How are you going to breed horses with a sheep and a cow? Smeghead

check out puddle duck racers. You can build one in a couple weekends with little investment (<200$) and decide if you really want to progress.
I don't think it makes sense to start a months long build costing $$$$$+ for something that you've never done before.

I'd suggest to never put money into a boat. Instead, volunteer at your local dock to help with the repairs and such if you want the hands-on experience and rent a boat if you want to set sail. Back in the day, there were boat building classes where I used to live, there might be some in your area too.

Foam is tricky to do right and if you frick it up water ingress can do a lot of damage.
As another anon said boats are expensive to maintain but building one is on a whole other level. For the price of a new diy build you can buy a fully kitted out much better used boat. Also you have to decide what's more important, the build or the sailing. If its the build then go for it but if it's the sailing than you'll be putting it off for years (yes years) by home building and fitting out.
Also if you want to build, for the love of god buy plans from a reputable boat designer, don't do what Doug does and make it up as you go along

Did he BTFO all the Dougn'ts by making it to the Gulf of Mexico?

A raft made of soda bottles and driftwood could make it down the ICW and it wouldn't cost you a marriage, your retirement funds or over a decade of your life.

He's taking a 2 months break from making videos to build storage boxes for his junk from old rotten pallets and also to get his captain's license - yes the same one he said multiple times is a useless piece of paper that people only take to feel important. Turns out his entire talk-fu still isn't enough to help him get any re-such job without one. (Next he's going to find out insurance and inspection are also required and not optional)

Forgot to add that if you are serious about a foam core build then look up Sven Yrvind, he make alot of foam boats, their micro cruisers but he goes over construction techniques and such. Also a very interesting guy with a great life story

start with a flat bow plywood sailing dinghy, simple construction and highest chance of being seaworthy once you're done

There have been some boatbuilding threads on here before though I don’t know if the shitty PrepHole archive supports searching. For a boat of that scale you’re talking a LOT of work and money. For something smaller like the boats on this website https://hvartial.kapsi.fi/ they can be done in a couple weekends.

What do you mean, foam core instead of balsa? My boat has a foam core but still balsa around the deck fittings. Foam is resistent to water. I dont see why you wouldnt want to use it.

    Build a SCAMP or something.
It's a small and stable boat.

It's a fun project, I built a Bolger Diablo several years ago and plan on building a Tolman skiff in the future. From a financial prospective you're rarely going to come out ahead compared to buying a used boat, but it's a very rewarding feeling being on the water in something you made yourself. Additionally from a performance perspective plywood core/epoxy skin boats tend to be lighter and stronger than comparable fiberglass boats and are easily repaired, unlike aluminum.

I would recommend you start out with something on the small end of the spectrum, there are many little tricks to working with fiberglass that can only be figured out by doing it, if you totally screw something up it's better to find out in a small boat closer to shore. I'm also a little leery of foam, I like the thought of having some solid wood to back things up if you ever ran into something, although it's probably fine.

I would also suggest you look at smaller power skiff designs. I really don't understand the appeal of small sailboats, they're too small to have a decent displacement speed and don't have enough freeboard to handle a chop while staying dry, so you're constantly hunting for days in that ideal 10-15kt wind range where you have enough of a breeze to have fun but the waves aren't onerous. I've owned Sunfish and Lasers, I also frequently crewed on a Thistle, if you want to sail get a windsurfer, they're way more fun.

I have wanted to build an oz goose for years now but marine plywood remains insanely expensive. If you just want to get out on the water it is hard to justify the cost and time of building vs buying a used boat.

      Anonymous

Just, build it out of cabinet grade and paint the shit out of it?

$280 for marine plywood doesn't sound terrible in order not to die in a boat though.

      Anonymous

you don't need marine grade for a little dinghy, decent exterior grade plywood will survive as long as you prepare it well and don't leave it in the water the whole season. The important thing is just having waterproof glue, marine grade mostly just has the nicest surfaces and fewest voids and knots and things, but just pick the nicest sheets out of the pile and it'll be fine.
But on the other hand, even a floating box like the goose still takes a lot of time and work to finish and the wood is only a relatively small portion of the cost compared to resin and paint and hardware and sails etc, is pricey vs cheap wood really going to make the difference?

You only need some screen material & flexseal

Yes, actually. Get some fiberglass/aluminum/whatever ribs. Coat in screen. Coat in flex seal.

You just made a resin boat. Gg

depending on how much of a boat you need you could just cut a large tree in half and hollow out the interior; that's what pioneer did back in the day.

There is a guy whose channel I follow who built some pretty impressive fibreglass catamarans in the jungles of Panama. He's currently building kayaks at the moment.
Considering all the crazy shit he's built throughout the years with minimal resources, on an island, in the middle of the Panamanian jungle he deserves to be crowned king of PrepHole
