Egypt is backing the army. UAE is backing the rebels.

The US wants the rebels to win because they support democracy while the army supports a dictatorship.

      >The US wants the rebels to win because they support democracy
Aren't the rebels a militia that cooperated to establish the current dictatorship? And isn't their leader a dictator that doesn't want to share power with the main dictator anymore?

Wagner used to train both the army and the RSF, at the behest of the army/government. That ended before the current conflict.

the RSF is an amalgam of janjaweed and mercs, a paramilitary force meant to decentralize military power to stave off potential coups. they, and their boss don't give two shits for democracy. he's a warlord and the reason he rebelled was probably because Burhan was gradually trying to weaken him and absorb the RSF into the regular army to prevent them being a threat.

It's internal struggle for power between Junta factions due to shifts in powerbalance caused by the discovery of precious minerals.

A giant vein of gold got discovered across the Sahara, from Mali to Sudan.
RSF is a paramilitary faction of Sudanese junta that was based in the region where a lot of those gold was discovered - they smuggled a lot of it to UAE and got rich in process (they also fought for Haftar alongside Wagner in Lybia).

This won't be a Syria-tier conflict simply because the only people in Sudan who support the RSF are RSF members. There are no real social factors at play beyond them wanting to protect their status. They'll eventually be whittled down to nothing by the Army, even if it takes some time to hunt them all down.

I have a few Sudanese friends who used to live in the capital. They fled from there in the 3rd day of the action after a couple rockets fell into the building nextdoor. They're in a distant eastern town where my friend studied medicine. His younger sister was also a medicine student in the capital (Khartoum's university is widely regarded as the best medical school in MENA). His sister is really cute so I was worried sick for them, but they seem fine now.

Another story is that his sister has been stuck in her 2nd year as med student in Khartoum's university for the past 4 years due to the social instability that followed Omar al-Bashir's ouster. Now there's no end in sight for her education except to try to transfer to some other school in Egypt or some other MENA country. Her older brother also can't do his housemanship because his grad certifications weren't stamped when the war broke out.
