Thoughts on Russian surplus ammo

Got 5000 rounds of steel case Tula .308 for $.24 per round. I usually only buy Federal or Winchester, but those are over $1 per round.
These were too cheap to not try out. Are they safe to shoot out of my AR10? They look pretty old, but I put two mags (20 rounds) downrange and no issues so far.

AKgay here. Tulammo is fine, the steel case is a little more rough on your chamber and barrel than brass but it's a none issue. You will have to shoot a frick ton of the stuff to have any real wear happen specifically because of it. 24CPR for even that is a fricking steal too, the absolute cheapest .308 I can find is 70CPR. Good fricking buy and enjoy shooting.

I shoot steel case 308 and it's absolute garbage for accuracy. Obviously that's a given for Russian ammo but the 308 is exceptionally inaccurate.

      Or you are exceptionally inaccurate

I am normally inaccurate, not exceptionally so.

For 24CPR I will take the shit keyholing after 50 yards and be content, seriously that's cheap as frick for .308

Facts that's why I keep buying it lmao.

Groups were about 4"-5" at 100yd. Definitely worse that Fed or Win. Still on target though.

WTF are you shooting it out of?
Out of my PAP M77, I was landing every shot on a man size steel plate at 500yds using 5x magnification.

Yeah man, I was hitting squirrels at 1000 yards with 2.5x magnification with a CETME.

          Jealous thoughts.

From five times as far, you hit a target five times as big, and this inconsistency bewilders you?

That's what I get with LC M80 from a rifle that shoots sub MOA with Barnes VorTx.

Yes but it's very dirty ammo and very inaccurate, treat it as planking ammo.

I love Russian steelcase, but Tula is the worst manufacturer. I still shoot it, perfectly fine for plinking. That’s an incredible price, nice pickup.
The only squib I have ever seen in IRL was Tula 7.62x54r though

it's okay so long as you don't use it in tilting bolt guns
for whatever reason tula cartridge works ammo blows up FALs and similar
I think it is loaded with very fast powder for the caliber, but that's just an assumption based upon it losing less velocity in short barrels than other brands

That is not surplus. It was really bad commercial production ammunition. At 24cpr with Bidenomics in effect it's still a good deal, but any gun that is in any way picky on ammunition will probably choke.
Accuracy and reliability are poor. Powder loads seem to be all over the place, some damn near squib while others are massively overloaded.

Tula 7.62x39mm and 9mm are a lot less bad, but their .308 was terrible. If it shoots ok and you're happy blasting it, then have fun.

I've seen it blow a FAL, a Zastava M77 and get stuck in a bolt action. That was likely an extremely bad batch. Only gun that liked it was a PTR-91.

      >military .308
      What?

Military uses 7.62x51mm, but the difference between that and .308 is minimal so it's semantics.

      >surplus
      You are the moron.

      He is correct.

As you can see, there is surplus ammunition in that caliber but it's brass from Portugal. Not steel from Russia. Nobody used Tula 308 in military service.

This ammunition is advertised as 308, but that's technically not accurate. FNM ammunition was 7.62 M80 spec. They probably called it .308 in order to help sell it.

if we're gonna be autistically pedantic nobody said milsurp
at 24 cents it was certainly someone's surplus, since market rate is something like 75 cents now

.24CPR for .308 steel case is a great deal imo compared to the 70 plus CPR they sell for even tho i don't buy .308 I still check the market for it.
I usually just shoot my ZPAP M91 and run steel case reg shit and I don't have any issues with the ammo.

Shit, I thought 50cpr Wolf was a good deal but damn. Very good deal but there's a claim that Tula jackets are bad for barrels, it might just be BS made up by competing ammo manufacturers since it beats all others in price. Your rifle isn't designed for steel case extractions, but replacing an ejector is cheaper than wasting shit tons on ammo. I just wouldn't use it on my go-to rifle or handgun if it wasn't made for it, those only shoot brass so I don't get an extractor breakage when I need it most.

If I remember right the 308 150 grain Wolf is Tula and the 150 is Barnaul.
Always did like Barnaul in 308 and x39 for general shootins and the tula for frick around funbut that's a good price on some OP found

derp, the Wolf in 145 was Barnaul made

I do not have an AR10 and don't know how beefy their extractors and firing pins are compared to those on the AR15 BCG, but I do have an "AR47" and after several hundred rounds of steel cased 7.62x39 Tula it isn't uncommon to have a firing pin or extractor break.
Might be a good idea to buy spares just in case.
