tufting gun

Hey I know tiktok shit gets reviled around here, but has anyone here tried rugmaking with a tufting gun? It looks really gratifying and you can charge a shitload for custom rugs? I want to get into it but idk if it just looks good bc of slick social media or if its actually a fun hobby.

no but I've thought of it myself. Looking at etsy I think the market is saturated, so unless you want to make a bunch of items for yourself then I don't know if it's worthwhile if you intend to compete and sell stuff online

Yeah, definitely more interested in making rugs because I have fun ideas and want to give them as gifts, tufting blew up on social media in 2020ish so right now there's lots of people doing it.

I got a tufting gun last year and made a couple rugs for myself and friends. It's more time and effort than they make it seem like. Because they're trying to sell those guns at like a 300% markup. I ordered mine on ebay from a Chinese seller for around $100, they sent me the wrong type and didn't have the right one to replace it so I israeliteed them down to $50 and rolled with it. Typical ebay shit. The yarn is cheap but you'll burn though it. You have to build a nice frame to tuft on. Consider ergonomics because you'll be there hours at a time. Mine at first had me hunched over and killed my back. Even just the hours of the gun vibrating was killing my hands. Buy some more little accessories to make life easier. You'll spend another hundred or two probably to get started. It's kind of a mindless grind once you're tufting. The size rugs I was making took around 6 hours to make, maybe more. I'd put on football games and spend all weekend on them. They came out nice, people really liked them. I can now understand why people charge 300+ for a damn rug

Thanks for sharing your experience, I'm definitely going aftermarket for the gun, all the tiktok shitheads shill the same $300 gun. Howd you set up your frame? I have a long narrow space in the garage and I was going to mount it high.

Yeah they're all the same Chinese guns whether they're $400 or 100. Mine is the exact same as the one in your picture except that is a cut pile gun and mine is loop pile. I just went to home depot and got a couple 2x4s and some brackets and made a square with feet on it. Then put some of those carpet tack strips around the edges. Looks almost exactly like pic related but they want over $100 for it on Amazon and it's 19"x19 and mine I think is like 39"x39 or so. And it did not cost $100.

How is the quality of the rug thread?

You use yarn like from a craft store, same stuff you'd knit a sweater out of. So the quality of the thread I'd say is.. not good. But it is colorful and soft. These rugs are meant to be decorative, if you put them in a high traffic area and wipe your feet on them they will quickly turn into a frayed mess. They're not a door mat. Some people hang them on the wall. I made one for my dog and she lays on it. It's dirty but is holding up durability-wise. Loop pile will have a higher durability and brighter color than cut pile. Cut pile you can make look very uniform and sculpt it with trimmers. They both have a different look.
