Two Of The Fastest U.S. Sealift Ships Trapped By Baltimore Bridge Collapse

>Two of the most capable military cargo ships in U.S. inventory are among the vessels now stuck in Baltimore following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge yesterday. The two members of the Algol class, which are also some of the fastest cargo vessels of their general size anywhere in the world, and two other reserve sealift ships were in port in Baltimore when the incident occurred. Readers can first get up to speed on what happened to the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which was struck by the container ship MV Dali, with The War Zone's initial reporting on the incident here.

Seems like that is a solution not a problem. Those two ships are more than capable of pulling one of the bridge sections out of the way.

Yeah nah cities are universally awful places, crawling with all the filth of humanity in a sickening mix of avarice, sedition, and vice. No matter the city. The press of people everywhere, each one so desensitized to the endless amount of people that they're ironically more isolated than ever, only they're breathing in fumes and disease.

Frick cities, humans were never meant to congregate in groups above a thousand.

Wait till your recent imports have teenage children. Then the crime waves cause other citizens to move away from the causes (white flight) and the taxes of the area don't pay for even half the services or police which are subsidized by neighboring areas. Then they cry racist when the police try to fix anything in the neighborhood that doesn't even generate enough taxes to pay for the police that are always patroling it. And then your systemic racism is at fault and other tax dollars need to be spent on endless programs to help that area at the expense of helping other areas less, including the better behaved but equaly poor white ones.

Cities require accommodating other people which is a burden.Cities make land ownership unaffordable. More acreage and fewer neighbors is always desirable which is why those who canafford a country villa etc tend to do so.

Cities require mingling which is bad enough, but are infested with poors. Why would anyone with a choice and not wealthy want to live in a city?

I don’t know but the International Maritime Pilots’ Association said the pilot did everything that could be done so…

The investigation is ongoing. So far it looks like the ship did almost everything possible once it experienced a power malfunction. There are still questions as to how that malfunction happened, so maybe issues prior to that. From the moment of power malfunction to impact is almost exactly five minutes, and a lot was done in those five minutes. Bridge control was informed and the bridge was closed, which was huge. Emergency vehicles & response were already on the way prior to impact. The ship managed to restart its engines in under five minutes (in fact, about three) which is pretty amazing. The maintenance record and traffic control/navigation are being examined (there's a black box recorder for ships, which has now been recovered and is being examined).

Once the ship lost power and was clearly headed at the bridge, it's possible they didn't sound emergency sirens/horns/etc. Don't know for certain if they did or didn't, or what their obligations to do so might be. That's possibly the only action that might have given the workers on the bridge a chance in the time frame involved. Even then, they would have had like 2 or 3 minutes to evacuate the bridge completely. Real slim window there.

So, I don't have Twitter or use PrepHole for anything more than /k/. There are actual vulnerabilities in the port by way of unaccounted computer systems, modems and antenna on ZPMC cranes used in ports all over North America. At the very least, they're using them to monitor container traffic entering and exiting the port... But when you have direct computer access to a crane and the ability to access internet through them, it is very feasible to use it for malicious activity.

            t. Longshoreman who had these things pointed out to him by maintenance guys.

I do IT infrastructure for a major Eastcoast hospital. That is absolutely not the case for health care. Relative to every other industry we are VERY secure because of how valuable of a target we are. Only fintech is more locked down than we are.

...but I have heard horror stories about "industrial" IT [mal]practices.

These ships are all over the map when it comes to crew and equipment quality. I was in a ship yesterday where the ship office was running old as frick tube monitors from the early 2000s. Some are real high end and good to go. I've never been on the Dali, but she has been to our port, can't tell you anything about that ship at all... But a presumption that every ship in the Fleet is an IT fortress when they have their crews walking around in torn up jackets and threadbare overalls on most vessels is a stretch. Maybe Maersk, CMA-CGM and the other named carriers have good protections, but I'm dubious about the majority of the fly by night operations.

This homie doesn't know about harbour pilots, everybody point and laugh

            Anonymous

The harbor pilot doesn't take control of the ship, they provide guidance to the captain.

They also aren't responsible for the condition of the ship's equipment, which is what failed and sent it into the bridge in the first place. Nine months ago the ship was fined by port inspectors in Chile for "deficiencies with its propulsion and auxiliary machinery." The crew didn't maintain the ship for shit and that's why it failed. East asian flags run shit ships with near-slave crews.

            [...]

Even then, they would have had like 2 or 3 minutes to evacuate the bridge completely. Real slim window there.

See above. The ship was recently cited for being a badly maintained piece of shit.

Aaaaand it turns out this same ship hit a quay in Antwerp in 2016. So basically subhumans are running the ship. Power just shouldn’t conk out randomly it’s going to come out that there’s a shady maintenance record.

Back then the ship had different owners, flag, and crew. Aside from it being the physically same ship, you can't lay that on the current situation.

Here's my schizo theory on what happened.

    >MV Dali berthed at the port.
    >ZPMC manufactured dock gantry cranes have "unaccounted for communications devices" delivered with them... Modems and antenna that maintenance guys at the port do not know the purpose of. This is real, not even made up.
    >Naturally, the crew want to check up on their social media when they get into port.
    >Check and see if there's an open wifi network instead of waiting for the Flying Angels or Lighthouse Seafarers to hook them up with their password.
    >Weird unaccounted for network is obviously the provider of the open wifi.
    >Some dude in Shanghai or something is waiting for it to happen, gets a notification... Gains access to the ship's computers.
    >Finds a way to frick the Dali's electrical system.
    >Dudes in Shanghai access the weather network and ship tracker, or just has access to the Dali's own GPS and wind readings... Cuts power at a good moment, when a 13 knot crosswind is gusting.
    >MV Dali strikes the bridge.
    >Everyone is shocked, especially the buttholes in Shanghai.

There have been a lot of cyber attacks ongoing for months. The vulnerabilities in these cranes have been an open secret for years. I'm a longshoreman, not in Baltimore, and I've known about all the weird superfluous shit up in the e-house server room. US congress commissioned a report and "discovered" the same thing, that they'd have known if they just talked to us. You can actually see the cranes in Pic related in the background of the collision video. I'm not saying this is what happened, but it's too feasible to be ignored anymore. They need to tear those cranes apart ASAP and get all the Spyware and superfluous modems and antenna out of those things.

When they're at sea for days and weeks at a time, they don't have internet or phone access. These guys will do six and eight months rotations, some of the officers are out there for a year. Of course the first thing they're looking for is internet access to get in touch with their friends and family. I work on these ships every day and at least once per month I have a crewman ask me what the wifi password is for the dock. I'm the first aid man, on the ship in my room for eight hour stints. I see what these guys do, I hang out with them, it's my job. Pic related.

Is it what happened in Baltimore? No fricking clue, but it's feasible and scary as frick.

This. Right now there's an intense investigation trying to collect as much perishable evidence as possible. That's the highest priority. If there was an emergency that required the U.S. Navy to get its ships out to see, they could clear enough of a section in a couple of hours to get whatever important ships out that were necessary. A few days or a couple weeks right now isn't as important as a very, very thorough investigation and recovery efforts.

The word Black person used to be in the dictionary before the 1970's. It literally meant someone/something you prefer not to be around. Technically, anything can be a Black person. To me, cats are Black folk. So are mosquitos & fat chicks for that matter. Don't know why blacks took it so personally. They made the term 'Black person' all about themselves. They are discriminating against others by thinking Black person only applies to them. It's not fair & they should apologize to society & have black guilt. Bunch of dumb Black folk.

It's literally "Black," which is black in Spanish, but pronounced by southern drunk scotch-irish bastards in their mangled version of English.
I remember hearing an old phonograph somewhere on youtube of an 1800s Virginia man pronouncing it negra but sounded more like nigr(e) with the e barely inflected. Not hard to see where it came from.
