Should the bindle make a comeback?

Should the bindle make a comeback?

A bindle is a large kerchief or thin blanket filled with items tied to a stick or staff.

It strikes me that while the daypack backpack is ubiquitous, a bindle might make more sense.

Picture this: You want to go on an easy 8 mile hike. 4 miles one way. You want to bring a couple sandwiches, a couple beers, maybe a small pair of binoculars, and a bottle of water. Well, if you use a daypack there's every likelihood your whole back will get sweaty if it's hot out. Wouldn't a bindle make more sense? Not only would your back not get sweaty, you'd have a mini picnic blanket ready to sit on when you got to your destination.

I was PrepHole with a bindle last summer on a public trail (first mistake) and some zoomer came up behind me and tugged on my bindle
All my shit fell out & he took a picture of me with all my gear on the ground before walking away
    I just went home

Check out the roman version. The value of this is that you can take the weight off by leaning the staff forward and essentially putting the whole thing on the ground

As a carrying method this sucks if any weight is involved. I carry a couple cloth walmart bags in my satchel for groceries. I tie the handle onto my cane and put it over my right shoulder bringing the load right to my back. Figure it is better than strapping them onto my left wrist. Still twists my body and creates lasting pain. I finally switched to a normie backpack.

This might work for your daily food supplies like a european bread bag.

I like taking a walking stick, my leather gloves i use for chores ( cleaning yard, especially mesquite branches with thorns), and a short brush hook machete.
Popping through overgrown desert trails is harder carrying something with free hand.
Bindle is better if you stay on well maintained trails.

You won't ever carry it far away from the body like in your pic unless you're larping, because leverage and all that. It'll hang directly from your shoulder, turning it into a shitty backpack that uses up a hand.
The stick will kill your shoulder quickly and you'll hate it.

There is a reason people don't use this anymore.

Can I do this without the stick
Can you make a backpack by just tying cloth around your back

      Anonymous

      Yes, pretty easily actually.

Try getting a shemagh, opening it out fully into a square, pack your stuff together.
Fold over two opposite corners, tie with square knot.
Twist up other corners to improvise a sort of cord, tie those however you want, wherever you want it to sit.

I tend to use this for gathering small bits for the fire or gathering food when PrepHole

whats the benefit of it vs. a backpack?

    They don't make sense.
You've got a walking stick you can't walk with, and a swinging load that takes heaps of energy to carry.

I actually have a specific technique for this, I lay my army jacket out flat, fill it with things, roll the bottom up, turn it upsidown and tie the arms diagonally across my back.
Often I'll thread by belt through the arms of the army jacket to ratchet it down.
You can do this with a shirt under your jacket as well if you're really worried about dropping things.

If it's really cold and I need by jacket I'll go full strelet and belt around my waist and just stuff my jacket with everything while I wear it.

You can also put one pant leg inside the other to make a tube, tie/knot the bottom of the leg and ratchet it under your belt,. do a similar thing, but I don't bring spare pants.

Pro tip, get a belt with a Anglo style knotted buckle, you can ratchet these at any length and they don't break.
The military style canvas ones with a floating pin work fine as well.

Other options if you're really in a jam for carrying things include using a scarf/ sheet as a simple sling, tie a knot 3/4 down, fill it then twist it closed.

If you've got nothing you can use any piece of cloth as a pouch, fasten it with the discarded end of a screw top bottle, or a ring and a plug (as if it were a canteen).
You only need to get the corners for it to hold.

Socks can work as pouches if your pockets rip, put them through the pocket hole, knot them and put the knot under your belt.

If you have no belt you can rip a strip off the bottom of your shirt then twist it, this works well to reinforce a wire, cable or cord.

Results may vary, but this is like plan C.
Plan A is having a bag, plan B is making a bag.

I walk around campus with a bindle. I'm a bit autistic with the feeling of backpacks on my back. So far it's been working well. Great conversation starter too. I was feeling pretty hopeless as i don't get much attention from women but now i just bindle my way into pussy

Theres a reason people who don't have to make do with what they can cobble together from scrap don't use "bindles" and that's why they won't be coming back outside of role play.

Theres a reason people who don't have to make do with what they can cobble together from scrap don't use "bindles" and that's why they won't be coming back outside of role play.

it's because homeless people live where everything is paved now and stolen shopping cards work a lot better
Bindles are good when you have a relatively small amount of stuff to carry and want to set it down and pick it up often. You're not supposed to carry more than a can of soup or two, and a flask and your last pinch of tobacco. They're not a replacement for a backpack, just a more convenient way of carrying a few things than in your hands or pockets, that you can make with your handkerchief and a stick from the side of the road.
