I saw some videos and it looks like a beach. Nothing impassable about it.
It was a water reservoir. It's thoroughly silty mud for potentially over a meter.
Have you ever driven an ATV through really, really thick mud? like mud that still contains a frickton of water. It's easy as frick to get bogged. Add on more weight, like say an armored transport or vehicle loaded with dudes, and you are bound to go nowhere.

Hovercrafts can get stuck in mud too. Everything gets stuck in mud. Mud is the true equalizer because nobody wants to be in it.
