Security Camera's

OK, there was a thread here about it, but it's not in my history and moe archives doesn't work.

There was some info about TP-Link and setting up a self-hosted recording network thing. I want to make one that doesn't require giving 100$ a month to ouya or 'cloud' or whoever. Just records onsite.

    One PoE switch $40 or so
    Bunch of hikvision PoE cameras
    Intel nuc or whatever small low power pc (rpi could work but I’d think they would be too slow)
    Big hard drive

    Record over lan using vlc or whatever. You could automate it with a simple Python script that makes 1 hour recording, puts them in folders automatically and deletes old ones when the drive gets full. Or record only when motion is detected using opencv and a few lines of code.

    Just don’t let them connect to the internet, it’s not required. If you’re really concerned just put a vlan or something

      Pretty much this but install Frigate in a docker container. Home Assistant to notify you when it detects people (or dogs or whatever). Can also trigger an alarm system.
      If you're a macgay you might try Scrypted.

      Or amcrest.

      I've used a lot of reolink systems, they are decently priced, have poe and WiFi options. I use only their 4k poe cameras, they have one that is basically 2 combined giving you panoramic view from 1 camera. and their software will work with all your open source self hosted software if you want to set that up.

      Same. Their 5mp 510A and 520A are the 5MP with superior motion detection. Don't get the 510 or 520, and, msg them and find out if the 510A/20A's are the latest v2 hardware. They are responsive, but answer from china's timezone, at night for north america. The 'refurbished' basically new 510A's and 520A's are $33, the Samsung Pro Endurance microsd for 128GB is about $12. If you need an entire week of footage get at least the 256GB.

      The Pro Endurance is good for 5+ years. Regular microsd will wear out, particularly if there is continuous recording.

      Latest firmwares are available on Github (I think it's 'at0myk'). That helped to fix some issues I was having.

      If you are only doing cameras, the generic PoE 8 port switch is $35 on ebay. If you want to splurge for their NVR, get the 36-port ($160) and a 4TB WD Purple HD ($80). It has a PoE switch built-in. The NVR gives you a consolidated display (which you can do with a tablet or laptop), and a second point of recording. If you don't need either of those features, you can just mount a tablet and turn on RTSP, using VLC, on old tablets, to flick through the cameras.

      If it's a decent tablet, you can sideload the reolink app and do multiview.

    This is a project on my todo list as well.
    My immediate thought was raspberry pis with motioneyeOS. But I'm sure somebody has come up with something better. Like hacking new firmware onto some popular camera set.
    (like that awesome hacked firmware for robot vacuums)

      MotioneyeOS is fricking unusable piece of hobby shit.

      Overpriced for nothing except for the ones with mechanical zoom and PTZ

    Get a Sannce 8 channel off Amazon. They are ok.
    Keep it off the spywebs and simply change the time ever couple of months.

    PoE is nice but 3 times the cost for what? A zoomy camera the cops can spy on?

      >PoE is nice but 3 times the cost for what? A zoomy camera the cops can spy on?
      Huh? PoE stands for Power over Ethernet. Like

      One PoE switch $40 or so
      Bunch of hikvision PoE cameras
      Intel nuc or whatever small low power pc (rpi could work but I’d think they would be too slow)

      said you can get a cheap 4 or 8 port switch that supports PoE along with ethernet cables that support PoE like cat5e or cat6 and so on. You run cable to each of your cameras and don't have to worry about batteries or an additional power source, just the ethernet cable. Which by the way costs like ten or fifteen cents per foot if you buy in bulk (1000 feet or more) which you probably will if you're wiring cameras on even a midsized property.

      It has nothing to do with the camera itself being "zoomy" or not, and it's arguably far more secure to use hard wiring on your local network rather than wifi. Far less latency as well. If security is a concern just keep this network separate from your internet-connected network or block the cameras at the router level.

        Guess anon means that a setup with ethernet cameras is more expensive than traditional ‘analog’ cameras connected to a dvr. Which is true but takes a lot of extra steps to do real time processing like object/motion detection

        I know what PoE stands for.
        I also know what CCTV stands for, the cable delivers the power over a cable set for much cheaper than PoE switches and PoE cameras.
        I bought a entire 8 night vision camera 1080 system with 6 TB for less than 300 bucks.
        And it is stand alone

    aliexpress 22 USD 5MP ONVIF cams work so fricking well

    build a server with 2 ethernet ports and 1 wifi card hooked up to an aliexpress 38USD 4W "Frick FCC Wifi booster". Provide DHCP to NAT chinkshits and isolate them. You can still connect the server to your home network or the internet with the other ethernet port.

        True, but I want to be able to know my recordings aren't going directly to some cloud service. Any ideas?

      >open source
      good luck
      >for windows
      they exist
      >solar powered cameras
      use lithium batteries, have slower frame rates and only record on motion
      >will work over Wi-Fi
      5g works best
      >cloud based
      why?

    i use alpine linux on a raspberry pi zero wireless, has a camera module and a pretty 3d printed case ii made probably a 20-30$ investment per minus sdcards/usb power solutions made a fancy script too

    #bin/sh

    #delete zero files
    find /media/btrfs/motion -maxdepth 1 -type f -size 0 -print0 -delete

    #check drive fullness
    fullness=$(df -h |grep /media/btrfs|awk '{print $5}'|tr -d % )

    #if drive full
    if [ $fullness -gt 88 ]

    then
    #delete half the files
    filenum=$(ls /media/btrfs/motion -alh |wc -l)
    half=$(echo "$filenum/2"|bc)
    for file in $(find /media/btrfs/motion -maxdepth 1 -type f | sort -zn|head -n $half); do rm $file; done
    #trim the drive
    fstrim /media/btrfs/
    fi

      i use alpine cause its very small (sits on a like 1gb fat32 pi bootloader partition, the os is read only by default the rest of the disk is dedicated to recording storage it uses motion for the... motion detection/recording theres also a jenky 1fps webinterface for me to watch it live the pizero is shit hardware it can barely do this task as is, any other distro will be even worse cause bloat wifi is spotty and drops, for a time i rsynced files but that became tedius so now it just records and if anything weird happens hopefully i can unplug it and have a recording of the past day or two
