I feel February will be the better dumping month in the SW this season. Typically it is the snowiest month anyways, but usually every year or every other year we see a good 3-6ft snowstorm right around New Years. The jetstreams were a little too far south or too far north until recently.
MN winter going BAD. December had a single day of measurable snow on the ground here in the twin cities. Have had all my xc ski races cancelled so far and right now the rest of the January races aren't super hopeful. Even the man made stuff has been pretty depressing as it's barely been cold enough for them to make snow and what they do get out is slush the next day. Plus the lakes haven't froze so can't even ice fish.

just got back from boarding at kirkwood. been going up every week since the runs open. was fun but had some spectacular wipeouts due to icy hard pack and skill issues. really working on carving but as soon as im on top of that edge i either skid out or i try to shift into the turn and catch my edge. hurts like a b***h. rang my bell a few times this season. thank god for protective gear. cant believe ive never done this sport. i used to hate winter and now i love it. i havent been this passionate about something in a really long time.
oh and my gear came in. been working with borrowed stuff and milsurp shit but looking forward to the qol upgrade now that i have snowboard specific stuff. considering getting a new board since the one im using is a really basic model for 09 or something and im starting to notice little things that i think might be bad equipment instead of only my shitty skills (randomly digging into crud and bucking, no edge hold, mad chatter at even moderate speed on hard pack)

a lot of people write off DC/Volcom/Vans for snowsports but in general they have very reasonably priced and not totally shit gear. theyre miles and miles better than a lot of big box brands like swissgear or any crap you get from facebook ads.
i noticed volcom actually has some fairly decent designs and specs. a lot of the popular companies absolutely rook people with garbage for super high prices. low tier burton shit is a joke. im sure their top line is good.

top-line burton will always be good, for $400+ it better be, but i got a volcom jacket with full waterproofing/windproofing with the "amenities" (RFID pass sleeve zipper, goggle pocket, etc) for around $140.

Skiing / snowboarding is one of those things where people THINK they want to play in powder so they spend 2 grand on gear, hit the bunny slope once, bruise their ass and say frick it and liquidate their brand new gear on fleabay for pennies.
I got a $500 board for sixty bucks that looks like someone rode the lift once, crashed getting off and carried the board down to the lodge.

its montecs fast fashion line, so its cheap but very low quality. if youre learning and just want to get on the mountain its fine, but if youre intermediate and above it is not good. theyre not waterproof and not windproof at all and if you ride hard they probably last half a season.

today and I tested it and it's definitely waterproof. Cant speak for the windproof but the construction quality overall also seems pretty decent for the price.

it doesnt really snow where I live in PNW more than 1 day a year and i lack the car to drive to snowy hills so I usually just go hiking on rainy days to waterfalls or up hills and through forests, done alot of that with my family this year
I'm going skiing soon and need to get clothes for temps in the 20s. If I'm going skiing Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, can I just get two base layers, one mid layer, and a shell and just let the first base layer dry before wearing again on Thursday? Or is that going to be a problem? Same thing for pants. Just two base layers to wear under a pair of snow pants?

What's the underwear situation? Do I wear briefs under the base layer? And how many pairs of base layers do I need for three days of skiing? Two tops and two bottoms?
i usually go normal underwear + long johns unless youre skiing in temps above 35f. i have dakine lightweight long johns that aren't super insulating like normal wool johns but they let me layer how i feel is necessary while knowing im not going to freeze down there.
Depends on how warm or cold you get. I usually just wear a medium insulated jacket with a tshirt under it and medium or light insulation pants with a pair of long johns. I run hot though.
Get a set of merino wool base layer, wool doesn't need washing and doesn't smell, just let it air over night. Get a midlayer in the form of a fleece jacket. Shell jacket on top, or even a light insulated one if that's your thing. I'd recommend lightly insulated pants, bib if possible.
Shell jackets and pants are seldom needed by resort skiiers ever unless you hike a bunch. A shell jacket is nice though and as long as you layer up if you easily get cold it's fine. Legs are harder to keep warm which is why I would recommend a slightly insulated pair compared to shell, I made the change and it's super comfy.
Get a pair of merino wool ski socks, again they dry fast overnight and won't smell. Get either a balaclava or a buff in merino wool as well, will help you keeping your face warm. Get a good pair of gloves, if you are on the colder side mittens are superior to finger gloves. A merino wool liner will help you keep even warmer.

Started this season plus im a relatively old man. 5 days on the slopes so far. Progression has been quick but im really pushing myself to get into solid intermediate territory so pain is just gonna come with the territory for a while. If i can consistently hit proper carves and cruise blues ill back off a bit.

If you mean bibs the maid advantage for me is that it's much harder for snow to get into your clothes compared to normal pants. When i wear normal ski pants its easy for snow to get in your ass but bibs get around this for the most part. They also give you more warmth as your chest is covered
ive never going skiing before but i moved to a new town and i wanna try out the nearby slope before school starts. what do i need to know as a beginner? id take the lessons but its way more expensive than i can comfortably do right now
i guess im just not sure what they could teach me for 200/hr that i wouldnt be able to get a feel for myself. i understand the basic stuff, im just not really sure how much more effective a lesson would be since ill be practicing the same motions anyway.
i know i sound totally arrogant and im aware of the risk of hurting myself, but it just doesnt seem like id get a ton out of a guide
you should take a lesson, even the simple things that go around skiing like getting on to a lift are VERY intimidating if you haven't done it before even assuming you are a coordinated individual. there is a steep skill wall to get to the point of slipping down the hill and from there you can learn at your own pace but if you are literally starting from nothing it's going to be rough without some form of intro. even once you know how to ski it doesn't hurt to take a lesson every year or two as there's so many small details that you won't notice on your own and need someone to point out what stupid technique you've developed as a work around.
if you want no lesson though it's very possible, just go to the kids hill and start with duck walking your way to the top and pizza sliding your way to the bottom. you'll fall a ton and probably run over a kid at least once but you saved money.
depending on the layout of your mountain you could just go all in on being a park/pipetroony and just hike up the hill after hours. that's what i did last season with snowskating and by the end up the year i was comfortably riding double blacks.
it's kind of an autistic away to do things but it do be cheap.

As I was standing on the edge of the slope looking down, trying to figure out which way to go without killing myself, this little girl just bombed past me and took off downhill like she was chasing the ice cream truck.
If you've never been on skis, you very much need someone to show you what to do. Downhill skiing is a sport for rich people. Everything about it is expensive.

The skiing all went pretty well all things considered. Even though it was a blackout day at stowe, the wind and rain forecast kept the people count down. It was limited to one lift for half the day and I was soaked to my bone by 3 pm when leaving but was good fun for my first of the season
Glad to hear. Dont be afraid to trust your gear but always plan for a bit extra. Also keep you electronics and a personal water supply in your sleeping bag (if its synthetic)
Any tips for brake width on ski bindings? Some things I've read said it should be as close as possible while others say it should be ~15mm greater than the ski width. Skis in question are 98mm, so I'm not sure if I should go with 100, 110, or 120.

it's by far the most fun i've ever had riding pow. for uphilling it's really nice just to walk up the mountain in normal shoes instead of having to deal with at gear or a split. way lighter than a snowboard as well. you also just feel really cool charging down the mountain on a skateboard doing runs everyone else needs to be strapped to ride. i thought i'd only use it for skate tricks and park but it made the whole mountain feel big again.
I was at breck yesterday and for some reason my Oakley lenses kept fogging up in between the two layers so there wasnt even a way for me to wipe it away. This (and the fact the lenses arent magnetecly swappable) is making me want to get some new ones but seems like the 'nice' brands arent all that worth it. ive been doing it for years. Ive only had these low light lenses since towards the end of last season but never once had the problem with the daylight ones they originally came with. On Sunday i tried a few times using the hand blow driers in bathrooms to fully defog them for a few minutes but they would go back to fogged pretty much right away. how crazy cheap are we talking about (and where)? Im pretty much unwilling to buy another pair of goggles that dont have the magnets as my friends that have mag swap ones seems way way more convenient than the fiddling i have to currently do.
I have seen that Glade has some goggles that automatically changes tint as the weather changes which seems interesting, although they also have multiple sets of lenses and are non magnetic so seems like the tint change must not be that significant.
I just dropped a large buck for an arcteryx Beta AR. I keep getting sick to my stomach but everytime I look around for a comparable jacket with the same features (same level of goretex, recco, helmet hood) its only +-$100 difference. Which in that case I think the arc trumps all in terms of fit/colors (ie norrona is hideous)

My winter PrepHole consists of hiking, hunting, campfire cooking, and ice skating, so I rock a Stormy Kromer mackinaw wool jacket. I love that thing. It's extremely versatile. The only thing it's not amazing at is being wind resistant, but it's fine unless you're going downhill skiing or something.
This weekend I managed to get 3 days in and I can now link carves (on blues, still lose my tail like a b***h on steeps), ride powder, trees, and small jumps. Pretty frickin stoked tbh. Never really thought of myself as a tricks guy, mostly just want to get really nimble effortless and fast, but I really see the appeal now. Hoping the snow gets a bit colder but a 40 degree day fricking around in cement shirtless is still fun to me. Love this small I been going to too. Frick disneyland tier crowds
Anyone here use a camera when they board? Which one and how do you keep it from going flying? I was looking at that insta360 because framing seems nice but I cant tell if you can get still with it and holding a stick as you board seems annoying and also if it goes flying you have to go hike around the piste like a dick.
I was also surprised to find that they arent winterized and suffer battery issues in cold weather which is just stupid
I've used my Yi action camera once or twice, i just put one of the mounts on my helmet and also used a selfie stick. 360 cams are way better but if you want to actually be visible in the video you dont really have a choice but to hold a stick. To help avoid the losing the stick thing make sure it has a wrist strap.

You'll see a lot of ski town locals ski alone on their day off during the weekdays.
Definitely get a lesson or 2, your enjoyment of the sport is directly tied to your fundamentals, and you'll get proper feedback from an instructor to set you on the right path to get better before you get into some stupid habits.

I'm 30 and pretty much none my friends dont ride or ski. I've been riding alone every season for 2 decades excluding a few days here and there. You should for sure take a lesson.
i adore skiing, but im deathly afraid of the lifts. how the frick do i get over this? i repeat the same lines to myself over and over but they never make me feel any better. "its an engineering marvel", "nobody ever gets hurt on these", etc. the moment i have to ride one im just petrified with fear the entire time
Have you ever ridden a lift? Sounds like you need to have a candid discussion with a good instructor. They can slow them down to make it easier to get on and off, they do it all the time for people, it’s no big deal. An instructor could communicate that to the operators; it’s not much but every little thing to make it less scary helps.
Or show up to the lift late in the day when the crowds have faded and tell the liftee you’re scared as hell of the lift and want to get over it. Hand them a six pack and they’ll love you. Even without a six pack they will help you, albeit not as enthusiastically
Elaborate on your fear. Are you worried somehow the lift will snap and you will fall? This will not happen, you just need to force yourself to ride them and confront your fear. If it is something like getting stuck on a lift for a period of time, make sure you always wear warm gear and keep some food and water on you. It happens where people get stuck for an hour or two rarely but theyll get you down so you will be fine. If it is something else (like heights/falling off) you can similarly work on facing those fears either with the lifts themselves or some other method of fear of heights.
the lifts at my usual spot are good about slowing it down with naught but a quick gesture, but thats not so much my issue. the chairs themselves are relatively small and theres no bar or handle or anything.
ive always struggled with heights but repeat exposure is usually enough to somewhat ease my nerves, but not with the lifts. the irregular and uncontrollable movement just doesnt sit well with me at all and i feel like im hyper-aware of every single bump and shift. it doesnt help that when i was younger i had my hood get snagged on one of the chairs and i got dragged up and away some distance. it wasnt very far but i can hardly remember feeling more afraid than in that moment

Does the hill you ski at only have one lift? 99% of the lift these days have safety bars you can pull down and most 4+ lift have footrests.
theres plenty of lifts, about half a dozen i think, but none of them have anything like that. theyre all just open air, no bars, nothing. it makes me envious of the bunny since that just has a nice and comfortable conveyer tube

Coreshotted my board emergency braking a pile of rocks that I was about to send without being able to see what was behind it. Turns out it was more rocks. Also wiley coyoted into a different boulder. Last run of the day decided to get really nuts and do a steep ass technical run that was basically a rock field. Way beyond my skill level. Basically was jump turning my board at one point just to keep myself from dying. Scary af but about 40% went pretty well. Felt like I ran a half marathon afterwards. I god damn love obstacles so much I just wish it didnt mean destroying hundreds of dollars of equipment
guys, i sharpened my ski edges recently using a bevel guide... however since I'm moronic I initially pressed the edge guide up to the side bevel and ground, essentially grinding the bottom of the ski... How much has this fricked my base bevel angle do you think, do I need to fix the abse edge or if I do it correctly now it should be fine?
maybe a touch of the laminate, but I can always fill in with the candles or get a base grind if thats the case, no? I'm more worried about if i would have fricked my base bevel. I will get a full service on them soon, but I am going skiing next week and need a temp solution
East Coast snowboarder headed to Breck and keystone for the first time in a couple of weeks. I ride all of the mountain but wouldn't consider myself an expert - I've been boarding for 5 years now. Any tips? Anything that's a must-do or something to avoid?

just got back from boarding at kirkwood. been going up every week since the runs open. was fun but had some spectacular wipeouts due to icy hard pack and skill issues. really working on carving but as soon as im on top of that edge i either skid out or i try to shift into the turn and catch my edge. hurts like a b***h. rang my bell a few times this season. thank god for protective gear. cant believe ive never done this sport. i used to hate winter and now i love it. i havent been this passionate about something in a really long time.
oh and my gear came in. been working with borrowed stuff and milsurp shit but looking forward to the qol upgrade now that i have snowboard specific stuff. considering getting a new board since the one im using is a really basic model for 09 or something and im starting to notice little things that i think might be bad equipment instead of only my shitty skills (randomly digging into crud and bucking, no edge hold, mad chatter at even moderate speed on hard pack)

a lot of people write off DC/Volcom/Vans for snowsports but in general they have very reasonably priced and not totally shit gear. theyre miles and miles better than a lot of big box brands like swissgear or any crap you get from facebook ads.
i noticed volcom actually has some fairly decent designs and specs. a lot of the popular companies absolutely rook people with garbage for super high prices. low tier burton shit is a joke. im sure their top line is good.
top-line burton will always be good, for $400+ it better be, but i got a volcom jacket with full waterproofing/windproofing with the "amenities" (RFID pass sleeve zipper, goggle pocket, etc) for around $140.

Skiing / snowboarding is one of those things where people THINK they want to play in powder so they spend 2 grand on gear, hit the bunny slope once, bruise their ass and say frick it and liquidate their brand new gear on fleabay for pennies.
I got a $500 board for sixty bucks that looks like someone rode the lift once, crashed getting off and carried the board down to the lodge.

today and I tested it and it's definitely waterproof. Cant speak for the windproof but the construction quality overall also seems pretty decent for the price.

it doesnt really snow where I live in PNW more than 1 day a year and i lack the car to drive to snowy hills so I usually just go hiking on rainy days to waterfalls or up hills and through forests, done alot of that with my family this year
I'm going skiing soon and need to get clothes for temps in the 20s. If I'm going skiing Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, can I just get two base layers, one mid layer, and a shell and just let the first base layer dry before wearing again on Thursday? Or is that going to be a problem? Same thing for pants. Just two base layers to wear under a pair of snow pants?

i usually go normal underwear + long johns unless youre skiing in temps above 35f. i have dakine lightweight long johns that aren't super insulating like normal wool johns but they let me layer how i feel is necessary while knowing im not going to freeze down there.

Depends on how warm or cold you get. I usually just wear a medium insulated jacket with a tshirt under it and medium or light insulation pants with a pair of long johns. I run hot though.
You just need one of everything really.
Get a set of merino wool base layer, wool doesn't need washing and doesn't smell, just let it air over night. Get a midlayer in the form of a fleece jacket. Shell jacket on top, or even a light insulated one if that's your thing. I'd recommend lightly insulated pants, bib if possible.
Shell jackets and pants are seldom needed by resort skiiers ever unless you hike a bunch. A shell jacket is nice though and as long as you layer up if you easily get cold it's fine. Legs are harder to keep warm which is why I would recommend a slightly insulated pair compared to shell, I made the change and it's super comfy.
Get a pair of merino wool ski socks, again they dry fast overnight and won't smell. Get either a balaclava or a buff in merino wool as well, will help you keeping your face warm. Get a good pair of gloves, if you are on the colder side mittens are superior to finger gloves. A merino wool liner will help you keep even warmer.

Progression has been quick but im really pushing myself to get into solid intermediate territory so pain is just gonna come with the territory for a while. If you mean bibs the maid advantage for me is that it's much harder for snow to get into your clothes compared to normal pants. When i wear normal ski pants its easy for snow to get in your ass but bibs get around this for the most part. They also give you more warmth as your chest is covered

ive never going skiing before but i moved to a new town and i wanna try out the nearby slope before school starts. what do i need to know as a beginner? id take the lessons but its way more expensive than i can comfortably do right now
You gotta take at least 1 lesson. You need to learn how to turn and stop, or else you are going to injure yourself.
i guess im just not sure what they could teach me for 200/hr that i wouldnt be able to get a feel for myself. i understand the basic stuff, im just not really sure how much more effective a lesson would be since ill be practicing the same motions anyway.
i know i sound totally arrogant and im aware of the risk of hurting myself, but it just doesnt seem like id get a ton out of a guide
you should take a lesson, even the simple things that go around skiing like getting on to a lift are VERY intimidating if you haven't done it before even assuming you are a coordinated individual. there is a steep skill wall to get to the point of slipping down the hill and from there you can learn at your own pace but if you are literally starting from nothing it's going to be rough without some form of intro. even once you know how to ski it doesn't hurt to take a lesson every year or two as there's so many small details that you won't notice on your own and need someone to point out what stupid technique you've developed as a work around.
if you want no lesson though it's very possible, just go to the kids hill and start with duck walking your way to the top and pizza sliding your way to the bottom. you'll fall a ton and probably run over a kid at least once but you saved money.
im pretty athletic, but youre right. i need a new hobby but i just cant rationalize spending so much right now. it fricking sucks
depending on the layout of your mountain you could just go all in on being a park/pipetroony and just hike up the hill after hours. that's what i did last season with snowskating and by the end up the year i was comfortably riding double blacks.

If you've never been on skis, you very much need someone to show you what to do. Downhill skiing is a sport for rich people. Everything about it is expensive.

The skiing all went pretty well all things considered. Even though it was a blackout day at stowe, the wind and rain forecast kept the people count down. It was limited to one lift for half the day and I was soaked to my bone by 3 pm when leaving but was good fun for my first of the season

Any tips for brake width on ski bindings? Some things I've read said it should be as close as possible while others say it should be ~15mm greater than the ski width. Skis in question are 98mm, so I'm not sure if I should go with 100, 110, or 120.

it's by far the most fun i've ever had riding pow. for uphilling it's really nice just to walk up the mountain in normal shoes instead of having to deal with at gear or a split. way lighter than a snowboard as well. you also just feel really cool charging down the mountain on a skateboard doing runs everyone else needs to be strapped to ride. i thought i'd only use it for skate tricks and park but it made the whole mountain feel big again.
I was at breck yesterday and for some reason my Oakley lenses kept fogging up in between the two layers so there wasnt even a way for me to wipe it away. This (and the fact the lenses arent magnetecly swappable) is making me want to get some new ones but seems like the 'nice' brands arent all that worth it. ive been doing it for years. Ive only had these low light lenses since towards the end of last season but never once had the problem with the daylight ones they originally came with. On Sunday i tried a few times using the hand blow driers in bathrooms to fully defog them for a few minutes but they would go back to fogged pretty much right away. Maybe ill try getting some silicate baggies to keep in my goggles case from now on.

My winter PrepHole consists of hiking, hunting, campfire cooking, and ice skating, so I rock a Stormy Kromer mackinaw wool jacket. I love that thing. It's extremely versatile. The only thing it's not amazing at is being wind resistant, but it's fine unless you're going downhill skiing or something.

This weekend I managed to get 3 days in and I can now link carves (on blues, still lose my tail like a b***h on steeps), ride powder, trees, and small jumps. Pretty frickin stoked tbh. Never really thought of myself as a tricks guy, mostly just want to get really nimble effortless and fast, but I really see the appeal now. Anyone here use a camera when they board? Which one and how do you keep it from going flying? I was looking at that insta360 because framing seems nice but I cant tell if you can get still with it and holding a stick as you board seems annoying and also if it goes flying you have to go hike around the piste like a dick.
I was also surprised to find that they arent winterized and suffer battery issues in cold weather which is just stupid
I've used my Yi action camera once or twice, i just put one of the mounts on my helmet and also used a selfie stick. 360 cams are way better but if you want to actually be visible in the video you dont really have a choice but to hold a stick. To help avoid the losing the stick thing make sure it has a wrist strap.

You'll see a lot of ski town locals ski alone on their day off during the weekdays.
Definitely get a lesson or 2, your enjoyment of the sport is directly tied to your fundamentals, and you'll get proper feedback from an instructor to set you on the right path to get better before you get into some stupid habits.

"its an engineering marvel", "nobody ever gets hurt on these", etc. the moment i have to ride one im just petrified with fear the entire time

Have you ever ridden a lift? Sounds like you need to have a candid discussion with a good instructor. They can slow them down to make it easier to get on and off, they do it all the time for people, it’s no big deal. An instructor could communicate that to the operators; it’s not much but every little thing to make it less scary helps.
Or show up to the lift late in the day when the crowds have faded and tell the liftee you’re scared as hell of the lift and want to get over it. Hand them a six pack and they’ll love you. Even without a six pack they will help you, albeit not as enthusiastically
Elaborate on your fear. Are you worried somehow the lift will snap and you will fall? This will not happen, you just need to force yourself to ride them and confront your fear. If it is something like getting stuck on a lift for a period of time, make sure you always wear warm gear and keep some food and water on you. It happens where people get stuck for an hour or two rarely but theyll get you down so you will be fine. If it is something else (like heights/falling off) you can similarly work on facing those fears either with the lifts themselves or some other method of fear of heights.
the lifts at my usual spot are good about slowing it down with naught but a quick gesture, but thats not so much my issue. the chairs themselves are relatively small and theres no bar or handle or anything.
ive always struggled with heights but repeat exposure is usually enough to somewhat ease my nerves, but not with the lifts. the irregular and uncontrollable movement just doesnt sit well with me at all and i feel like im hyper-aware of every single bump and shift. it doesnt help that when i was younger i had my hood get snagged on one of the chairs and i got dragged up and away some distance. it wasnt very far but i can hardly remember feeling more afraid than in that moment

Does the hill you ski at only have one lift? 99% of the lift these days have safety bars you can pull down and most 4+ lift have footrests.
theres plenty of lifts, about half a dozen i think, but none of them have anything like that. theyre all just open air, no bars, nothing. it makes me envious of the bunny since that just has a nice and comfortable conveyer tube

challenging day but had some fun. absolutely mogul city on the runs but a lot of untouched cement between the trees that was pretty cool as long as you kept the board up. snow giving way to rain and mist is not ideal when you dont already know the terrain
couple observations from last weekend:
1. why do so many indians ski now? and why the frick do they feel the need to literally stand in the middle of the fricking piste at choke points and wiener around like theyre waiting for a bus?
2. i keep seeing flecktarn ski jackets and they dont look milsurp. did PrepHoles baby go normie? id understand if this was eu but this is america for gods sake

Coreshotted my board emergency braking a pile of rocks that I was about to send without being able to see what was behind it. Turns out it was more rocks. Also wiley coyoted into a different boulder. Last run of the day decided to get really nuts and do a steep ass technical run that was basically a rock field. Way beyond my skill level. Basically was jump turning my board at one point just to keep myself from dying. Scary af but about 40% went pretty well. Felt like I ran a half marathon afterwards. I god damn love obstacles so much I just wish it didnt mean destroying hundreds of dollars of equipment

guys, i sharpened my ski edges recently using a bevel guide... however since I'm moronic I initially pressed the edge guide up to the side bevel and ground, essentially grinding the bottom of the ski... How much has this fricked my base bevel angle do you think, do I need to fix the abse edge or if I do it correctly now it should be fine?
Did you grind off the wax or the laminate itself?
maybe a touch of the laminate, but I can always fill in with the candles or get a base grind if thats the case, no? I'm more worried about if i would have fricked my base bevel. I will get a full service on them soon, but I am going skiing next week and need a temp solution
Yeah I'd just wax it up and send since they're getting serviced anyway. May want to keep an eye on it depending on terrain and how hard you ski.

East Coast snowboarder headed to Breck and keystone for the first time in a couple of weeks. I ride all of the mountain but wouldn't consider myself an expert - I've been boarding for 5 years now. Any tips? Anything that's a must-do or something to avoid?
