The reason it reached the internet was the guy that saw it and reported it was ignored by the brass for months before finally going public.
The guys that did it should have been arrested and tried but the brass was more worried about pretending there wasn't a problem than dealing with it.

SASR have been fricked for the last 30 years, there was a ton of shit swept under the rug in Somalia in 1993-1994 when SASR were hunting war criminals. Multiple instances of torturing detainees and frickwit behaviour like abusing the locals.
There was a very deadly helicopter crash in 1996 which killed 18 people and gave a number of NCOs in the Regiment PTSD. This resurfaced in Timor in 1999 when SASR went apeshit on the pro-indonesian militias. Two SASR guys were wounded in one of their first few contacts and the enemy combatants were killed, but on autopsy the combatants were magdumped in the face by multiple people whilst on the ground and the Patrol Commander was desecrating their corpses screaming and going nuts.
SASR were the only guys in Afghanistan for the first few years and they realised they could basically do whatever they liked and things got worse and worse until you had SASR operators straight up executing every detainee they suspected of being anti-coalition militia. Dozens upon dozens of instances of civilians shot by mistake, ANA and ANP killed in friendly fire incidents, and shit like SASR killing everybody on a farm after landing because one of them shot a civilian and they just killed everyone to remove the witnesses.
