Russian equipment before the invasion

I know people like to think that russian equipment began to dwindle in quality since the war began, but their equipment has always been shit. If you look at any pictures before the war began, they still look like poor fricking infantry.

They always were just coasting off of Soviet stocks. None of their military procurement or R&D that entered development after 1991 was actually intended to produce a real product in any significant number, it was all just opportunities for graft.

Thus vaporware like the T-14 or the SU-57.

        It happened in Syria.
The Kurdish forces and US Military killed some IS. The US Military did some patrols in Syria. Not all of these meetings were friendly. There were also videos of Russians and Americans trying to force each other off roads with MRAPS.
The Kurdish forces US Military pulled back a bit, while the Russians claimed victory over the evil Yankees, etc.
Of course, the Russians also attacked the Kurdish Forces and the US Military with their Wagner proxy, but that Wagner Regiment was mostly killed by US air strikes.
This is just the odd friendly picture, which morons over use.

I did see this on leddit before the war and the comments were like "When it all comes down to it Russian and American soldiers are brothers" or some bullshit.

Not to be all sappy but, were they entirely wrong? At the end of the day, all militaries are comprised of young, stupid men being sent to do dirty work for old, stupid men. Is the average Russian soldier that different from an American in that regard?

his kit in the picture is fine, if a bit lower quality than the american - but why does he have itty bitty chicken legs, anon?

We can't tell what his legs look like under there. He could be a lanklet, he could be lean athletic, or he could indeed just have regular old chicken legs. Who the frick cares either way?

Wouldn't a Russian know how to properly pronounce it, since its a Russian food? Shithead. Im American, so I don't know or care.

It's funny because before Russia tarded out in Ukraine and Georgia, the general sentiment towards them was that our old grudges were history and we were all moving forward hand in hand as the collective west. You could see it in all kinds of media, movies, television, games. Russians stopped being depicted as the scheming adversarial rat men, and you started seeing Russian characters being heroes and good guys. All that time though, Russians just assumed the west was seething and trying to destroy them.

Whatever the case, it still doesn't explain the Russia Derangement Syndrome that so many people on here and other sites seem to be experiencing. Like do people not have jobs or lives?

Sounds about right. I have a slav friend who parrots Russian talking points 24/7 or saying she wants to see the west burn and enslaved, and she's almost always taken aback when I tell her about how we in the west saw things before the war. She complains that her father took her Soviet memorabilia and burned it, says he's a "pro-NATO fascist who wants to kill all Russians", idolizes the Soviets and all that crap. If she wasn't so knowledgable and fascinated by weapons I wouldn't even keep trying to talk sense into her, it's like going back to the early days of the war and getting mobbed by people who accused me of being Russian for breathing wrong as I typed the captcha, but in reverse this time.

              >it was only because it was cheap!
It just reeks of desperation because everyone remembers when the board was actually fun will know it's not true. Instead this place is just /misc/ adjacent. Sure, people didn’t hate Russia as much back then but overall the average poster was happy about them throwing out yanukovych and disliked Putin since his 2008 chimpout.

This board is probably around 50% NAFO/Ukraine/NATO shills and bots now that auto-reply stuff like vatBlack person or call you a Indian any time you're trying to have a discussion that suggests anything other than total support for Ukraine. Mods have deleted every neutral post I've made about the conflict and given me bans for 'discussing politics on a weapons board'. Even fairly benign stuff like questioning Ukraine's absolutely ridiculous official combat personnel death toll (10:1 k/d ratio???).

It's tiresome and gay but indicative of the internet as a whole now. Things have been bad on the chans for the past decade but with improvements to AI, it's becoming sharply worse as the dead internet theory gathers more credence every day. In the end, it's just more reason to leave this shithole full stop.

I miss when action b-movies had sovl.
They used to be shitty but directors actually wanted to make something entertaining because that’s the only way they’d get viewers. Modern b-movie meta is to get some actor that used to be big years ago (Like Bruce Willis) for 1 or 2 scenes then use that at the singular selling point of the movie with the rest being so boring and generic you might as well be sleeping

It would be really interesting to see an unprepared peacetime Mexican economy try to gear up for war production while fighting Russians with a shit economy geared for war. Are there any good historical examples of that?

The US had a tiny MIC just 5 years before WW2 started. Mexico is the 11th biggest economy but has the 6th biggest industrial sector. Would be pretty interesting to see how they could potentially do it. All those car factories could be retrofitted to making tanks, ifvs etc, appliance factories could make weapons. A lot of electronic and aerospace manufacturing has also moved there over the last two decades two and that could be directly turned towards war purpose rather quick.

Anything that's more of a "normal" conflict? USA and WW2 is just a weird situation, a lot of similarities but we already had our economy gearing up for war by selling the other countries a bunch of shit, plus the general geographic isolation that made the front far away. I wonder if there's a situation like

but between bordering nations. I'm thinking more of the struggles Mexico might have initially and how they'd alleviate them without aid.

If there was an actual threat of a foreign power invading Mexico the US would be spewing out aid funds like someone after drinking from the ganges. The US would never let a foreign country threaten war so close to the US. Hell a big chunk why they are now being so strict about migrants coming over the southern border isn't even Mexicans, it's because now a lot of Russians, Chinese and Arabs are showing up there.

No I get that. I'm really talking about a hypothetical war situation between two bordering nations, one with a shitty economy geared for war and the other with a good economy geared for peacetime. Let's say this conflict occurs in a vacuum, no aid or allies. If war-geared shit economy bombs/invades good peace economy in a surprise attack, how well would the good economy manage to perform? And, following that, if there were any situations like that in history.

That'd be like modern day Germany vs modern day Russia. I'd bet on Germany winning in that event even with all their squabbling as long as nukes aren't used. IIRC, Germany actually can manufacture nukes themselves, they're just morally against it.

Yes, but with a gigantic in tact capacity to make a huge number of weapons. The German government just doesn't like funding the army. But don't forget the German MIC is gigantic due to them being one of the top 5 arms manufacturers due to exports.

      I heard a Russia joke:
Russian Military general is at a diplomatic event. He meets an American General. The Russian proudly says: the Russian Army is the best fed Army in the world. Everyday, our troops eat 3,000 calories. The American General says: oh that nice, every day our troops eat 5,000 calories. The Russian General walks away with is staff officers. He says what a liar no one can eat that many beets.
I might have gotten it a little wrong. The Russian military is notorious for having shitty food.

pretty much, it was like now where russia can keep other nations dependent with the promise of cheap oil and gas, except now russia is playing the role of the overly confident expansionary force. they were never really allies though, hitler came to power on account of his anti-bolshevism

            >they were never really allies though, hitler came to power on account of his anti-bolshevism
they started WW2 together with the molotov-ribbentrop pact giving the germans the confidence they will not have a two front war on their hands from the get go. Which they feared like fire. Then started carving eastern euro to pieces together. This includes the winter war episode, occupying balts after they cucked out from a fight and, of course, poland

I remember reading some article about how some German officer in WW2 decided to agree to an unconditional surrender even though his commanders were telling him he needed to fight when his intel reported that the Americans were fighting over which flavors of ice cream they were going to get and that they had multiple brands to choose from, from different specialized ice cream mess trucks just behind the front lines while the Germans were running out of food in their own country and were dependent on horse drawn carts by then.

The Kurd forces and US Military later set up the Eastern safe zone for Kurds. USA drew a line following the river and said everything East is a Kurd safe zone. That way US Military and Russian Military would not do anything stupid to start something bigger.

Russian kit isn't even NIR. They didn't bother because they don't issue NVGs to regular infantry for fear of them stealing it for booze money. With Ratnik they tried to look the part of a modern army. But like everything else they have ever done, its just a front and lacks substance.

What I like about this war is, it made it obvious that Russia always relied and currently relies on meatwaves to win its wars, and now its dwindling population and advancements in weapon technology nullify that strategy. So basically once Russian nukes finish rusting into dust it stops being a threat ever again. Probably gonna be a Chinese oil province.

US MPs aren't selected for large size, with the ostensible being soldiers should be sufficiently disciplined that it's not needed to beat them into submission, but really it's because of American ideas of equality and that manlets should have equal chances.
Meanwhile everyone in the real life who's ever spent any time around the Infantry knows that when they get out of hand you need large burly men to beat them into submission.
