Russia's New Afalina USV is RC Toy

Russian media has revealed the 'Afalina' uncrewed surface vessel to rival the Ukrainian Sea Baby and Magura types. The Russian version, actually a sub-scale prototype, is shown being put through its paces on a calm lake.

The prototype actually bears a striking resemblance to a remote control model of one of Ocke Mannerfelt's famous 'bat boats'. Swede Ocke Mannerfelt designed his iconic bat boats for racing. They are so-named because of the distinctive wings at the stern which resemble the classic batmobile. These aid stability on tight turns. Overall the designs have a reputation for seakeeping.

    Mash:

The first naval kamikaze drones with artificial intelligence were made for the Russian army. According to Mash, mass production is planned to start this summer.

The 3.5-meter domestic surface UAV was named Afalina. Recently, experts have been testing its draft sample on reservoirs and rivers. They say that all that remains is to improve the software and tinker with a couple of details. But we can already say that it will carry up to 200 kilograms of explosives or any other load.

In addition to this, there is a maximum speed of 60 km/h, a range of 500 km, as well as the ability to control both using VR glasses and a joystick (FPV), and using the autopilot setting. One unit of such beauty will cost only a million rubles. A possible area for use of the "Afalina" could be the Black Sea, since its functionality is wide - it can patrol, collect and conduct reconnaissance. The advantage is to carry out search and evacuation activities.

why does it have a wienerpit? they just bought a scale model off wish didn't they?

        >The 'prototype' does appear to be a modified remote control toy boat. Even the wienerpit has windows which are unnecessary in this application. Remote control models of the bat boat are available on EBay and other online market places.

yes, they push it out, people eat it up, move on to the next topic and never mention it again
their target audience thinks "that's a neat thing to have, we must be strong" and then move on a few days or a week later they show of an other "invention"
it creates a feeling that you are an advanced nation with tons of new gear without one thing you can point at to show them they aren't (armata never entering service)
That being said it would work on a western audience to.
It's like coca cola adds, they show happy people so you associate them with happy people. You never bother to ask if coca cola actually makes you happy because it's a 30second commercial and then you get distracted by something else only the "coca cola = happy" stays

Yes, it works on intended targets. Like when putin targets some people with "russia based trad white country" and another bunch of people with " russia is multicultural paradise and there is only soviet man" - its all about targeting groups.
This video makes above 100IQ people laugh but american/russian boomers and average military larpers will eat it up, think russia stronk and cool and forget it by tomorrow, only remembering that russia is developing advanced shit.

Giving them the benefit of the doubt, given their economy sea drones are about the only way they can maintain naval power in the Black Sea.

How big were the botes that Ukies used to decimate the black sea fleet? I always assumed they were full size botes with jury-rigged RC

much smaller, they're Kayak sized, but a Kayak full of explosives it still very bad news for any sort of modern thin skinned warship.
A navy with good damage control and reliable watches and point defenses could deal with that sort of threat easily, but were not talking about a good navy here.

I still don't understand why they are making these things. The fact they are only testing them in still water and not around their coasts implies they only to intend to use these in rivers and lakes, so I'm not entirely sure what the target would be.

      >The fact they are only testing them in still water and not around their coasts implies they only to intend to use these in rivers and lakes
What makes you think the design isn’t capable of going into open ocean? Maybe that particular body of water was simply closest to where it’s being developed.
      >so I'm not entirely sure what the target would be
Ukrainian commercial vessels, NATO naval and coast guard assets.
Also to show their domestic audience that they too are capable of constructing remote controlled boats

        Anonymous

        >What makes you think the design isn’t capable of going into open ocean?

Waves and strong currents would cause it to tip over, it's not sitting deep enough in the water to have the necessary stability.
