The Germans were very well known for using vast quantities of captured tanks and other AFV's, particularly french and russian vehicles, in their own militaries. Any other first world armies that have been known to do this in anywhere near comparable numbers? Even the obsolete shit the germans used would be refurbished and refitted either as assault guns or recovery vehicles or even as the base of new german tanks entirely.

    >particularly french and russian vehicles
    >french
No, french vehicles were mostly useless as AFV. Most of them were turned into 2nd rate casemates and tractors. French arty was more useful, aero engines were even worse than french tanks (the GR 14M was the best but too unrealiable).

Czech vehicles were far more relevant. And they also reused/rebuilt a lot of soviet armor and factories, also arty. Converted or not

Somua S35 were reasonably capable and served with German forces in Finland and Normandy into 1944.

Even Renault R 35 and Renault R 40 light tanks fought in Normandy and Paris in 1944.

Germany had such need for AFV that they used a lot of light tanks (even the FT 17) for patrols and against the resistance. If you compare the Czech tank industry with France tank service the difference is noticeable.

no, and WWII germany wasn't a first world army, it was a dysfunctional mess run by morons and their cronies. These conversions were done out of desperation, nobody else did it because it's a foolish thing to have to do.

They basically had a bunch of modern (for the time) tech that just dropped in their lap, what would you have done with this stuff? Nowadays at least most armies know enough to destroy their shit they leave behind but ig back in 1940 this was too revolutionary to try

A less dysfunctional state would dump most of that equipment on their allies and tributaries because they could make enough of their own weapons, which would streamline their production and logistics.

You heroes were "surprised" by thousands of T-34 and it took them two years to find a "solution" to them. Which immediately failed en masse.
To get beaten by fricking gommies (which killed half of their army themselves) is the lowest of the low.

No, they were defeated by the Anglo military, industrial and economic aid to Rusia and numerous campaigns against key resources within the German zone. Communists? All their trucks were American and Canadian. The fuel? American. The train engines? American. Even the egg powder the army ate was American. The commies like to claim credit but really the Anglos exploited the asiatic horde's tolerance for mass losses, a feature which is Notable still today.

Here however the numbers, Zhukov, and Khrushchev disagree with neosoviet revisionism from communism enthusiasts. War could and would have been won with a worse tank than T-34 but not with worse logistics.

They overcame the T-34 with no issue, simply by improvising a bit. The soviets also lost more T-34s than the total amount of tanks the Germans lost.
Basically, the soviets were slaughtered by the Germans in basically every battle, but were able so sustain the enormous losses, thanks to western supplies, western bombing, Germans being distracted elsewhere, and the soviets being willing to decimate their own population, which they never recovered from.
Ëven towards the end, when the Germans had nothing left, the soviets still took absurdly disproportionate losses.

The "rest of the world" being Europe. America didn't even step in until 1942 and the war was over in 3 years.

the only allied nation germany actually beat 1-on-1 was france
against britian, they were essentially at a strategic stalemate due to the channel preventing any crossings
but relatively equal engagements in north africa, where britian was capable of repelling german advances by themselves, show that germany was far from being able to beat britian

if they couldnt even beat the brits, they definitely couldnt beat either the US or the USSR alone
all 3 at once just ensured the war was over sooner instead of later

Even with the BEF, Germany alone outnumbered the Allied troops in France and also had much more front-line aircraft. The German army also had priceless live-fire combat experience, whereas a large portion of France's army was reservists only very recently called up. They were fine as fortress troops, but as reserves in the Sedan they broke and opened the door for Rommel, even though France's best absolutely pummeled Germany's best at Gembloux.

Israel is the only example I can think of, they have a few stuff in their museums that they captured and used, iirc. There simply haven’t been that many wars since WW2 where one side is desperate enough to press captured AFVs into service.

  4. 1 month ago

The Germans couldn't even build enough trucks which is why they rolled into the Soviet Union with so many ones captured from the Polish, French, or anyone else. So of course they'd do the same with AFVs when it was feasible. But it usually isn't feasible for very long because you run out of spare parts. The same thing eventually happened with all of these different captured trucks they couldn't support. So more and more you had Panzer Divisions and other high value units just sitting around waiting for fuel.
If any of the German high command looked at the sheer geographic scale of the Soviet Union and were rightfully concerned they weren't listened to.
As is the German habit they will inevitably get themselves into a hopeless strategic situation surrounded by enemies and then claim some conspiracy against them when they wonder why as to why all of this happened.

Certainly not first world at the time, but Communist China won their civil war largely with the arms captured from the Japanese in Manchuria that were given to them by the USSR, including some armored vehicles and artillery pieces. Much of that material was then passed on to North Korea.
