Trades for loner

What is the best trade for someone like me who is very anti-social. I am 23 and have schizoid personality disorder. Most people with this condition are asexual hermits who are unemployed and are emotionless and zombielike. Almost like they were lobotomized. Which is basically me.

plumbing or HVAC seems to be decent. Most people hide when a contractor comes and only comes out and continue their lives when they leave.

any trade will do, you'll have to interact with some people but it's not like you're going into a sales job where you have to talk to people all day every day. the core of any trade job is you with your tools performing a task. my advice is to get over it. I dislike socialization too, I'm probably slightly autistic, and used to be like you, desperate to stay the frick away from people, although I never gave myself a cringey "syndrome" diagnosis to pair with it. over time I grew accustomed to the small amount of social banter required to not be the weird guy at work. you can handle that much too, I don't care if a dumbass doctor gave you this diagnosis either. just pay attention to how men interact on the job site and eventually you can autopilot your way through. You don't have to open up or any of that shit. just be honest and learn to laugh. at the end of your shift you can go back to being alone.

Please take your meds. I mean these kindly and seriously. Nothing makes me sadder in life is people who go off their meds, and then hurt someone. Then they are forced back on their meds and have to deal with the reality that they killed their father and ate his face. Or drowned their children. It’s fricking heartbreaking for everyone.

      Be safe fren

      > never gave myself a cringey "syndrome" diagnosis to pair with it.

Get fricked, it’s a serious illness. No one pretends to have it.

Do you live under a rock? Seemingly more than half of young people these days have self proclaimed BPD, ADHD, autism, schizoid, etc. these things exist but most people claiming to have them, don't actually, and the symptoms they have are just something they can tackle with therapy and willpower.

        Please go back to l*ddit.
Schizoid personality disorder is when someone feels okay with not having any friends or relationships or whatever. Pretty much as the OP spelled out. There are no "meds" for it.
Your eyes must have glossed over the rest of OP upon reading "schizoid", so you mistook it for "schizophrenia", which is when someone "hears strange voices in their head" or holds false beliefs that have no basis in their cultural background.
Further, you mistake schizophrenia for "the madness that always goes cinematically violent". Whereas in reality, schizophrenics are very unlikely to hurt others, on or off their meds: they far more often experience homelessness, self-harm, harassment, and violence.

tl;dr : Your post is stupid and uninformed. Either lurk moar and make less stupider posts, or go to the hivemind to get your daily dose of upvotes.

Not that anon, but Jesus, in that case I bet most of us are schizoids as well. I just tend to think that humans in general are despicable, and while I do enjoy talking to them, I have yet to be proven wrong about how they all are, and have no one to talk to outside of PrepHole and a therapist.

It's complicated though, I was prescribed SSRI for my OCD, Anxiety and Depression -- and the moment I started taking it I feel happy, confident, 100% free of anxiety even in situations where I SHOULD feel anxious, and I started planning a murder that would totally make my life so much better and not feel guilty about it, and so, in the middle of browsing the shelves of Home Hardware, I realise I need to stop my SSRI because I NEED a guilty conscience to be around.

On the other hand, I had a friend with OCD AND Autism who was taking the same brand of SSRI I was prescribed, for over a decade now, and he's happy and functional and as far as I know, not a serial killer.

          Anonymous

I had kind of a similar SSRI experience, wasn't as dark as planning a murder or anything but it lowered my inhibitions WAY too much to the point where I could have gotten myself into pretty serious trouble.

          Anonymous

If it started working the moment you started taking it the effect was psychosomatic. Every SSRI needs weeks to build up an effective blood supply to start seeing efficacy; symptom improvement seen on day one is simply because you believed it would work and it gave you the willpower to enact the behavioral change you needed to do. 6-8 weeks later you might see some changes in mood regulation or energy level because at that point there is actually a difference in reuptake of neurotransmitters but now there’s a 25-40% chance you’re getting chubby and your dick doesn’t work right

All tradies are shit socially, even the ones who love it.
You drive into a skilled field you're interested in and let the finances unravel themselves. When you get good, and you atypical types will, you can go out on your own and tell people your price. Fighting through the suck is part of it. It's equally the jobs themselves as it is the people you have to work with or for.

Dealing with the people is the worst part. Hard labor is nothing compared to a boss who calls you a beta b***h and they never leave their desk and computer

As they sit in an office and chit chat in the air conditioning all day

Then since they all see the boss more and are considered friends they get the raises and promotions

Blue collar also sucks because you can work and make this dude hundreds of thousands of dollars per year then when they call and ask if you worked there … they’re like “who?”

Depends on where you live, but lawncare/arborist, pool maintenance, routine pest control.
I do all my own pest control, but I have a friend that works for a small company and he loves it. Most of the time the customers aren't even home and leave the gate unlocked and he just goes and sprays for bugs and leaves.
Again, depends on where you live. Different countries/states have different laws and certs.

Machining, there are weeks where you don’t have to talk to anyone.

Walk in, pick up a print, if someone already programmed it from years before setup and run and deliver to customer after ordering materials

If nobody has ever made it, program it, set up and cut a 1A send to customer, if customer denies or approves, either setup and run and speed up program or program chances send another sample part. Once FAI is good male quantity and file it away until they order more

Rinse repeat for the 5 machines you have.

It’s chill while shop your self, listen to music, the one time I have to talk to people is when a trucker pulls up with metal and it’s just a “what’s up, sign here alright cool, leave the truck there I’ll fork lift it off and bring it into the shop and inventory “

We have a guy that comes by every 6 months to do to the mandatory cleaning of the central heating. He asks for a glass of water then gets to work, does not respond to questions while working, and when he’s done he says “okay I’m done” and leaves. Probably takes some simple certification for working with gas lines and dealing with silicon dust but that’s it.

They work for a bureau that does the invoicing and schedules them so there’s hardly any dealing with people directly. Something like that?

You're not schizoid. You're a shy piece of shit coping by pretending people don't exist. You're too afraid of failure so you avoid interaction altogether. Read about how to suppress perfectionist behavior instead.

I run a small business and I have met many people who I think are perfect for freelance trade EXCEPT for the part where they do the "business stuff" like developing customer referrals, proposals/estimates, billing, deposits, invoicing, insurance, taxes, etc. I've tried to convince them that it's really not that difficult it's just time consuming and they practically become paralyzed with fear at the idea of it.

I've often considered a business model like 90/10 where I develop clients and keep the books and arrange the appointments for the tradesman to do the work. I'd take 10% of the net and give them the other 90%.

Specifically I am thinking about painters, landscapers, drywall, and plumbers. They all have fairly reasonable and predictable materials and tool requirements.

      isn't that called "general contractor"

That's usually all they really do. In my state the license is all about the money. The test is open book ffs. Sales, paperwork, insurance/bond. If you set it up right it could do really well. Especially if you build a big network of different specialties, other contractors and journeymen. A tile guy probably can to simple handyman type stuff, but don't take small jobs like that. You take a finders fee and handle paperwork between the worker and customer. Like Angi's but more local and not shitty.

Commercial HVAC service is a good. The customer shows you to the problem, explains it and dips most of the time. You work with other people on some calls but the bulk of your time will just be you and your machines. Supermarket refrigeration especially. Residential will not be like that, people will bother you constantly. Either way it'll be a little while before a company lets you loose to work alone.
I'm a night shift stationary engineer. I do rounds through a building alone for three hours, do maintenance with another engineer for one, and then dip and read somewhere quiet the rest of the night. More social than some other stuff but working nights lets people get away with some pretty bizarre behavior as long as it's not disruptive

Welding is ok. When you drop your lid and weld, the outside world disappears.

    t. probably schizoid, probably autist, but I refuse to go to some israelite shrink to diagnose me with all sorts of nonsense. I've learned to contain my spaghetti and behave like a normal person, to the extent that I even have a wife and children. Just stop being a weirdo and emulate how normal people speak and act. Doesn't matter if it's a charade, it gets you success.

      Anonymous

This is what I was thinking too. Welding in a fab shop where people mostly leave you alone to do your thing all day is probably the best option for somebody like OP, way better than trades where you have to deal with strangers in their houses on a daily basis. TIG work would probably be ideal if you can git gud at it, everybody knows it requires concentration so they're even more likely to leave you alone, and depending on the job you might even get to spend a lot of your time inside big tanks you're welding up and stuff.

        Anonymous

I prefer field welding in refineries just because it's more interesting and pays better than fab shops, but you do have to interact with more people. Depends how much OP can tolerate (and how well he can pass as a normal, if shy, guy and not a total fricking robot).

There are none. You have to interact with moronic npc primates no what you do. Getting money requires you to convince others to give it to you for regardless of what yo do unless you're some kind of savant day trader or something

  20. 2 months ago

Regardless of the work you do, you’ll have to interact with people to some extent.
To answer your question, utilities are usually good sources of solo jobs. I do meter installations and work out in the field alone. There’s a fair amount of interaction, mostly limited to notifying property owners I’ll be on their property for a bit.
I will say however that avoiding all social interaction only exacerbates mental problems speaking as someone who has harbored similar problems to you. Plus, the work takes me to all corners of my region, so you meet a lot of interesting people if you’re willing to talk; I’ve had a few people extend job offers for unrelated fields just by not acting like a total autist.
One of my favorite moments was talking to this older boomer after accidentally blowing his box up; dude didn’t really care and was going on a cheerful ramble about sailing when he was in the navy.

I'm fixing vacant apartments at the moment. I'm alone 2/3 of the day usually, it's pretty nice. You also don't need prior experience if you are bright enough to pick up light plumbing, electrical, drywall, painting skills from youtube. It isn't great as far as being a career, but it is easily the nicest job I've had. I got a plumbing apprenticeship before this, the company put 100% of their effort into sales and it was miserable socially in addition to being very unethical. I quit after a week and a half. There are a lot of companies like that out there and you should try to sus out if that is the case during the interview or by reading reviews. I wasted a lot of time and 1400 on tools before I realized what it was.

I hired a pretty girl to go interview with prospective janitorial contracts. All she does is go be pretty, take notes on the total amount of desks, the number of window panes and glass doors, and other stuff. She sends me the info and I place a bid with them. Gov offices are my bread and butter. I look to clear 150k this next year (2025) but I already clear 100k working alone, going cleaning when everyone is out of the office. I can go start my day at 6:00pm or 1:00am and it's all the same to them, so long as I'm done by 8:00am.

The only downside is I can never take a vacation and work about 6 hours every day of the week, even if I'm sick.

The one really important thing to know is how to efficiently clean glass immaculately. I'm talking back-lit by the sun, full glass doors without a single imperfection. That's easy enough once you get it down.

Very neet friendly industry. Frick cleaning houses. Shit is NOT worth it, and every client is a Karen c**t. "ohhh snickers, stop biting the man! Come here, Snickers! ohhhh.... whosa good boy?.... Sorry, anon, she has a will of her own!". Frick that. Single mothers dominate bidding, anyways. Stick to commercial.
