NTA, but if I took 6 months off of work for reasons other than FMLA I'd have to quit and then re-apply when there's an opening. Not everyone (myself included) can afford to just leave their job without a guarantee of getting it back.

This is not the flex you think it is. That you have succeeded in attaining an average wage despite your lack of formal education does nothing to change the fact that you have sacrificed your freedom and the prime years of your life to a job.

                Anonymous

Where I live the average annual wage across all fields is $50k and the average annual wage in my field is $35k. And I don't owe a cent of debt to anyone for anything. I'm really not too upset about being unable to go do a 6 month long hike, I work a 4x10 schedule so every weekend is a 3 day weekend and I've got 5 weeks of PTO on top of that so I have more than enough time to do what I want. The point is there's no need to be so hostile toward people just for not living the exact same life as you or not having made all the same perfect choices you did.

                Anonymous

That's a good point and I apologize for being an ass hole. I do still think you should want greater freedom for yourself and that you may be leaving something on the table by staying at the same company so long but it's your life.

No one is driving and leaving their car parked for weeks or months at a time. You fly, then take a shuttle. Or just take a bus (which will take forever). Stay one (1) night at a hotel and start hiking in the morning.

I’m a strange, possibly autistic person in that traveling to the trailhead scares the living shut out of me while hiking for a few weeks isn’t daunting at all. Like, what if I can’t find the trailhead? What if the shuttle doesn’t show up? What if the hotel overbooked? What if they lose my luggage?

It’s basically been scrubbed from the internet, but what little concrete info there is was scant to begin with. Googling “grandma Gatewood fraud” will bring up some forum posts on White Blaze of BPL from the early or mid 2000’s talking about it.

The source is Earl Shaffer, who claims that on one of his thruhikes Gatewood would end up in town or at camp before him, despite him being well ahead of her in the trail. He claims it happened regularly during the hike.

Let’s see what her failures are and how PrepHole would stack up:

      >went outside

      >convinced a girl to go with her
Again, this is an impossible feat for the average PrepHoleist

That’s about the limit of the childhood obesity having anime watchers who post here, but her intention was to camp and try out some gear. Anyone claiming every trip they take is epic 20 mile days scrambling across boulder fields is probably gay.
      >gets her bear line stuck in a tree
The only people this hasn’t happened to are people who don’t hang their food. She did use the remaining line to suspend her food off the ground to keep out various critters, something PrepHole insists isn’t necessary.
      >chooses a bad site, cheap tent is blown down
I don’t see much discussion about site selection, but I have seen her tent mentioned before. I guess that’s a draw.

      >bailed out
This is really where the difference comes in. Most men would have stayed, even the mouth breathers of PrepHole. Just set up your tent and try again (unless it’s damaged, in which case, yeah, bail out if you can).

Hopefully she learned a lesson and figured out how to use big rocks when pegs won’t do.

As it turns out, most people are generally good and the people who aren't don't go far out of their way to do bad things. Bad people do bad things locally, they don't travel up to long mountain trails with packs full of gear to do bad things. Crime generally doesn't travel. I guess a particular type of serial killer might, but despite what the media would have you believe such serial killers are exceedingly rare.

Yep. I live in the same county as Detroit but we only lock our doors at night when everyone goes to bed and lots of people, including us, leave their lawnmowers and snowblowers out in the front yard overnight without them getting stolen. You can walk around safely at 3am with no worries.

I am planning on starting around april 18th and do the entire trail through. Did a month of it last year in august and my experience was orgasmic and life changing. I had to stop to come home for family reasons, but I've been eyeing it ever since. RN I'm just trying to figure out how the frick I want to get to Springer mountain from Syracuse NY if I can possibly not fly.

I can respect the physical endurance it takes to conplete a thru-hike but I just can't understand the motivation? For me, after 3 or 4 days MAX I am desperate for a proper shower, proper food, my own bed, privacy, to shit in an actual toilet, to wash my clothes. I just don't understand someone walking for MONTHS on end, to an arbitrary end point carrying like 2 fricking pairs of socks, 2 shirts and 2 underwear, eating disgusting hiking food and living like a homeless person. WHY? What would possess someone to do this? And it's not like it's healthy either - this just seems like it would do long term damage without the amount ofnstress you're putting on your body. Amicalola Falls State Park has a nice visitors center and lodge/ restaurant. It has an approach trail to Springer Mountain that is 8 miles long. A lot of people start the Appalachian Trail at Amicalola Falls State Park.
You can fly into Atlanta, take the MARTA to the REI Store in Sandy Springs GA and take their shuttle up to Amicalola Falls State Park. Another option is to fly into Chattanooga TN and get an Uber/ Lyft to Amicalola SP, get a room at the lodge to set up your gear and start the AT the next morning.
There are a lot of YouTube videos showing people starting off at Amicalola Falls SP.

      >her tent flies away in the wind.
      holy shit, my sides
like, how bad do you have to be to let that happen

PrepHole has repeatedly shown that it doesn’t know the very basics of campsite selection. This woman’s choice was poor in that the ground was too soft and it was too prone to wind. Poor gear selection is another part of it (stakes too short, not being able to set up on the leeward side of a hill due to shelter type, large free standing tent, etc). She also mentions campsites, but there are only two shelters along the Pinhoti and no designated sites (just a few established ones, which, as always, are less than ideal).

At first I found her cute, but after seeing how incompetent she is, I've completely lost any interest. I hope she'll never reproduce, people that are this pathetic shouldn't stay in the gene pool. What was she thinking starting a 3500km hike with completely no experience??

She wouldn’t be alone in that regard, but that’s not what the video is. Even the title says it’s a shakedown hike. I’m not sure if pic means a large number of people have 1-3 nights of experience, or that’s the longest trip they’ve been on.

I spend over 40 days/nights a year in a tent on horrendous camping spots with winds in excess of 40 to 50mph and with very rocky soil. Just get big rocks and put in the corners of your tent to keep it weighted down if its a free standing tent like most use. If its a trekking pole tipi/tarp tent then wrap your guy lines around big rocks and also put very big rocks on top of your stake locations.

Ive yet to lose a tent and i hate even typing those tips up if it helps more moronic homosexuals and women go shit up the outdoors even more for instaisraelite reddit points.

I quit too before Georgia was done. Its fricking tough going up and down hill all day on those Georgia mountains. It's not a party and constant good times like videos make it out to be. You hike all day long, you get dehydrated because water sources can't be trusted makes anxiety spike through the roof, you feel difficulties never seen before. But there are beautiful moments, I met amazing people in my time out there. Now just section hike. I don't have the insanity to complete a thru hike and it's fine be me, those people have my upmost respect

The AT is pretty crowded. The social aspect is the appeal for a lot of young people. Lots of bears too. Wallkill NFR has something like 3 bears per square mile. GSMNP is like 2 but they’re all habituated to people and stick close to the shelters and other designated sites.

Oh, but they're out there. Funny story time. They started talking to me, we all smoked pot and chilled at Woodchucks hostel. One dude who is the owners friend, or just some dude who spends a lot of time there decided to do acid with one of the older hippie mamas. I wasn't aware of this. Idk if you have stayed at woodchucks, but he turned his detached garage into a bunk house. The dude who took acid was walking around with a flashlight, waking up EVERYONE. There was all ages, and walks of life. He thinks the Rainbow kids are traveling gays, and thought they cut holes into the mattresses so John's could come through and suck their dicks through the hole of the mattress. He left saying he was gonna get a gun, and all of us got up and out of bed to grab whatever we could to beat the man's skull in when he came back through the door. He did not come back. I was up all night in the bed waiting for him to try something. I woke up early, he and the hippie mama were at her van drinking coffee. They were laughing about it, but he eventually apologized and was like this is why I don't take acid lol. Crazy shit. All those Rainbow kids were traveling together, and all staying in this giant purple green gypsy looking tent.

    >What would possess someone to do this?
I have no immediate self control(zoomer) and will do the absolute minimum including neglecting my own health unless I'm forced, even if I hate every second of it(bad executive function). The trail and the need to purchase food provides that structure for me. As humiliating as it is as a man, I fundamentally submit to my conditions and will not take care of myself until I am forced to. That does not mean I need to give myself to another person. On the contrary, I can submit to many things and sensations. Last hike I cried joy because my head was clear and I didn't have migraines and I felt good for the first time in 12 years. The exercise, the hunger, the elements, the views, even the mosquitoes gave me relief. Even the loneliness confusingly subsided though I was mostly entirely alone the section I hiked. I was suddenly let free of my own mental prison. The foot weights temporarily removed, and the cuffs taken off. And it's the fricking school system and people putting themselves onto me as if they could give me what I needed better than what we evolved for millions of years to have could. The freedom and migraine dry spell lasted for about 3 months after I returned, and I felt a sense of arousal(that was somehow not sexual but had the same "pop" to it) looking at images of nature when I returned to my glum cubicle living space back in the city and wagecucked to help my parents with something. Even exercise was(and still is) somehow easier for me now. The pleasure I get from exercising my body is increased since I took this trip. You underestimate the benefits of hiking and being outdoors on the mind of someone who feels subhuman.

hm, not the guy youre replying to but glad to see you improved a bit going outside. I've been unwillingly confined to my home 99% of the time for around 5 years now due to mental (ex tried to kys and almost got accused of murder til she recovered and acquitted me) and physical illness (developed auto immune illness due to the stress) but also reached a point where I can go out again and thriving again

In the off chance that I'm not screaming in the void and you may be ready for change my advice is that you clean your home a little bit at a time, being careful not to clean until it mentally anguishes you. Something about cleaning makes you confront how vile you've really become and its worse than the nightmares and pain and whatever. Start with the kitchen, keep the sink clean and have the objective of having a clean sink for week, then throw out all the rot in your fridge. Get a paint mask with a p100 filter to mask the smells.

After kitchen, do bathroom, then after bathroom, do just your bed. Clean the sheets. Now you at least you have a clean place to eat, shit, and sleep. And take little projects at a time. The process can take months, as long as it gets a little better over time. And when its too much go PrepHole

You can listen to audio books while you clean to keep your mind off the feeling of despair.. one thing at a time anon
