Thinking about getting on of these for storage. Maybe make a little ramp so I can drive my mower or 4 wheeler into it. Just for housing tools and materials for fencing. I got a few acres and don't want to commit to a pole barn yet and sheds that are about the same size that don't require a foundation cost as much or more.

I haven't, but I've looked into it. You're hitting the common use case for them since they make good storage. Since you have acreage you won't have to worry about any HOAs or other buttholes complaining. Make sure you put down good footers for the corners where all the weight rests, and as long as you can buy one and have it delivered at a good price go for it.

          >Make sure you put down good footers for the corners where all the weight rests, and as long as you can buy one and have it delivered at a good price go for it.

This is what I particularly like about them because we get monsoon-like rain on expansive clay soil.

You just need to focus on good deep footings for the corners. Hell, even with imperfect footings, a 20ft frame doesn't bend as long as you're just storing stuff like mowers/fence/spare tires and not super heavy shit like a pallette of brick. You can also re-level it without cradling it like a baby.

They aren't good as houses but they can be good storage depending on how expensive they are in your area. Just don't make too many large holes in them and don't puncture the roof.

Are you in a hot climate? 70F nights and 140F afternoons aren't kind to motors.

Placement in a spot that is shady in the afternoon is a good idea.

The standard vents are designed for cooler ocean climates or ports where the cargo isn't sitting in the sun for very long, or where the thermal mass of all the containers can resist temp extremes.

You might need to add some vents to the sides, they have kits for that. Vent fans would be helpful if you have a nearby power source (or solar vent).

If you're in a very hot place like Texas, it wouldn't be crazy to strap battens of different heights to the roof and attach some cheap corrugated roofing panels to the battens. This would both reflect heat and air gap.

Try to get a container that is white, grey, or yellow. The common maroon, brown, and dark blue containers get very hot inside just due to the paint jobs.

    Do it.

Like others have said they can get hot inside. I just ordered some fans off e-bay and will make a solar vent fan for this one when they arrive.

You do realize the vent I am going to make will be a vent powered by fans? To force air movement. Yes there will have to be another intake vent on the opposite side. But saying fans wont do shit is quite short sighted on your part.

yeaj it will dude, justa hole in the roof is enough to make heat come pouring out of the box. its still goingto be a miserable hell inside, but nowhere as hot as before.

all of these people need to just build polebarns around hte containers put solar on the roof for lights and leave well enough alone.

The obvious. If want to set up where it's cold study how industry and the military do container structures. Become your own expert to the level your project requires. None of this is difficult even for ESL as containers are global along with example websites.

Do you people only come to PrepHole for information? How do people born in the internet age not know how to swiftly find technical information why they have thousands of hours of computer time?

I did it therefore so can anyone else and it's so easy there is no excuse for not doing it if serious. If not serious then don't bother.

I was just asking if anyone here had used a shipping container as a shed. Like, paying a company 3 grand to have them drop a container on my property. Gardening at the north pole and black ops shipping container towers aren't really in the realm of what I'm trying to accomplish, like keeping my lawnmower out of the rain.

              Anonymous

In that case throw down two railroad ties (the first where you want the outboard end of the container as delivered on the truck or trailer to sit permanently) then when the delivery truck drives out from under most of it position the second tie. Driver lowers container and done. They're all experienced and rollback drivers deliver most small containers.
Never leave a container on the ground as they need air circulation beneath. That's basically all there is to it. You can more precisely level containers by shimming if want by jacking (large bottle jack with wood or metal load spreader beneath will do) and shimming.

      Anonymous

How would I store my vehicles then? Make like a ramp down to the doors? Wouldn't it flood? Or wouldn't exhaust fumes collect? Won't the sides rust out if they're constantly against damp, abrasive soil? Having a bunker sounds cool but impractical.

        Anonymous

Ignore bunkertards as they're mentally ill and their goal is not functional but autismal.

Mowers and four-wheelers fit fine and containers protect them well. You'll want a simple metal ramp or "dock plate" for easy driving in and out for small-diameter wheeled vehicles like mowers. Quads won't care.

Bonus, you can weld a jib off a corner fitting to hang a snatch block and use that to lift your mower or quad for maintenance.

Don't do this. They're only designed to carry load at the hard points where the twist locks go. Everywhere else they're about as strong as the foil hat worn by the guy who recommended burying it in the first place.

      Anonymous

This. This is the exact reason why everyone who's ever parked a car in a garage has died, because leaving the door open isn't enough when you're running the engine for a grand total of 5 seconds inside the buidling. Especially with the exhaust more than likely pointing out the open door.

We did exactly this at a place I used to work at, used one to store the riding mower and gas, one to store materials, and one as a workshop

They get very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter, the one that was set up as a "shop" wasn't really usable in the summer because of this, it was more of a "get what you need and set it up outside" situation.
We also ran electricity to it and put lighting up, even had running water outside.
We also had a cabinet that was super insulated and heated with a light bulb for storing stuff that would be destroyed by freezing in winter (paint, etc)

isn't really an issue as long as you're not leaving it running inside. that said you'll want ventilation for the heat anyway

My dad has had one of these for years, just random storage for stuff, plus yard equipment.
He had it put down on the north side of the pole barn, so it gets a decent amount of shade. Works as it should. Just make sure you get one in good condition, there's a lot of crap out there.

Truth. Get either "cargo ready" or "one trip" grade unless you can personally inspect and choose a lesser grade box rather than deal with crap like holes, rust (Corten most fricking certainly rusts), twisted containers and bad door gaskets.

If you get one with top (horizontal) gasket seepage you can weld some angle or flat bar above the door gasket as a water deflector.I did on the two cheap containers I bought before I learned better grades are worth the money.

if you want it to last put a corrugated iron roof with optional spouting on it and also sit it on some concrete filled drums or bricks. Pros are they're solid, secure and you can move them around easily enough even with the roof. Cons are they are c**ts to modify, heat up like a b***h and tend to rust (i.e. why you put a roof on them. Also thieves tend to target them because they assume you're storing expensive shit in them like motorbikes and what not.

      Anonymous

The only ones that tend to rust were condemned for cargo use and are sold as WWT or "storage" grade. Best to buy "one trip" or certified "cargo ready". Learn container grades.

      >the weight of the dirt totally wont cave the roof in and the sides since they are made of corrugated metal and are not designed to withstand alot of force since containers are meant to be stacked and the corners are the strongest part of the container and take much more weight and force than the roof and walls

      sure. go for it

it's easier, cheaper, and more robust to just do it with wood

      Anonymous

Not easier (containers are instantly usable on delivery).
Not cheaper for the equivalent weatherproof result.
Certainly not more robust unless you're rich and using lignum vitae or something and then it can still burn down.

Wood requires a floor unless you like earth.

containers aren't as cheap as you think, especially right now

      Anonymous

      >“When the supply chains start to shorten – and eventually they will – this will release a large amount of empty containers, especially in the US. This will cause widespread congestion problems in the second half of 2022 and in 2023, in terminals as well as container depots, unless carriers and container leasing companies start planning for this development now,” said Sea-Intelligence in its latest weekly report.
Sounds like another glut of containers is coming, which could drive the cost down to the cost of transporting them offsite.

      Anonymous

      They are, I priced them.

        Anonymous

Which GRADE did you price and what do you need a c**tainer to do for you?

Cost will drop (we need a recession so I can get at least two more HCs with doors on both ends) but normally not to transport cost since they can be scrapped onsite, the scrap loaded into intact containers then sent offshore with other scrap. Basic torch work and done all the time, the crappiest boxes would go first not the pretty ones which will easily sell as always.

Noobs frequently self-assrape buying trash WWT boxes. You can replace the end door gaskets and fix them but the corrosion is an asspain so no more for me.

          Anonymous

          >what do you need a c**tainer to do for you?
You container gays are unreal, he literally said he needs to store random shit in it so it's not out in the rain. Do you "study" containers like so many other people on this board?

            Anonymous

Storage needs are actually specific and climate matters.

If you get a WWT grade (they usually are not water tight because end door gaskets are a major cause of their rejection from cargo-worthy status) they can become humidity traps as rain makes its way inside.

If you weld a piece of flat bar or angle between the corner fittings with room to clear the end door bars and leave no gaps that prevents water getting a direct shot at the end door gasket. You can also buy gasket kits but that's more money and work including derusting then coating the surfaces gaskets mount to and crush against as those are normally rusty.
