    So it's going to be
    >The russians take a few buildings in the middle bit of the town after losing an absurd amount of men and equipment
    >They'll spend the next several months going back and forth over the buildings, taking far too many casualties
    >If they do manage to push the ukrainians out of the town they'll be left with...a ruined town with no real immediate value
    again?

I really don't understand this, it's like every time russia runs into a difficult, well-defended town their hindbrain kicks in and they all go "blyat we gotta take it" even if there's just no point in it.

With Bakhmut, had they actually managed to take it early on into the battle it would've majorly threatened other parts of the front, but they still kept it up after the opportunity had passed. I don't see any other way to call this behavior besides like "Bakhmut Syndrome".

Monke needs his "big" 2024 win and a suburb of Donetsk is a "worthy" prize

        Anonymous

I mean i don't even think it's that, they tried to gloat about "Taking bakhmut" and then shut up about it after a few weeks. It might just be desperation to try and accomplish anything but my best guess is that the army is being run without a head so to speak.

        >Monke doesn't actually understand the situation, so doesn't establish a strategy
        >The generals have a better view, but since monke doesn't understand, they follow his orders, and they don't establish a strategy
        >The frontline officers are more or less being left to run the show on their own, and since they have no clue what the actual strategy is, that defaults to "Let's attack this target"
        >Nobody knows what the next step is besides "Attack" and "resupply/reinforce"

'General Armageddon' might have genuinely been russia's best bet, since he actually seemed to be trying to establish a strategy, even if it was a shit one.

With Worms Armageddon gone Gerasimov was put in charge and he has to have some overarching strategy since both the 2022/2023 and now 2023/2024 winters featured disastrous Russian offensives into fortified positions (Vuhledar, Avdiivka, not counting Bakhmut since that started before he was in charge)
Obviously the end goal is seizing Donbas, but what purpose do these attacks serve? Draining Ukrainian resources to weaken their next offensive? Keep initiative on Russian side? Is he convinced that overcoming the main strongpoint in an area will trigger a general retreat or collapse? I don't know, but there is some sort of strategy in place since there is a pattern to these actions

            >Is he convinced that overcoming the main strongpoint in an area will trigger a general retreat or collapse?
Wasn't that the general idea behind Bakhmut, but due to taking very, very long time it became pointless because ukies simply fortified positions behind it during the fighting?

That was what the shills were saying, but I think Surovikin was a bit more realistic than that. He went on the defensive everywhere and only kept Bakhmut, a mainly infantry battle, going
It was a crude but ultimately way better way to drain Ukraine's resources using Wagner + Priggy was seemingly good friends with Surovikin and probably convinced him to let him have his win at Bakhmut

            Putin's grand-strategy is to:

            1. Take all of Donetsk
            2. Exhaust Ukraine so they plead for mercy.
            3. Sue for a ceasefire once they have done the two above goals.

He thinks Ukraine will gladly rush to a ceasefire.

not him but i believe that Monke believes he needs this win ASAP. the russian presidential election, while an obvious sham, still matters to him somewhat, and is only a month and a half away. not that Monke can lose it, but to avoid potential civil unrest from him winning it he needs good enough reasons for him to logically win, even if it is taking a single town after two years of fighting for it. russian media can spin that story to the moon and back, and losing a shitload of mobiks and equipment is a lot better to him than what he truly fears, whether that be balkanization of russia or getting Gaddafi'd.

Russia got a lot of money in the first year of the war by still selling gas at a high price to Europe and selling oil at a very high price to the world. Now these things aren't there anymore and the people will see economic suffering this year. On top of this Putin will need to do a second mobilization wave to rotate many soldiers out of Ukraine. He needs there to be no doubt that people support him in the elections.

is it gonna be harder since Ukraine is softer due to shitheads in congress blocking the aid package? that's really all i feel concerned about, pretty optimistic they'll do fine with or without the aid at this point

Yes and no. Europe is starting to pick up some of the slack on getting the ukies weaponry, but they're going to have to rely on their own stuff a bit more. Basically the entire ukrainian military leadership, even those in disagreement about other parts of strategy, are saying:
        >"We need to start doing more with less, so we need to start going all in on cheap weapons that perform beyond their price point"
Which is why ukraine wants to make a million FPV drones this year. Drones, mines, and artillery as the ukrainians can provide it are going to make it very very ugly for the russians to grind them out of avdiivka. "Easier" will be mostly academic for the thousands of casualties it's going to take.

I don't think it's quite correct to think of Ukraine as "softer" due to reduced aid, but definitely they're going to be getting more creative and more invested in domestic solutions.

It's not 100% final yet but that looks like $60 billion on top of the $54bn (50bn euros) that the EU passed plus the $3 billion that the UK is sending. That's a lot of funding overall when you consider the NHS for the whole of the UK runs on a budget of 164.9 billion quid or $208.02bn.

The Dems should add some "frick Iran" provisions to the package (alongside aid to Israel and Ukraine), and negotiate it as a lump item, so it can't get picked apart (though I'm not sure how easy that would be). And trusting the Americans we see now that aid to ukrane is not favorable to trump hence why the House dosent want to pass it. What's to say when shit atcualy kicks off in NATO country that any politician will want to send troops or material I mean I'd dosent affect them directly

Putin is unironically the only person in Russia willing to put up with the corrupt oligarchic nightmare that is russia (I have to admire monke for making his system kinda work, most other world leaders would have Control + A + Deleted the whole government and tried something new). The next guy in charge is gonna have to deal with it and will probably blame (in typical Russian fashion) the evil hato west for fricking up his country and shieet we dindu noffin dey impose sanctions on us for no reason shiieeet, russians have a habit of doing this btw.

Or he might just blame it on Putin and try to normalize relations with the West again. I'd think that at this point everybody in the Russian elite circles is on board with this war just because nobody wants to risk ending up like Prigo. Once Putin is out of the picture, there will be hell of a lot more important stuff going on in Russia than in Ukraine anyway, and the next leader can easily blame Putin for shitting the bed for everybody.

absolutely not. Monke represents the KGB clan that is in control of the Kremlin. His successor is already established and is directly connected to patrushev who himself is the godfather of the red glowie cland and well known hardline anti-westerner

which is less than 150 people at this point, most of who are not much younger than monkie, and their children (and grandchildren) have spent the last 30 years living in the EU/USA. I don't think you understand how "expired" Russia is in terms of leadership.

Appeasement with the west will happen after monkie death simply because there are so few people who care AND have the loyalty Putin has cultivated.
The alternative is a dysfunctional warlord-state (worse than now) where Ukrainians drones destroy the only economic infrastructure that matters.

Until Ukraine builds the capacity to have air superiority in the air space and then does what competent militaries do and encircles the urban area instead of trying to take it with years-long meat waves.
This is what Russia *theoretically* should have been able to do on day 1 with its claimed military equipment; but apparently can't due to training or doctrinal deficiencies. So here's Avdeevka, a Frontline settlement for 10 years, just 20 miles out from the courthouse of the Donetsk Meme Republic - and apparently a major breakthrough in the 3rd year of Russian invasion of Ukraine and a centerpiece of Vladimir Putin's bid for "reelection".

if there is a political outcome and the Russian military leaves on its own accord, at some level it would have done itself proud and maintained its fearsome reputation, no matter how fricked up their equipment are and how bad their officers, the normal Russian soldier still wars and still attacks. I assume they mean dropping tank mines in areas where vehicles are expected, but I do wonder if you could modify a tank mine to detonate when dropped. That would be one hell of a big boom to drop via drone on unsuspecting mobiks or vehicles.

Although I guess maybe tank mines wouldn't be effective like that? Are they shaped charges and only really effective at destroying vehicles that are directly above them and dropping one "point first" would just dig a narrow deep hole in whatever it lands on? I suspect if you could just drop a mine and gib a group of soldiers we'd already have video of it happening.

Russia doesn't need to on the offensive anymore, all the main supply routes have been captured and the only thing left is a designated killing field that is being monitored by drones and arty 24/7

i wouldn't even bother arguing with the moron, he can't understand the difference between doing max speed runs over fields in a humvee to resupply the troops already present and sending masses of attacking troops over fields on foot. this is going to be another bakhmut, solid ukrainian losses, maybe the loss of the town (through it being completely destroyed), 3-4x russian losses.

Russia doesn't have a clear strategy option that can decapitate the enemy. They can't cross the Dnieper and can't do amphibious landings in Odessa due to BSF being rekt. They can't push from north/Belarus due to it being heavily mined and even more urban, with any troop movements there being easily spotted. So this means ramming your head with WW1 losses against the enemy from the east where the Ukies can just retreat to the next "city" IF they were to lose (big if there).

Ukraine's strategy is way more simple. Taking Tokmak and blowing up Kerch bridgd will effectively cut the Russian forces in two and force them to retreat. This is something even Russians can figure out hence why they send everything and the kitchen sink in there. Gonna be an interesting year.

You can do it big boy shill, just google Kherson map and take a good look at it, i am sure you are smart enough to figure it out.

And by the way it took months and 30k+ casualties for Ukrainians to force a pporly supplied russian salient to retreat and they left 25k of the best Russian troops just slip between their fingers because they lacked the initiative or manpower to press forward.

      >and equipment issues (no US military aid)
      No one tell him

Fact: EU aid is only to finance the government, it's not military aid except for military wages.
Fact: EU stockpiles, especially of older Soviet studf, are low. They simply cannot provide the same level of military aid as the US did.
Fact: US aid is still blocked, some morons here think because it passed the Senate that ammo is being sent to Ukraine as we speak, but it has to pass the house still. And Republicans there already stated they will not support the bill.
Fact: Ukraine is running on fumes, expecting arms deliveries soon. Without US aid, in a couple of months they will simply not have the means to defend in some places. Partly this is related to Zelensky being deaf for his commanders and ordering to defend every centimeter instead of using strategic depth. Also the reason he's firing Zaluzhny, strategically a bad move.
Fact: Ukraine is also having manpower issue, and Zelensky is refusing to mobilize the required men.

Technically they don't need to force conscript meat for the grinder just yet, the meat is lining up for service thanks to the amount of money they promise, more than they'd make in their entire lives normally. Marshoigian reform, essentially. The level of motivation of such troops will be questionable, especially after they see entire companies get droned or their base himars'd/glsdb'd. Hopefully, we'll see lots of mutinies since barrier troops won't be able to sodomize that amount of mobiks, logistically speaking.

Yeah, you only lost about 1k vehicles, used several hundred thousand shells that you can't replenish in sufficient numbers, and lost several divisions' worth of troops just to capture a pile of rubble. Oh, and the best part? You still haven't captured it.
