This isn't a minecraft house.

Hey guys, trying to help my grandparents out.
Pic shows it. They have a tree or something starting to grow out of their roof. Besides getting up there and scrapping the dirt out, what can I do to really kill the root and seal up the area?

Is roundup still cancerous to humans? If so, is there a brand that isn't giving people autism?

Also, to seal around that edge, can I use the high durability caulking that is used around outdoor windows here? This is Florida an in an area that gets cat 4 hurricanes, lol. Or is there some sort of roofing tar that's preferred?

It's exactly as cancerous as it ever was. If you aren't spraying it all day like landscapers do, it's fine. Wear rubber gloves, pop on an n95 if it's a windy day, and don't drink it.

I'd check to see if it's growing between the shingles, or just in dirt that's accumulated and hasn't been washed off. What to do will be easier to tell knowing that.

If its growing between the shingles, would you advise having them taken off and doing a thorough job spraying and removing them?

Why does the gutter spout onto the roof?

The contractors in this development were notorious for cutting corners. Examples like window weatherstrips not covering the entire window bottom, extremely inconvenient planning in the kitchen for appliances, and even water spigots only on one side of the houses.

I'm not a house builder or designer, so I can't really say if any of this is well planned or not.

Wew lad, the wood has to be rotted under there or something if the plants are growing into it.

Honestly, I would roundup that b***h, let it die, cut it as close to possible to the shingles, assault the area with caulk, and wait for the roof leak because it must be coming if a frickin mango tree is growing there.

Take a look in the attic around that area too if possible.

Yikes. Yea, I should be able to get through the garage attic to see it. Will report back tomorrow.

          >mango sapling
          Holy shit you weren't kidding.

Nah I was just saying that from the sapling, I don’t think it’s a mango tree. Those look like these fern type weeds that pop up everywhere, I don’t think they grow much bigger than that but the size of those means it’s gotta be rooted decently.

Make sure you clean up any dirt and leaves and crap while you’re up there, that’s where the plants sprout and then the roots probably made their way under the shingles.

              >from the sapling
I mean from the thumbnail. I have a couple babby mango trees in pots and I’m not sure what the hell to do with them.

Gotcha, will do with the cleaning!

Hard to tell from the thumbnail but it looks a lot like macadamia seedlings...

which fits in with the area and also that kind of shaded cranny, in roofs/eaves which are notorious spots for rats and squirrels and other climbers to stash and dine on nuts and seeds, acorns, etc. Rats especially love macadamias, and stone fruits too.

Just like in gutters those areas also fill with dirt and grime and can stay damp long enough to make a perfect germination spot

                Delicious!
Grandparents do have squirrels that run around the house and climb up the back. There's some inconveniently planted palm trees are really close to the house. Two have palm fronds touching the roof. Grandparents had 3 or 4 instances of palm rats that got into the crawlspaces. Another "thank you" to the designers who also included an Oak tree in every plot around the neighborhood. The oak tree roots have not only messed up the sidewalks, but also people's driveways. One guy's tile driveway got a huge chunk torn out of it when their oaktree fell over during a hurricane.

But yea, will do a look around when up there. Appreciate everyone's help so far! I'll report back tomorrow with pictures.

I tried twice growing mango indoors as a decorative plant. Twice. Both died within a year. Wtf was I doing wrong? Never really had issues with other plants.

I tossed a bunch of mangos on the side of the house in half shade and like 90% of them sprouted in the shitty sandy soil. Not sure what happened with yours.

Why the frick would you use roundup? Get your fat ass up there and remove the dirt. See what is going on. Don’t fall through the roof if it feels rotted.

Hey guys, I went into the garage attic to check the area where the plant was growing.

What is all this shit??? Some sort of insulation? I didn't wade through it yet. This attic area covers 1/3 the garage and a guest bedroom, guest closet, and laundry room. I think it stops where a bathroom is located.

Shouldn't there be fiberglass cuts over the roof boards? There was "a new roof" (new shingles) put on 4 years ago from hurricane damage.

Soil is technically an insulator, yes.

no kidding, its not this "cellulose" insulation I've been youtube searching? Should I get a closer image picture to show?

I would hope that the roof would still be under warranty then. Find out and make them come fix it if it is under warranty

There's like, rodent shit pellets all over the tops of this debris and on the sides of the insulation. Is that something that would need to get replaced? House is 21-22 years old.

Is it safe for me to walk around up here if I tuck my jeans into a thick pair of socks with a pair of steel tip boots?

What kind of mask should I wear? An actual proper one with a rubber strap and whatever filter? Or those foam N95 ones that just hug the face?

Also, check this out. The other week, I was taking down some ceiling AC vent covers that had light mold growing on them. I noticed that none of the ceiling AC vents are properly sealed to the drywall. Two of them had this decaying "ductboard" in them. I bought a tub of duct sealant from Lowes and entombed them.

With the shitty mystery dirt insulation, is this room for caution for respiratory issues? Stuck my phone up into that air vent and seems clean on the inside.

Half-face cartridge respirator with goggles, or a full-face cartridge respirator. That stuff will get in your eyes if you rummage through it.

    Here's the aftermath.
Looks like a cross between Jack Frost having a nervous breakdown and my girlfriend's butthole. Just kidding, I'm not girl frost nor do I have a jackhole.

But maybe after I build up all these skills....

So I went around the whole house and got most of these sealed up. There's like 4 or 5 more that are on these 1.5 story ceilings. Need to figure out where to rent a larger step ladder to reach those.

There's also a few outlets that are hanging out of the wall. Looks like the screws stripped out of the jboxes and a few sunken in. Found a solid video on how to repair those and foam-calk the sides to seal them in. Going to get those foam inserts too to stop spiders and shit from crawling through.

To properly fix it tear off the shingles from the gutter about 2 ft from the outside of the drain, cut out the decking (it is rotten), put down new 7/16ths OSB, put down waterproofing underlayment on top, step flash the wall, install new shingles and then route that drain into the gutter.
