Akshually, the AK was quite a revolutionary rifle. It brought select fire capability, large detachable box magazines, and a light weight low recoiling design to the average soldier. It is far more capable than the Garand in many ways. And the design has been well proven, considering so many derivatives still live on today.
The AK ruled the entire second half of the 20th century, which means as of yet it's arguably still the greatest rifle ever made.
It took until 1990s for the M16 to even get good and until the 2000s for anyone to care about it. We'll have to see how things transpire in the 2030s between the two.
