Ukraine took back more territory in last couple of months than it lost. Ukraine gives up territory with fights and when Russians overextend Ukrainians take it back. There is no reason to believe that Russia will stop running away from territories they captured.

Funny thing is the 4th SS was basically part of Nazi Germany's equivalent to the Rosgvardiya. Cops pressed into what is essentially military service, while still legally remaining police officers instead of members of the regular army. The difference is that the 4th SS actually acquitted itself reasonably well on the Eastern Front (although it performed poorly in Greece) whereas the Rosgvardiya casually drove into downtown Kiev with a convoy of T(N)igrs and got massacred.

I still remember the Kiev frontline rout, nobody was expecting that, we were hearing about a reportedly massive 50km long Russian convoy heading towards Kiev and then suddenly in few days Russians ran away and the entire front collapsed. This is something I expect will happen with Kherson, once Russians will see it impossible to hold the line or when Ukies will manage to make a large breakthrough the entire front will collapse and Russians will retreat in few days with their shills claiming "muh faint" or "sign of good will" once again.

russians could never use it as a launching pad or supporting point for landing in odessa because they were simply not capable of conducting said landing without catastrophic failure, and ukrainians proved to be able to defend their coastline even without the island - and putting troops or equipment on the island is just too much of a risk for them without much real benefit

Controlling the island helps prevent any invasion of Odessa. Which means Russia would have to get it back. But it's main ability is to control ships going in and out of the area in general AND eventual post-war EEZ's.
