Invest what? Lithuania, the biggest of the three did decide to buy 54 Leo2a8s and this has left the politicians scrambling to figure out where to get the 2 billion (a year's military budget) to get them.

What's it like to be in a tiny military like that?

Other militaries also have infantry units and I don't think a grunt gets to witness the whole might of a huge army anyway. So probably like that, except you get to go home on the weekends because the base is at most 2 hours away from home.

Ukraine isn't in NATO and I fear that it will never be a full member but after the EU and the US pussying out on supporting them after only 2 years, I can see plenty of politicians deciding to throw the Baltics under the bus with similar attempts to not escalate too hard or too fast.

Tanks are deprecated as a concept and IFVs and artillery are more important. Wouldn't make sense for one of these countries to bankrupt themselves maintaining an air force when Russia has invested so heavily into air defenses.

      Anonymous

      >Tanks are deprecated as a concept
This is complete fricking nonsense, tanks are still very useful. They're direct fire guns with heavy frontal armor, they have amazing fire control, thermals, etc and can kill basically anything except another equivalent MBT or a really souped up hardened bunker.
They're not useful in the case of the baltic countries because they are unlikely to go on deep offense (which is what tanks are made for, and most useful for) and are instead going to do a series of defensive actions until the country is overrun or heavier backup arrives. You can do the same thing with a metric frickton of ATGM teams/mortars without the need to fuel them to the same degree or maintain them pre-war. Just have a storage depot with Javelins and hand them out when shit gets hairy.

      God I hate dronegays btw.

IFVs do the same thing and are generally killed with the same tools used to kill tanks, so they're not actually meaningfully less armored. Under what circumstances is a 120mm gun absolutely required and nothing less can get the job done, but also you don't have the ability to call in aircraft/drone/artillery strike to handle it?

IFVs cannot facilitate breakthrough attacks. Also, even if in a minor sense an IFV can perform an assault, it'd take far greater casualties than a tank force would. An IFV cannot mount a significant cannon, cannot mount an active protection system, does not have the armor to withstand anti-tank rounds (and yes, tanks do in fact have the armor to absorb significant attack), and after adding that shit would more than double the weight of the vehicle it STILL would take more casualties than a tank.

Lithuania IS getting tanks, though. Thoughts on this? It's going to cost us the equivalent of a year's worth of military budget for 54 tanks.

The reasoning is the government wants to have an entire actual division with most things that come with it.

  10. 1 month ago

What would tanks accomplish for them that other equipment can't replicate? They're universally going to be on the defense at the beginning of any war. Anything anti-armor is perfectly fine instead.

Well the soviets did take over their countries by force. Sent tens of thousands of people to gulags from each country and murdered their officers and intellectuals. Sent in thousands of russians in an attempt to basically slowly turn the countries russian. A form of cultural genocide that Russia has done since forever. Due to being held hostage by the soviet union, the countries are still behind the rest of Europe. So yes, victims. Russian schools apparently just teach their kids that all their former subjects we're better off under them and nothing bad ever happened to the people in those countries due to soviet action. They've been teaching "alternative" history there for quite a while now.

The thing is they never fought they just rolled over and showed their belly thats why basically no one gave crap about them after ww2. They could have held their territory some time because Russians only outnumbered them 2:1 and they had new units near the borders with little to no training. Ofc most of them blame is on the authoritarian leaders they had who hoped they will remain in power but instead their bloodline was removed from this earth.

truth is despite holding all the cards (Lend-Lease), Roosevelt/Truman just weren't interested in trying to seriously push back on Soviet demands, no matter how obviously they were just doing their own form of imperialism
Allies could have said after Stalingrad made eventual German defeat obvious that future deliveries were dependent on Soviet recognition of pre-1939 borders and the Russians would have had no choice but to accept, but no

In the case of Balts, the most important are:
    - An efficient system of training and maintaining reserves. Like Finland, which has 870,000 men.
    - A strong air and missile defense.
    - Strong artillery. Rocket-based to isolate the battlefield. Barrel-launched on wheels to destroy advancing troops.
    - Anti-tank weapons. Both a lot of hand-held and tank destroyers on pick-ups.
To put up a pretty effective resistance for a while, that would be enough.

    >Jets
Missle defence systems can do the job well enough. For counter-offensive operations NATO allies can bring their own jets.
    >Tanks
About to become obsolete, but they have them. Baltics true strength isn't in jets or tanks, I'm sure they can hold the ground.

What the baltics really need is a unified tactical nuke belt. That would make pidors truly mad

      >unified
They'll nuke each other or loot it.
Nukes are better kept in the silos of developed nations.

Do Americans generally think that Baltics are like Russia back in 90s? What do you think this is, middle east?

You're right and that speaks volumes about Eastern Euros not improving for 30 years with no communism.
Take away EU gibs or Muscovite oppression and they'll go back to trying to genocide their neighbors over random villages that purportedly belonged to a king of theirs a Millenium ago. Just like Russians.

They're still behind Western Europe; hell, former East Germany is still behind West Germany; but to say they haven't improved at all is complete bullshit. There was a post of a Russian crying and reveling in sick revenge fantasies due to how much nicer people in Poland live when he visited there.

That can be ammended quite easily. If the pidors get too uppity they might finally get to feel what ethnic cleansing actually means themselves.
