Even in chinese doctrine, they're used for wide area denial, not precision strikes against a moving target.

The idea being you launch 20-50 all in a small couple dozen kilometer wide area, the idea isn't that it WILL hit your carrier, the idea is that it's moving so fast that if it WERE to hit your carrier, you couldn't do anything about it, so to avoid even the 1% possibility of that happening, you'll just stay the frick out of that area of the ocean instead.

Probably, but the USN will still avoid areas where those weapons are going to be deployed.

Even if it's a sub 1% chance of a hit, the value of a carrier is simply too high. $15B+ in assets and ~4500-6000+ American lives. It's not something the navy is going to risk, even if the odds of one of those hypersonic missiles hitting the carrier is tiny.

It's not. They have radar for terminal acquisition after INS puts them into the sensor basket which is larger than the maximum area a carrier can random-walk in the time since launch.

      >Last of a class nobody gives a frick about
People gave a lot of shit about the LCS classes. Because they were failures. FFG(X) might not be, but it is operationally limited in range, so you gotta have it based somewhere that could go hot for it to have any impact as it won't get there very quickly.

        Anonymous

        >but it is operationally limited in range
LCS ships are limited to 6500-8000km range depending on which class and it's specific loadout.
        FFG(X) is 11,000km range
Burke DDGs are limited to a range of 8100km

So in what world is the FFG(X) operationally limited?

          Anonymous

Because the FFG(X) is literally just a Burke cut in half. Operationally limited =! Just range.

          Are you moronic?

No. But go and speak to people who work in the industry and they will tell you how it's a weird half-way thing that is ultimately limited to local water patrols. The fact it can last a month at a time at sea makes it infinitely better than the LCS, but it is rather limited in other operational capacity.

Basically everyone i've spoken to about it seems to be singing it praises from the rafters.

Based on an existing design so most of the ground work is already done, uses existing off the shelf weapons/sensors/etc already in existing USN usage.

It's like the best parts of the burke with a smaller footprint and 1/2 the price tag.

          >So in what world is the FFG(X) operationally limited?

I think he meant it does not have the large missile magazine and high end radars of a Burke or Tico, so they are really only frigates, not pocket Burkes that can be sent on DDG missions. FFG(X) represents the american MIC giving up ship design since it is an euro design.

            Anonymous

The Constellations have better radars than Ticos and any currently operational Burke. They're getting mini SPY-6s which are essentially just smaller versions of the radars going on the Flight III Burkes. As GAN AESA radars even the cut down version is a dramatic upgrade over the SPY-1Ds that the current Burkes and Ticos use. You could stick SM-3s on a frigate and do BMD with them if you really wanted.

Imagine being lost at sea with provisions finally out. In your raft you see that thing in the horizon moving to your direction, not knowing what the hell that thing is.

                Anonymous

There were proposals for a BMD focused San Antonio variant at one point. The original concept art they showed had a radar that would probably have been significantly more than 69 RMAs.
69 RMAs isn't actually all that absurd in the grand scheme of things. DDG(X) is looking at using 57, and that's for a pretty standard ship.

            Anonymous

in reality, in a CSG it means you can task your frigates for local point air defence, and leave your burke DDG for primarily BMD, ASAT, and maybe longer-range air defence roles.

So your burkes can have less ESSMs and more SM-3/6

all of the money that needed to spent upgrading US shipyards was spent upgrading south korean and japanese and then eventually chinese shipyards instead so that your elites could take advantage of the lower wages in those countries.

as a result the US shipyards suffocated under the weight of their old and inadequate infrastructure until they finally, mercifully, died.

the people who knew how to build ships all left or died and no new ones were trained because why train shipbuilders in a country that doesn't build ships?

and so now the US is trying build ships in old, inadequate yards run by incompetent people, and it's failing.

there is no way to have a strong military industry without a strong civilian domestic industry because the people you bring into the army need to come from somewhere, and the things that build military equipment need side-gigs (main gigs, really) to make money at when they're not doing army work.

and it's not like the individual people are incompetent. all of the top naval designers and tech and everything are all right here on shore. the problem is that these brilliant plans run into problems: the yard can't handle X equipment, we can't hire enough of Y worker, and then compromises need to be made, and everyone says "if you don't spend more money on it to actually fix this problem you're going to end up with dogshit", and the money is never spent because it's not about cutting a cheque and accepting a delay it's about literally creating an entire industry out of whole cloth over decades, and so at the end you get dogshit. and you tweak the dogshit for ten, twenty, thirty years until it's the most finely polished turd in the world, and it's true that the west's mature designs ARE better, but they come late and in small numbers because we pay out the ass to make bad solutions work so that we don't have to pay out the ass to subsidise an uncompetitive industry.

US ship builders? which ones? the tiny shit ones that are only kept afloat by subsidies because they're uncompetitive.

              OH. RIGHT.

              Anonymous

We don't buy directly from China, but we do pay far more than we should be and our ships take far longer to complete because basically every ship we build is a one-off work of art. China's shipyards use modern construction practices that enable true mass production of ships. They heavily subsidize their yards to make building cheaper, so they get plenty of commercial orders to keep their workers employed and sharp. The same happens with their navy ships. The US shipyards by comparison are in famine mode and barely get enough orders from the navy and government (Jones Act orders) to survive. I'd also argue it's a Bad Thing for us to be relying primarily on foreign ships and shipping companies when our wealth as a nation depends on overseas trade.

The other problem the US has is that we try to stuff far too much future weapon vaporware into our designs, and when those projects encounter issues or have to be completely redesigned, or worse scrapped, it fricks with the hull procurement as well. The iterative improvement philosophy on designs that we practiced up until the '90s is just gone. Instead we built the Zumwalts for railguns that never worked out, we built the Ford for EMALS when EMALS was still being developed and subject to change, we built the LCS for "modular mission modules" that didn't exist and then feature-creeped the hell out of it because everybody wanted it to be a Burke. The Burkes are basically the last thing we've done that have been incremental improvement on existing designs without trying to cram in experimental shit that hasn't been finalized for actual production.

FWIW I think the LCS could still be a decent vessel for officers getting their first command, it can run FONOPs and save the wear on the Burkes, and it can do mine warfare . All of that is useful and has real value to the USN, and I think it's a mistake to be retiring them so quickly when we need hulls as badly as we do, and the FFX project has barely even started.

In his defense, they were considering putting railguns on the Zumis at one point, but that was after the AGS and they weren't "designed for railguns." It seems more like he just got his chronology mixed up than he thought the AGS itself was a railgun.

Correct and my apologies, though I that doesn't refute the point that for the past 3 decades the navy was trying to build ships without the weapons intended for those ships being finalized (VGAS, then AGS in the Zumwalt's case), causing delays and cost overruns.

Then we offshored our shipyards, because Japanese will work better for less.
Urban real estate developers looked at shipyards and saw “waterfront shot ox condos” and bought them up.
Then we let the government issue endless waivers protecting our domestic trades to foreign flag companies.
Lastly, schools started looking at Blue Collar jobs as work for Losers, so nobody gets basic training in the trades anymore.

      Now we’re fricked.

The US blue water privately owned merchant fleet is less than 90 ships.

You're running out of wypipo. Only 40% of americans are of european heritage. Go and take a look at Brasil, thats your future in ten years. If there is any consolation, guns are necessary survival tools in Brasil, judging by all the gore videos of pardos and macacos getting magdumped.

So, still like 140 million people? Can you point to a single other country with more 'european stock' than the USA?

Steelworkers stopped making steel and went all in on politics. The “good” steel isn’t what they use for ships, which is what the steel mills still in business make.
      >what’s good steel anon
The shiny shit. There’s no need for shiny steel on a boat.

There is not just one class of LCS there are two and both are gimped by the insane speed requirement which leads to excessive weight savings which leads to the ship and onboard equipment simply breaking down because of structural deficiences.

Or it's also actual informed Americans discussing real issues affecting our ability to fight a naval war against China. Anyone dismissing China out of hand is stuck in the '80s. Technologically we're still ahead, but it's a much narrower lead than it used to be and unlike us, China has the strategic depth necessary to outlast in a war of attrition. More ships, more shipyards, and faster construction times. If you want to fix a problem, first you have to admit it exists. Then you can identify the causes and start coming up with solutions.

Technologically America is ahead in submarines but behind in DDGs and long range missiles. Seriously behind in long range missiles.
