.

Interesting fact about his death, it wasn't until fairly recently the myth about his death was solved. It was deduced that the projectile that killed him was a steel projectile which at time was only fired as grapeshot from a cannon. Muskets at the time used lead projectiles and the X-rays showed no signs of lead residue in his skull. You can read about it here: https://academic.oup.com/pnasnexus/article/1/5/pgac234/6758520

they were never realistically gonna conquer russia, just maybe make them sign a humiliating treaty if things went better for them
Napoleon never explicitly tried to plant one of his cronies on the Russian throne but you wouldn't put it past him, meanwhile Hitler quite obviously was trying to conquer all of European Russia at least.

Oh the writing was on the wall, marching to Moscow at all was a mistake
Although really the political climate of the early 18th century hampering potential support from allies is what truly cost the Swedish cause
