The mag pouches from the war were actually pretty decent , two separated pouches that held 6 mags , so add a chest rig and you’ve got 9 mags which is a significantly bigger amount then what usual soldiers carry now , also it ways 10 pounds but so what the ak weighs 9 and a half , just to go further into the larp Id probably use a hi power made during the war with 15 round Springfield mags to get modern handgun levels of capacity , the stg 44 though I’d load to 24 rounds since any more could frick up the mags (they loaded them to 25 at max in the field look it up )
I mean insurgents have been using them in syria and other places for years, it's hardly the best option today but it's still an automatic rifle. Your biggest issue is going to be reliability, even back in 1945, STGs were finnicky and had short operating lives.

Why does this meme still persist? The fact that the OkW was intent on replacing the K98k in early 1944 with the StG44 means that they were more than reliable enough to be considered for replacing the standard service rifle across the entire Wehrmacht. I posted some reliability trials done by the WaA in a PSA StG thread a week ago and will post them here if the thread is still up when I get home.

The reliability issues were due to the mags , the guns can shut down on you if you load more then 25 rounds , don’t know why probably just a shity rushed mag design , so generally I’d suggest loading them to 24 rounds and only firing in bursts in full auto to conserve ammo
they used them in the Syrian war because that's where a lot of them ended up.

unless it was a problem with the feed lips it is probably a matter of having a shitty spring which is an issue with any magazine where the manufacturer is cutting corners.

Its fine in the sense that its a select fire rifle better than nothing, but thats not saying much. At least an MP40 firing 9mm rounds would be rather easy to feed given that is still floating around all over.

It's perfectly serviceable, but you're going to have some drawbacks from the dated design. For instance, not a lot of optic or accessory options and it's probably not the most accurate thing in the world. For home defense it's more than sufficient, assuming you're worried about owning one for personal use.
