half and half. You learn things when someone feels like sharing some of their knowledge. The vast majority of things Ive learned are by doing something wrong, getting yelled at then hope I dont do that again. its more exhausting than any of the physical aspects of the job

I just think you are just a complete loser OP. I've been in my trade, residential tree care and forestry, since I was 5 and used it to fund my nerd shit as a kid. My first paycheck was a copy of Pokemon Red. Never played sports, was and still am awkward and asocial as frick. Add in the fact that I have anxiety which leads to limited self confidence, I'm no chad or alpha.
But I do my fricking trade, I listen to both the new guy and the grey beard, and I have high expectations of myself and my crew. That has allowed me to work my trade in some capacity for over 23 years. That mentality is why after leaving because I thought my trade was destroying my body; I was able to make one phone call after 2.5 years and get back on a crew as a foreman.

I've seen all kinds at all ages start doing this job, or even go back to it after retirement from a corporate job. Nerds can be built up to high skill positions where frick ups can cost tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars, in under a year. They just need to want it.
