Sister sent me this. She says she's always putting bleach down it cause hair (she thinks) is blocking the drain
Apart from being absolutely filthy and disgusting, is it worth going round and removing the drain cover and seeing what's up with it? Would it simply be just screwing the top cover off and then removing what is probably blocking it?
clean the trap and have her use regular sodium hydroxide drain cleaner (lye)
- Bleach isn't going to dissolve hair. You need a drain-clearing chemical. The clog might not be in the trap, so you'll need to pour it down the drain as well it the clog persists.
- That drain cover needs to be cleaned with scotch-brite to remove all the corrosion.
- The corrosion may be due to a leaky faucet, and if so, the cartridge should be replaced.
- The center part of the drain cover should be unscrewed and replaced with a mushroom-style hair strainer (picrel).
The chrome plating is done for. As the others say, the blockage needs to be removed properly, likely with the help of a drain snake at this point, but cleaning it will be somewhat futile. The exposed metal under the plating will always look bad, even when clean, and will corrode in a matter of days, likely overnight if she keeps pouring bleach down it. The drain ring and cap should be replaced with a new one once the blockage is removed.
Mix up some boiling hot saturated sodium hydroxide solution and blast it down there.
goes without saying don't get it in your eye.
Thanks for all the suggestions. Appreciate it
>pack your drain with lye (the crystal shit)
>make a nice little hill
>pour boiling water
>wait 10 minutes
>keep the faucet open for 1-2 minutes
>???
>profit
That shit will melt anything organic in the pipes
>pack your drain with lye (the crystal shit)
>pour boiling water
Don't do this. That will at minimum melt your plastic drain pipes and also spray caustic lye up out of the drain.
my favourite cover band
Checked but do not use more then one or two bottlecap worth of hydroxide in one go.
One more option, before you go hardcore with the chemicals and drainsnakes - pop the cover off, turn on the water and get about an inch or two puddle and use a regular toilet plunger. It can break loose a hell of a lot of crap and pull it out.
This anon is correct.
Plunging a toilet, sink, shower and tub ate the best you got. Theyre all the same plumbing, drains and traps.
Plunge that drain till it gurgles. Always works.
Try bleach and amonia
Buy a $35 drain snake, snake out the hair once a year, problem solved.
Don't pour random shit down the drain.
tell her to frick off
stop pouring chemicals down drains
even when you have the right one it rarely does any good anyway, just half arses it.
fill the basin with water and get fricking plungeing.
if its just one unit find the trap and remove to clean (remember not to clean it in the basin you are working on). if its lots of units find the stack and get an adapter for a pressure washer to blast it from behind.
if it was me i wouldn't help anyone who pours chemicals down drains. just not worth the risk.
