I know the claimed purpose of those large ribs was for quick sighting, but wouldn't optics get in the way of that?
Schizophrenia.
1 why has no one made a repro carry handle and handguard for that
2 I find it funny how the stock looks so similar to a sopmod stock
3 would modernized duplex rounds be a meme or could they actually be of use, say for home defense
One of the reasons may be that it's frick ugly.
For duplex rounds, I fail to see the point, particularly for home invasion conditions which aren't really anything at all like battlefield conditions, your target isn't going to have covering fire nor more than maybe, two, perhaps three other dudes with him tops, and you're still outgunning all of them with a single 30rd magazine of 5.56mm whatever.
Optics weren't really that common at the time.
It was research done in the ACR trials that really justified the mass issue of optical sights for the US. The Colt ACR having a prototype of what would become the ACOG later in some configs.
>1 why has no one made a repro carry handle and handguard for that
Too obscure perhaps? How many retro gays would actually want this (not counting myself and (you)) >2 I find it funny how the stock looks so similar to a sopmod stock
Funny also they didn't adopt it onto the original M4s that started getting issued around that time
>3 would modernized duplex rounds be a meme or could they actually be of use, say for home defense
As far as my memory goes the issues with them are that they tend to deviate in unpredictable ways if not nestled perfectly straight, have poorer accuracy overall, and of course you're either upping pressure to push more mass or lowering velocity to do so.
a sight like that would be peak useful for an home defense AR-15. Would basically make it as effective as a shotgun within a few yards, either one will just blow a huge chunk out of you and come out the other side
For her pleasure.
Really though, I was wondering the same thing. Only thing I can think is that it, or the mold for it, was made on a lathe and it was easier to do it like threading a big bolt than to individually cut straight grooves.
I want one of those fricking handguards so bad. What's the deal with the carry handle being flat top? Does it have a rail or is it just a reshaped detachable carry handle? I haven't read into the Colt ACR enough to remember, which reminds me to ask if there's any good reading about it, especially if there's good pictures/specifics, too.
>gutter sight on handguard >which means different carry handle, duh
I should read before replying. I haven't seen any pictures from the top, though; does anyone have one?
Just take a look at how the AR evolution went over the years, both the G11 and the Colt ACR were dead ends with the Colt model being much less ambitious and still a waste of effort
>spend 50 years looking for a new wunderwaffe, going from shit like flechettes and multi-shot grenade launchers to duplex and caseless rounds >countless billions of dollars wasted >finally just settle on a small AR-15
lol
Of course, its wasn't shitty kraut engineering.
Only good old American.
>actually exists
>inb4 g11 concept art shills play pretend
>"uh actually sweaty there are videos"

What’s the deal with the funny handguard rail that goes along the top?
gutter sight

Meant to reply to
>acr test
I've never seen an ACR carbine like that before, did it use the same duplex round?
no reason why it couldn't. the duplex round was totally backwards compatible, early ACRs were literally plain A1s with a rib hand guard.
what was the point of the fins on top? was it a muzzle break? if so this could just be retro fitted into the old rifles
its a sight, like on a skeet shotgun.
It's explained if you read the fricking picture. Basically it's a quick acquisition iron sight for taking snap shots.

Some (European?) company still makes sight ribs in a similar style.
Holy shit that's ugly
It is, but it is probably really effective. a lot of stuff that looks bad is actually really good.
>helical ribs
for why?
For her pleasure.

Makes it look cool if nothing else; I've never seen that variant before, or I see it less often if memory serves me right.

What?
needs an lr300 stock
That would look nice. I wonder if that anon who wanted one ever found one.

Wouldn't it be better though?
