Why is everyone obsessed with zones of control when they're very clearly conducting cossack border raids? the fluidity is the point

What happens if Russia never "takes the bait" and does not remove any troops from Ukraine to reinforce Belgorod?

So it isnt bait per say, but rather an unpleasant situation where every alternative is bad

Exactly. Ukraine has done the same thing all war. It is deliberate. Some examples:

        1. Choose to fight in the cities and deny Russia as many railroads as possible. Russia has to attack cities and take more casualties while slowing their advance or they could advance around cities and submit to harassment and logistics issues.
        2. Make a big fuss in Kherson. Russia is forced to relocate troops to avoid losing their only bridgehead over the Dnipro or Ukraine would have ran over the unreinforced Kherson troops like a Semi-Truck over a toddler
        3. Blow up supply bridges to Kherson. Either cede territory and run away, or fight without supplies and lose anyway
        4. Not launching an offensive after Kherson/waiting for more aide. Either Russia was going to launch a winter/spring offensive in the cold and mud against entrenched Ukrainian positions and leave themselves open for a counter attack or they would leave Ukraine unmolested while the balance of firepower turned against them.

There is more, I'm sure, but Ukraine always seems to make the smart choice in these situations. They seem to fight like a "counter puncher" in boxing. Give up nothing easy and just force the enemy into opening themselves up.

          >Ukraine always seems to make the smart choice
They aren't making the choices. They are being guided by the West providing them intelligence and strategy in addition to weapons.

            >being guided by the West providing them intelligence and strategy in addition to weapons
You're underestimating their senior staff. I had the chance to talk to a few of them in, idk, 2017 or so, and I was pretty impressed with how they were handling combined arms.

Then Ukraine gets what it wants early: a buffer between itself an Russia. Plus pressure on Luhansk as it expands

A buffer within Russian territory is an end-goal Ukraine desires anyway. It being now as a breakaway state opposed to later in DMZ terms within the peace negotiations is fine, too.

Now that you mention it, probably nothing. Sacrifice some Mobiks to hole up in Belgorod for token resistance and to bind troops. RVC and FRL can't advance deep into russia due to logistics and getting stretched too thin (unless serious AFU involvment happens which currently is inpossible). Just turn off the internet and phone network in Belgorod region "due to ongoing military operations" and do nothing but scorch the earth with grads while boasting with AI-generated images of dead green berets. As long as St. Petersburg and Moscow is fine, everything is.
Thats the one thing russia got going for itself, its vast emptiness.

They can keep going until they take Belgorod. Then they can use it as a bargaining chip. Girkin said that could be one way the counteroffensive is gonna go before they started doing these incursions.

Ukies aren't stupid enough to train and arm unloyal russians. I'm amazed they found russian they trust at all for the Free Russia Legion (RVC was fighting since 2014 i think).
The only way i see them actually using them is just sending them unarmed as a cannon fodder, blackshirts-style, which would be kind of poetic because that's what russians did when they reentered occupied Ukraine during WW2. Local ukrainians were instantly pressed into service and without training or proper equipment (if any at all) sent to force the crossing of the Dnipro river.

RVC is pretty much the russian branch of Azov. Most of its figureheads are either azov veterans or even had leading roles in azov like Alexey Levkin (pbuh).
