Trail carry camping carry safety set up

What do you carry for protection on BLM land and public lands while not hunting? This is my set up. Carried for years new belt because lost weight. "Losing more hiking" Hope you all are safe.

I’d probably just carry the Bowie because it’s cash, then either the repeater or 45 depending on the use case. Lots of extra weight there, shit gets tiring.

I started hiking at 402 pounds im 280 now It honestly doesnt bother me any more and the thick belt carries the weight nicely and good eye it is 45 long colt.

You don’t “get used to” carrying heavy ass packs in the military, you get early onset arthritis causing chronic back, hip, and knee pain

Or one of the guys that went All American for three years and complains about MUH KNEES even though any trade will spend more time doing more physical stuff than you ever will. Which is it.

Depends on your own physical size and fitness. I'm 6'0 190lb in moderately good shape and my comfortable max is about 40lb. My brother on the other hand who is 4 inches taller than me and 40 lbs heavier and in better shape carries around 60lbs like its nothing all day long.

I was in a vet's program with a serial killer that had just been released from a twenty four year sentence. I WILL NEVER WALK ALONE IN THE BUSH AGAIN WITHOUT A LONG GUN. Period. He prayed mostly on campers, game wardens, Indians and Mexicans. Last kid he shot was with the kids own pistol. Got caught.

In my area you also have mexicans and morons armed with Ar's while tending their marijuana crops. They would think nothing of slabbing an old white honkey ten miles on foot from the trail head. Nothing at all.

Any light weight mid caliber is fine. Lever action 30-30 might even be optimal. Same for an SKS. I carry a light sporterized mauser carbine in 7x57. Load out is twenty in strippers and a road loaded magazine full. It has a peep sight and I can engage off hand to two hundred yards with out a problem and as fast as I can work the bolt and pull the trigger.

I am also a big knife guy. Your Bowie looks fab and is a must have on the trail. If you normalize carrying real gear, you get used to the couple of extra pounds. Shit if you are pressed that bad, take water pills for a week with a low salt diet before you go out and you should loose enough weight to make up for the extra gear. Make sure you have a couple battle dressings and tourniquets. Never know.

Thanks for the info. You ever thought about getting something modern like an AR 15 or AR10, or a fal to bring into the woods?

        Anonymous

Rather save me three or four pounds in regards to the FAL or AR10. I have humped a FAL in the bush. Full LBE to match it too. I would if I was going to a high risk area where the dope growers were known to be major hostile I would. In most of the mountain areas some of the illegal grows may have 10 to 15 thousand plants. Heard plenty of stories about the riffraff associated too. AR15s are not my thing. A 300 blackout might be fun. I have a beard so I always try not to look like an arab terrorist when I'm in the field. Hard to do with an AR strapped to me.

The OP has his shit right. Why be a statistic just because you are enjoying the outdoors. Back in school one of our mentors would say "danger lurks for the loner". He stole that someplace and I would love to know where. People just don't care about others or life. If a moron kid will pop off a couple of rounds down an alley in town, what will he do in the woods where there is no accountability at all? All he will say "ay-o Tyrone, I jus popped whitey up in that canyon. He went down harrrd". Nobody will even know or give a shit. It will be called a hunting accident

Seems like you have quite the experience sir bush anon. I only think it is cool to ruck with such guns because they are banned in my country and we only ever ruck with bolt/lever actions, and shotguns. At best an an SKS. Having to ruck modern and more "capable" guns seems foreign and I wish we had the freedom to do so in my country. I hate Canada if you can't already tell, but the one thing we got is when you go out in the boonies you don't see any morons at all. I Don't know how it is in the states

Let them know I am well armed and capable. Might save their lives. In my case I have a cane and you know how people hate the handicapable. It is like I have "kill me" tattooed on my forehead.

Handguns are useless past fifty to seventy five yards. A perp at a hundred is safe and he can engage you with a .22 rimfire rifle. Alot of these Mexicans/morons and even hippie dope growers like AR pistols and braces because they are easy to conceal going to and from their farms. Even if they are putzes among guns, they are still able to engage past a hundred yards. With optics even further. We won't look at user ability.

Let's put this in perspective. I had a real leftist anti gun guy in my shop. He lived on the outskirts of Boulder. He was showing me the trail cam footage of the mountain lions on his property. The feds had just raided the neighboring property. THEY SEIZED 50,000 DOPE PLANTS. I guess arrested 18 Mexicans. This liberal mother had just come to town to buy two AR15s. He said he had no choice. Couldn't find any ammo or magazines though. That was five years ago. I hope he is alright.

I carry my rifle in a home brew "gun bearer" like Kifaru makes. Not so menacing as caring in your hand or slung in front of you. Mine isn't real fast to work because of my buckle on the shoulder strap, but better than nothing and keeps my rifle out of the arc of my right hand movement. It is attached to an internal frame SoC pack. Highly recommended.

Example of gun bearer. My pack is much much smaller and the but holder is a military dump pouch and dangles far lower than the guy in the photo. In addition it is attached to a ring on the body of the bag itself and not the belt. No so scarry to the local yocals either. I could put a congo length FAL in there and have the same general outline. Especially with the ten rounders I like. Only there, I would keep a five rounder in my pocket with soft points just in case asked by the game warden what I was up to. In most of the places I go, I'm never asked. I do have a hunting licence and my ID in the event I am. Might as well stay legal.

How do you carry your rifle with a pack on? Especially internal or no frame styles. BTW sling hooks for pack straps are absolutely useless. You spend more time fighting with the rifle than anything else. Also they make climbing or using poles/canes impossible.

Itt: paranoid schizos that don't hike more than 5miles from the trailhead.

      Anonymous

Some guys can only walk that far each day. Add four or five of those and you will have built up some distance. In Alaska for guided hunts most guides count six miles a day with pack the norm. Tough guy or not. Clients normally top their packs at thirty pounds plus long gun. Guides or porters sixty. Only problem with weight is it magnifies damage in the event of a fall. Up there a dust off to pick up a wounded hunter might be $100k.

In my count if I keep my pack/gear in the forty or fifty pound range, 10 a day is nothing. Especially flat or at gentle incline. If it is on a general decline, I will be much slower. I do walk four or five daily anyway.

The outdoors is for everyone. Go with what you got. Do what you can. Fuck everybody else.

20" AR with a pencil barrel and a 20 round mag. Alternatively I've got an 11.5 AR with a pencil barrel that I'd also have a 20 round mag in, although that one is currently loaded up with a suppressor, light, and optic so it's not so lightweight anymore. You simply cannot get lighter than an AR with a pencil barrel and 20 round mag. You get a ton of lethality in a comfy and light package, easily my go to for hiking.

I genuinely like the size of a 20" rifle length AR since it gives you alot to grab onto which make it easier to manipulate. Alot of people don't consider this I think

CCWing while camping is cancer. You don't want to walk long distances with a holster tucked into your waistline. It's not impossible but it's not comfortable at all. Besides open carrying a rifle is a big deterant. 1 man with a rifle can do alot of damage and people won't want to bite off more than can chew if they know it
