Just accept their demands, get the hostages, then renege on those promises at a later time. It's honorless, but so is taking civilians hostage.

Russians were pretty fed up with compromises, especially after the disgrace of 1990s hostage taking, new successful operations and military victory against Ichkeria. Sudden following would bring up lots of questions .

What were the demands anyway? Probably not money or amnesty

They demanded that Russia stops performing indiscriminate shellings of civilian areas in Chechnia.
Russia responded by indiscriminately shelling a civilian area in Russia.

            >Use tanks and thermobarics to remove MG nest, then proceed using conventional hostage rescue tactics
            Couple points.
1- If they only used those on a separate building. How the frick did they manage to burn down the school, kill 334 and injure 783 of the less than 1200 hostages?! Do you have any idea how hard it is to get a 93% injury rate?!
2-The use of thermobaric weapons against areas with civilians is banned by the CCW. Meaning as of the Protocol of Incendiary Weapons, had Russia performed this "conventional hostage rescue tactic" against anyone but themselves, they'd be considered war criminals.
And you wanna know why the UN bans thermobarics on civilian infrastructure? This fricking siege is why you bloody imbecile!
No. Shooting a Schnell at a room full of kids is not an appropiate tactic you lunatic. Not even if there's an mg nest. That's what snipers are for! They had 3 days of prep time for gods sake give a western sniper 3 days for prepping on a stationary target he'll finish the job by midday and spend the other 2 days wanking in his hole!

            >What were the demands anyway? Probably not money or amnesty
They did not send out a formal list of demands. Probably didn't even prepare it. That was one of the factors which forced the assault, its been more than two days, hostages are starting to die out of dehydration because the terrorists are explicitly preventing them from drinking, and the negotiations did not even start yet.

Best the negotiators could get were insane demands like formal recognition of Chechen independence, full withdrawal of Russian forces from Chechnya, Putin resigning and so on. It's likely that the terrorists didn't actually plan to have any of their demands fulfilled, the goal was simply to terrorize the population and undermine the government. They didn't just massacre hostages on the spot because they wanted the government to try and fail at resolving the crisis.

Chinese SWAT unironically do some high-speed shit from time to time.
Not generally organised terrorist groups doing shit but lone-actors going postal and taking hostages happens quite a lot, China is kind of a high stress society these days, not a lot of welfare, lots of people in danger of losing their homes if they lose their jobs, investments disappeared from mismanagement or fraud, lots of ways to be financially wiped-out and left with nothing and no prospects. Their cities are all huge (10mil+), they have a lot of such cities and people in financial and legal crises and going postal happens from time to time.

Most SWAT guys stand around outside train stations, malls and city squares but now and then they do stuff like . I've seen countless clips on news in China that had stuff like that. Generally, a negotiator keeps them occupied until they tire and let their guard down and then they get sniped at short range or some plain clothes person who's infiltrated close with like a pizza or water bottle whips out a pistol and pops them in the head at point blank.
They don't every really try and take them alive once there are hostages.

picrel is a pretty common site at large intersections, transport hubs and malls. Not that stun baton/sword exactly but I've seen plenty of SWAT dudes with regular stun battons and firearms standing guard in high-traffic areas.

Happens all the time in China, especially nutters going after children with knives for some reason.
Xinjiang was a super dangerous shithole filled with mafia and islamist nutters before the Chinese eliminated them all. I know SerpentZA now is like "CHINA BAD" but even he once told a story about being in Xinjiang and hearing in the hotel room next door an assassination being ordered and then having to escape out the window when they realised Serpentza and Laowhy were in the next room, also being chased by terrorists off road trying to steal their motorbikes.
The fact Xinjiang is now one of the safest regions in China says something.

              Anonymous

I'm pretty sure that story is either complete bullshit or grossly exaggerated. Aside from anything else, Chinese hotels aren't that bad with paper-thin walls. I've heard women loudly cumming in the next room a few times but could never make out phone calls or conversation, even when there's obviously a majong game going.

Xinjiang has been cracked down on, they're basically cycling the entire population through indoctrination camps and torturing, raping and sometimes killing a whole bunch of them so they know what happens if they go back, as part of a process of turning them all into slave labour and transferring all their land and businesses to Han ownership so that they never have the resources or will to stand up to Beijing again.

But yeah, school stabbing attacks are surprisingly common, there's at least one every month or two. Every school in the country has security guards at the gates and parents aren't generally allowed in except to visit teachers and stuff.

Looking back, they would have been in their 20s now and no small portion of them would be conscripted and participating in Putin's revanchist rampage, so good fricking riddance. When you're dealing with a society this hell-bent on being a menace upon the world, the issue of its physical elimination falls outside of the moral debate and becomes an ugly necessity.
