SKS

Fellas, i'm looking at an SKS for a truck gun and my local gun store has a few in stock of varying quality.
1) What are some red flags to look out for on used SKS's? and
2) Is there another sub 1k USD truck gun that's a strict upgrade to a cool old soviet/chinese milsurp blaster?

If you don't live around Black folk what's even the point of a truck gun in the first place? You need that extra fire power for fricking Chinese people? Lmao

I'd get a Rossi R92 levergun in .357 and compliment it with a 4" revolver.

You'd be a hillbilly rolling like a cowboy.

SKS's are fun, but they're crap. Too long and heavy for a truck gun.

Shorty is the Norinco "paratrooper" model. My suggestion for a truck gun.
            >screw a coffee can to the passenger foot well floor board with sheet metal screws
            >mind any wires or brake lines underneath
            >line bottom of can with indoor/outdoor carpet circle and shoe goo
            >position can so butt stock is aligned with tunnel and seat nook
            >drive with frown and smile combined because you're you
            >shoot coyotes on sight
            >wear thier skins
            >obey all game and fish laws
You are now pretty fricking cool.

SKS is a pretty shitty choice for a truck gun. There are many better options in just about every regard.

              Paratrooper models are based.

Not so Bro. I had a 1954 Tula Arsenal matching # SKS I snarfed for $135 OTD back in early 90s,(frick you, I'm a Geezer. Get OFF my LAWN!).

It was a good weapon, but even with my F-150 it was a bit much to stick in a pocket behind the seat.
And I don't live in a region where window racks and cowboy hats are commonplace.

    >truck gun
    >sks
I was going to ask why you would want a gun to store inside the cab of your truck that has a long receiver, long barrel, junk options for a folding stock. Then I realized you wanted a truck gun so you are already a moron so pick whatever moron shit you want. Enjoy trying to actually get it out from behind your seat and shouldering it in the cab of your truck.

do people actually think their garbage is worth that much? these guns are worth $100-$200 at most, but probably should be just given away or thrown out.

You can put together a solid ar15 for $300-$400. I assembled a crummy one for $250. Not sure if anyone else suggested this, I'm not reading the thread.

An SKS is one of the worst ways to go for a vehicle weapon. But at least you're looking toward the right producers of weapons for a vehicle gun.. The Russians and other Slavs put a lot of work into making weapons to fight from vehicles and to fight off ambush from dismount. Hence the wide selection of shorter AK's with folding stocks. The 7.62X39 round responds well to shorter barrels compared to any NATO round. From the shape of the case, being so short for a rifle round, that massive primer and .30 caliber, a shorter barrel doesn't cost you as much energy compared to 5.56 or even 7.62X51. Now here's how it works: You need a good sling for those folding stock 10" AK's. You can fire them from the vehicle fairly well. One handed while still steering or with both if fighting from inside while folded. The sling comes in as you fight your way out of the vehicle. You push the weapon out using the tension of the sling on you to help stabilize your aim. The second you get a chance you slap the stock into place and fight normally. Your rate of fire is faster, it's a snappy weapon that you can effectively engage multiple targets with quickly. If not suppressed, it's LOUD. Which can help demoralize the uninitiated. Used to be you could find something in the $700 range easily with about a 10" barrel and a nice folding brace... Not sure what something like that runs these days, but I've seen a few around in gun stores I go by in the $800 to $1200 range.

    >Buying what has at this point become a $1k collectors gun to be a gun intended for abuse when good modern rifles are easily half that price
You're fricking moronic, the reason SKS's were a meme for so long is because you could get one for like $80 and an extra $100 would get you 1400 rounds of ammo

Except for the pejoratives, and pricing being about $20-40 low, he's not wrong.

If you can get one for 400 usd or less sure why not otherwise just get a cheap psa AR.

        Also spot on.

My favorite are the Chinese since they're the lightest. Yugos are heavy af, Russians are still very hefty, but the Chinese used some lightening methods such as making the changing handle hollow and using lighter wood. That's a big consideration with the SKS since it's quite a heavy gun. The paratrooper models also lighten the package up a bit. 7.62x39 doesn't need a 21" barrel, 16" is the standard and you can go even lower than that and still get near full performance out of it. The shortened barrel would also do better if you're using it as a truck gun

As far as what to look for, just make sure it isn't beat up. No obvious wear or rust, barrel not shot out, and pop it open to make sure the internals look good. Some people never ever clean their gas blocks. I've bought a few where the gas blocks were full of soot. I guess some owners don't even know how to pop it open or don't realize that's a part you have to clean.
