I suspect you've never hung out with WW2 vets while sharing a drink.. probably not old enough now that most WW2 guys are gone. After my grandfather was sunk by a U-boat in the Med and waiting to be repatriated to his home country, he befriended a ghurka and they became life long friends. His ghurka buddy and crew would routinely wander amongst the sleeping soldiers at night looking for german infiltrators. When discovered, they'd slit their throats in their sleep. When reminiscing about this down at the Legion, it wasn't boastful. It was just something that happened, and it happened a lot.

Not everybody around here is a minor, anon. I have met multiple german WW2 veterans, mostly grandfathers of friends, who were more than willing to share their stories in the early 90s. The family stories were not that interesting as everybody was in they airforce or working at headquarters in some staff capacity.
I have also seen a lot of the fotos that got moved to secret boxes from the albums sometime after the war.
