I guess its completely dependent on whether they are reliable enough to be seriously considerable for defense.

I remember hearing Federal Punch and CCI Velocitors both met FBI standads already, so I have to ask what the difference between these and CCIs other .22lr defense offering is?

These have a jacketed hollow point projectile, everything else is just plated.

They're so new nobody has any good information on how they perform yet. I wasn't very impressed with the Punch they came out with a while back, in tests it performed essentially the same as other ammo already on the market. It performed noticeably worse than CCI Mini Mag HPs on small game.

My gut feeling is that would make things worse, not better. A jacket is thicker than plating so that suggests the hollow point would be less likely to expand compared to a plated hollowpoint. But without testing that's just mental masturbation.

Either buy a couple boxes knowing they're unproven with the expectation you'll be testing them yourself, or wait for data to come in.

          Not op
I didn't understand this concept also
Aren't these two concepts competing against each other?
          Hollow point gets bigger
          Jacketed doesn't

i want to know this too

does the jacket help for penetration and then the hollow point makes it expand after into cavity? or is this fudd science?

Just spitballing but you can probably use a softer lead when you have the retentive properties of a copper jacket. Softer lead would improve expansion. I mean, most hollow points are jacketed. 22LR is the exception to the rule, even 22WMR uses jacketed hollow points.

Copper jackets were initially added to reduce lead fouling in the rifling caused by increased temperatures and speeds from smokeless powder. But it also adds stability to the soft lead. If you've ever seen ballistic gel tests of 22lr hollow points, you're typically left with just a small bit of the end. That is catastrophic expansion. It's much more desirable to have controlled expansion and as close to 100% bullet weight retention as possible. This dumps the bullets energy very quickly into the target. Most 22lr is plated, which reduces fouling. I'm guessing that adding the jacket is to try and control the expansion.

Anon, are you moronic? Of course ammo designed around penetrating to an acceptable depth in a person isn't going to perform as well on small game as ammo that's designed for maximum effect on small game that doesn't require much penetration.

OFC that's the expected behavior, but the point is that it's a data point to consider. If I had real-life data shooting people I'd share that but alas I don't so raccoons and coyotes are all I have. We also have no idea what OP's intended purpose for this ammo is, so perhaps that's relevant. It can easily be ignored if it doesn't matter to you.

The purpose of the punch, as they have so aptly named it, is to punch through. Standard 40gr round nose tends to deform easier and deflect. It's also better out of a shorter pistol sized barrel than standard ammo as well. If you want small game, stick with any generic 36gr hp from a reputable manufacturer. If you want to try to use .22 as a self defense, buy the fancy shit.

I'm withholding judgement until I see independent testing. 2 major problems with .22lr hollow points.
    >reliability
    >sufficient penetration
If it shows both then it'll be good. If not, it'll be no better than what is available.

There's .22lr that is reliable and does offer sufficient penetration though.

No way it will fly at 950 fps out of 4" barrel.

Lucky Gunner clocked the 32gr Stingers as 970 fps out of a S&W 43C (2" barrel) and at 1160 fps out of a Ruger MKIV (4.4" barrel).

Are these basically just stingers marketed for self defense? I can't find a picture of the cartidge itself so I can't tell if it's similar to stingers or normal .22LR

The projectile is different. It is a jacketed hollow point. Stingers use a copper plated hollow point.

A hollow point in a .22lr is basically pointless since the cavity is too small to reliably expand on impact.

I guess we have to wait and see if CCI knows how to make ammo or if they're just morons.

What kind of Ruger? I've got an LCRx in 22LR, thinking it might work well with the Uppercut load but we'll have to wait and see.
