This makes no sense, it assumes if you have $50k for a van and some tools, you can start your own plumbing company with zero experience. That’s not how it works.

You need to learn somehow, so you’re going to start at the bottom. I don’t understand this new millennial/zoomer bullshit where they expect to get the pay and position of a guy with 20 years of experience when they’re fricking 19 years old.

But anyway check out the unions around you. Become a union sparky and you will be making high $20s real early on and be at mid $30s within a few years. You only need basic tools to start and you’ll work your way up, then you can think about starting your own business if you want in the future.

The mexicans who tiled my kitchen floor pulled up in a civic and had all their gear stashed in the trunk. No one really needs a van or truck lol.

And it's not competitive at all, just don't be a crack head or alcoholic and come on time when you're scheduled to be at the job. That's pretty much the bar.

I have an old Crown Vic that could easily pull a trailer full of tools. You don't need a stupidly expensive work truck to haul.
I'm guessing you don't have too much experience, correct? Perhaps its just me, but as an independent contractor I wouldn't feel comfortable doing shitty work and/or learning off of actual jobs. I already supply services to the public with my current job and I fricking hate making mistake, both for my sake and theirs. Know what you're getting into.

Trades are good anon. Even better if you're exmil but that's not a requirement. Just pick your trade wisely. There's probably 30 million mexican carpenters doing residential work for less than federal minimum, for instance. But plumbers or millwrights, for example, might have less competition.

yeah as others have said that post is basically delusional. trades still make good money because there's still a shortage of tradesmen. don't expect this to last forever, because ultimately the market will come back to an equilibrium and you'll be right there with all the newbie tradies who skipped out on college. The best way to do it would be to get an apprenticeship or low tier job now, work there for a while and use it as a partial career while saving for college in the future. this way, when the trades come back down to reasonable rates in 5-10 years and/or you're tired of busting your ass in a physical job you can go get a bachelor's and have more options while still being in a solid financial situation. there's also basically no competition right now so there's lots of opportunities for younger guys.
    t. worked as a machinist for a few years and am now back in school for mechanical engineering. gonna be debt free by the time I'm out as well and will have lots more access to lots more jobs thanks to my work experience

Trades have another good 20-25 years before we start hitting a hard wall and end up super saturated with too many tradesman and not enough work.

Because there is no shortcut to experience the least productive will mostly be the noobist, highly motivated enthusiasts being the exceptions.

Yeah I mean just look at the housing issues a lot of urban areas are facing. There's a reason people are being priced out of cities; construction is going to be pretty stable for at least a few more years. The only real troublesome thing is rising interest rates on loans, that may price out some developers, especially if they're cash-poor and trying to finance mega projects.

Weird i became a machinist after college. One of the easiest jobs I have ever had in my life, click some bullshit in mastercam, read through gcode look for errors, simulate setup machine (just a big ass 3d printer ) feed hold, distance to go hopefully I typed in the Z heights perfectly then make 10-20 repeat

There is no arguing with Cindy over deadlines, no data entry, no dealing with women management who don’t know how to manage because they’re like 21 and fresh out of college

    >have to start as the low man on the totem pole
this is true for everything in life for everyone, unless your dad is a billionaire or something.

    >shortage of tradesmen

    no such thing
It's just that wages haven't budged for most of em in 20 years so less people are willing to work for 20 bucks an hour

The money sucks. And the people running their own operation have no quality of life because they’re running support and doing office work. I took the no college pill but at this point I regret it. Any job that puts you comfortable ahead of COL requires a degree. If you’re 18 and don’t have to go into debt for college you should go and get your degree now rather than later. If you’re dumb the trades are very forgiving, if you’re smart but not desperate you’re better off working something white collar

Yes, you pay your dues. The money is better when you're independent but the bullshit isn't

It took me until my 30s to realize this… don’t follow all the red tape.

Those Mexicans standing outside Home Depot, you think those frickers are licensed, bonded, insured, journeyman electricians or do you think they just went out and fricking did it….

There are over 30 millon illegals in Southern California probably more, code enforcement isn’t checking papers and license numbers

Go shop lift a Milwaukee drill and splice some Rolex in a junction box that isn’t anywhere near code and just fricking do it and you’ll get paid because you speak English

The problem is you’re fighting in capitalism with your hands handcuffed by the State because you’re law abiding so hector and his homies in the covic get all the job’s because they’re cheaper because they don’t pay their taxes and all their tools are stolen

You can’t do that because why? Because your skin is white frick that do what they do get your money

America wants to be a third world then let it

Boomers are not the low hanging fruit for getting in to the trades since they are notoriously shitty with their standards. Go for the "will hire 'tards" jobs. For them they test if you can lift the bare minimum*, answer genuine basic common knowledge stuff, and then give you the super secret trial of giving you a time limited job to do by yourself or with a group of possible newbies after a little while of working.

*note: Always multiply the amount they expect you to move by 3 since that is the real number of average weight most people will be moving in the actual job.

Getting into trades the legit way is a 10 year long train of bullshit because boomers lobbied for moron levels of regulation to strangle any competition in the cradle. In many places if you follow the letter of the regs you can't even become a plumber etc without the current area boomers permission because you have to work for him for whatever ridiculous 1980s wage he's willing to pay you for 3+ years before being given the privilege of taking a test for a beginner license.
