yet ukraine can on several occasionaly not only penetrates russian IADS (with storm shadows) but they sometimes destroy advanced AD equipment like radars, launchers, etc.

This isn’t because the s200 is amazing but because hitting an AWACS the size and speed of an airliner isn’t hard if you have the range. And the s200 in particular does have the range

Extremely well. They've mastered taking down volleys of US GMLRS rockets, SDBs, "stealthy" cruise missiles like Storm Shadow etc.
Very cost efficient too because the effectors are relatively cheap.

here's an even better video than the first. in one of the clips you see the launcher fire multiple times failing to shootdown whatever's coming from it (probabbly a delilah missile). it seems there is a hit before the one we're seeing the view from lands.

russian AD is only good for props

          Anonymous

why did Pantsir fail here despite firing at least 2 times. it's probabbly good to assume they fired more than 2 times since the video released by the idf start a few seconds before impact.

do these simply have shitty guidance? why would you have trouble with shooting something coming right towards you at airline speeds?

            Anonymous

Rumor has it that most panty-stirs are equipped with command guided missiles (it can fire multiple types of missiles, but the russian blowpipe version is the cheapest one). its basically MCLOS but guided by a computer algorithm. So if the algo fricks up on the part of where the frick the actual missile is in regards to the target you get that sort of shit where it misses shots that an actual blowpipe operator would hit.

You can load different ammo into weapons. In this case it's a 30mm autocannon with XM1223 airburst rounds. The stingers are also for air defense. The hellfires are neat because they can kill air targets at longer range and also still hit ground targets further than the TOW. It's primarily anti-air but also can stand in as a ATGM launch platform.

you arent shooting down an F-22 or even an F-15 with any gun

Gun based systems are making a comeback. VADS specifically is pretty old and was a stopgap at the time anyways. Its not as sophisticated as Gepard.

That looks more like an anti-infantry gun and a grenade launcher for self protection, not AA gun.

Modern fire control blurs the lines. Any gun can be an AA gun if your fire control is good enough. With AMP, the 120mm gun on an Abrams is an anti air gun.

Same reason Iran was able to hit the most heavily defended targets in the world: Nevatim and Ramon airbases, protected by Arrow, Patriot, THAAD, AEGIS with SM-3, US Naval fighters etc. etc.

It's impossible to protect every inch of surface on a tiny shithole like Israel, than it becomes even more difficult to protect a front line that's 2000 km across.

Kek the two scenarios aren't comparable. One was a saturation attack prosecuted by a mix of low-flying and ballistic weapons, whereas this is a solitary non-stealth ISR aircraft flying tens of thousands of feet in the air. Either Russian surveillance radar in northern Ukraine badly overstretched, or the operators are remarkably incompetent.

        >Same reason Iran was able to hit the most heavily defended targets in the world
lmfao. iran fired over 300 cruise and ballistic missiles with drones. all of their cruise missile and drones were shotdown even before entering israeli airspace. only a couple of ballistic missiles got through which is great for one of the largest saturation attacks in modern history. and those that got through only managed to make a couple of potholes.

reminder, israel stealthy took out a radar of an S300 guarding one of Iran's nuclear sites. no saturation was needed. it quick, silent and stealthy. they made the iranians remove their AD for sometime. the iranians aren't retads and understand that russian AD is shit and their sites are sitting ducks

Because Soviet air forces were meant to fight from within their AD bubble, not penetrate enemy AD. So Ukraine didn't get to inherit weapons and training to let their pilots seek and destroy Russian AD.
You're flat out denying a massive problem with Russian AD. Defensive systems can't only against enemy aircraft. They also have to deal with long range munitions and observer drones. While an aircraft might be in danger if flown into a subpar AD bubble, you can afford to fly missiles and drones into it.

Shitty drones can probably even hit Washington, just like they keep getting trough in Ukraine.

Russia is big and they have still open civilian air traffic.

Just too much terrain to cover against a saturation attack and the fact that civilian traffic is still open likely means they have some pretty stringent engagement rules to avoid shooting down some oligarch private jet.

Most often Ukraine will try sending a couple of dozens drones see if any get trough, get a good feeling of whatever defenses are around or on the way to the refinery and than send a sufficient amount of drones to ensure they can overwhelm the air defenses or go around any air defense on the way.

If the Ukrainians wanted to be really dangerous they could design drones that fly as fast as a commercial airliner and have the drones fly on the same vectors and altitudes.

It would cause Russia to shut down commercial air traffic unless they want risking shooting down their own passenger planes.

They wouldn't be launched from Mexico, they'd be launched from Maryland or something. USA doesn't have to worry about intercontinental war so much, just terrorism.
The challenge is just acquiring and building enough explosives inside USA to perform a meaningful strike.
Same problem any terrorist has really.

How do you sneak a bunch of drones into the US? You know large shipments are inspected when they enter the country right?

              Anonymous

You don't sneak them in, you just send people who can build them and order the parts off Amazon or from hobbyist shops.

The drones are easy, a credit card and an engineering graduate with a clean record is sufficient, maybe even one who currently studies at a US college. The hard part is the payload.

Those were drones and pretty precise, maybe they were actually controlled rather than being GPS guided.
I wouldn't think target recognition for terminal guidance would be within Yemen's reach, Iran hasn't even provided that kind of technology to Russia.

I wonder what kind of commlink they'd have used.
Some reports said that the successful drones came from the west while the cruise missiles and other stuff was coming from Yemen or Iraq and those, at least the missiles, were intercepted successfully.

We have seen the Ukrainians using S300 to decent success in the first year of the war.

In some ways they have better performance than the patriot, even if their precision isn't as good, they still have a fairly good chance of successful interceptions they do have a lot more range.

The reason why the Russians can now pummel Ukrainian front lines with glide bombs is specifically because the Ukrainians ran out of S300 missiles.
The extra range of the S300, even if it misses often, successfully deterred the Russian aviation as they could not launch glide bombs from a safe stand off distance when the S300 was in operation.

The patriot as good as it is has limited range, in particular when faced with high flying targets and we need to consider that the patriot is just too valuable to be put too close to the frontlines.

The result is that by replacing the S300 with patriots now the Russians can hit daily Ukrainian frontlines with their air force.

S400 and S300 might not have as good of hit percentage as the patriot and likely would not be able to intercept hypersonics nor engage the most advanced stealth aircrafts reliably but against the like is Russian planes and older western models (F16, F14, F18, A12...) it can create a large enough area of denial to prevent thr deployment of long range munitions.

Personally I expect the Patriot future updates to increase its range substantially to avoid the current scenario unfolding in Ukraine.

The times Russian AD has been defeated is VASTLY outnumbered by the times it works — hence why Moscow isn’t a flaming ruins by now and why Kerch is still standing. Also you have NO idea what went into the few successful penetrations you get to see happen.

One rocket was "likely" intercepted, 3 hit FSB base, 1 hit near one ship damaging it, one hit near second damaging it. At best 16% interception rate, at worst 0% interception rate

            Anonymous

Yes they were hit. It seems likely after the fact that Kerch was the primary target but when the first wave (reportedly 12 Storm Shadows and a MALD) was intercepted they switched targets to the Black Sea Fleet. Lots of reports of Kerch bridge coming under attacks, ie the usual social media posts reporting Kerch AD going off, smoke generator activating, bridge shut down, etc. Later on Russian media reported details of the attack. Ukies had better success against the BSF base so that enters reality for /k/ while the failed Kerch attack does not enter reality.

Every time Russians lie another story becomes less believed, so unless you can show me video of 12 SS intercepted over Kerch bridge you can stuff that fanfic up your assrtn4

Attack on Kerch bridge requires complex operation with both sea and air forces, so until Ukrainemanages to clear way for it's larger drones to attack from sea it won'tbe blown up, furthermore TAURUS missiles are better suited for bridge attack than Storm Shadow

Personally I feel all it would take is a few homegrown big boys. Ukraine has shown it can make its own long range ballistic missiles I'm pretty sure they could just fire several, it's not like Russian AD could stop them all.
Either way Russians have locked down any news in regards to the bridge for almost a year now, even if there were hits we'd never hear about it.

Precision needed to hit support pillar is very high, you need >1 meter CEP on multiple pillars to render both train bridge and car bridge unusable

True. And we know that Russian AD and jamming efforts are mostly concentrated around the bridge, both because it’s a major supply line (perhaps in the top three most important) and because it’s a symbol for the regime. The Ukies should play it smart and capitalize on the weaker AD elsewhere to continue striking airfields, fuel depots, ammo dumps, enemy artillery, radar sites, rail lines, armor concentrations, refineries, and C2 nodes. Maybe when they have 30~ F16s to field they can launch a joint UBV, missile, air strike against the bridge and cause major collapse.

                >If [X] hasn't been hit yet, it must be that our team successfully intercepted all of the probably numerous attempts to hit [X]
                >Not because there was no attempt to hit [X]

This is the same logic that gave a new life to the term "wunderwaffen" by ziggers.
It's assuming all of your troops should already be dead without inflincting a single casualty to NATO equipment so that any deviation from that grim prospect is a proof of both NATO equipment failure and your total victory, which is setting the bar quite low for your own team.

Storm shadows are fired from SU-24s and the variant Ukraine has received lacks the range to even hit the Kerch bridge. Directly over Kherson is within SAM range and still doesn't allow you to hit the bridge, you would have to release SS literally past the zapo frontline to hit it. Ukraine went after the black sea fleet because Russia attempted to blockage their grain exports, and the black sea fleet got bent over and given the mobik treatment.

I believe it, especially because Russia failed to intercept single missile on port few kilometers from Kerch bridge, they also shot down 15 out of 11 ATACMS and they successfully shot down every drone targeting refineries but then debri of them fell and blew up said refineries.
Every time Russians lie another story becomes less believed, so unless you can show me video of 12 SS intercepted over Kerch bridge you can stuff that fanfic up your assrtn4

ATACAMS is a coldwar-era ballistic missile, yet it took out russia latest and most advanced AD

NATO's top notch missiles would be something like JASSAM, which the russians would have no chance of stopping. now imagine if 20-50 of those were fired at once from cargo planes in conjuctions with MALDS and HARM missiles. no army in the world would be able to stop them

            Anonymous

that video's was just a test run btw. the US has been making about 500 JASSAMS each year for some years now. and an attack would look something like this animation

            Anonymous

Both Russia and China would stop such an attack with trivial ease. JASSMs are just cruise missiles. An AD network would have to be degraded significantly prior to launching such an attack. That’s exactly how the Russians were able to push through those cruise missile attacks against power plants a month ago —only after Ukie AD had been sufficiently depleted first. Cruise missiles are not difficult targets for modern AD, even with countermeasures and penetration aids like MALD.

Yes I’m aware that the Russian successfully used a low-observable cruise missile but, again, that’s because Ukie AD had been sufficiently degraded beforehand. Low-observable is NOT stealth.

well russia can't even stop coldwar-era ballistic missiles and storm shadows so they're already out of the picture. as for china, it doesn't matter how good their AD is. they simply won't be able to stop a swarm of 30-50 JASSAM that arrive after HARM missiles and MALDs decoys.

              Anonymous

I think the main use of JASSAM is to degrade during one single attack
Spamm so many missiles in one attack that the AD counters have to reload. But can't reload in time so a part of the missiles will get trough regardless.
This could also force your opponent to spread out their AD less so make sure they can cover each other in order to deal with spamm attacks. Which in turn means that they cover less area.

They'd also make very short work of the chinese little manmade islands.

don't forget that MALDS go in first. they'll be the fist to stimulate AD and then after that the HARMs arrive. the JASSAMs will be the last of their worries

The USAF transportation fleet takes up more fuel than all of its combat aircraft. The ability to just drop high capability cruise missiles from any of them at any time safely (ie with standoff) is an insane gamechanger. You don't need to allocate the worn out B-2/B-1/B-52 fleet or do complicated shit with F-15Es and tankers, you can just cut the payload of a C-17 going to europe by 80% then have it dump a few JASSMs out the back and go on its way.

Turkroaches must feel like total fricking morons for getting themselves kicked out of the F-35 program in order to buy fricking S400s lmao. Can you imagine making that huge of mistake?

      Anonymous

In retrospect it seems like a huge self-own, but consider it from the Turks’ perspective.
      1. Your connected MIC owners want S-400 so they can copy the tech and sell their own portfolio of products enabled by that tech.
      2. You didn’t think the U.S. would REALLY boot you out of F-35 program, but even if they did you;re being told how much more profitable it would be to get the S-400 tech — because being in the F-35 program just means getting the plane and some support industries you don’t get any of the tech.
So it was about the tech they could take from the S-400, not just trading sone SAM system for a 5th gen fighter. If they had known for certain that they’d get booted out of the F-35 program (and later get denied Patriots when it turned out the S-400 was useless in Syria) they may not have went in that direction.

I’m just stating facts. Western tech is alien tier compared to thirdies, but it only got that way thanks to copious amounts of (expensive) R&D. I’m glad our doctrine is to overestimate our enemies and underestimate ourselves. It prevents us from being caught off guard (at least for the overwhelming majority of the time)
America is on the 4the gen of stealth bombers, while Russia, NK, China, and Iran haven’t even made a single stealth bomber. And as the Ukie war has proven, Western AD (not even being used in conjunction with western Airborne Interceptor) is able to seat their shit out of the sky.

Can the F-16 help with the anti-air effort, namely the MIG31s and the Tu-22s that are in charge of Kinzhals? They're detected the moment they take off, but how far away do they launch the missiles from and can the F-16 equipped with the correct AA take care of them?

Not really, those are fired from inside of russia and ukraine is not getting newest AMRAAMs. They just don't have the range. But if they get connected to NATO datalink they should stop most of russian aircraft from flying near the front line (like su34). But yeah they will be mostly used for SEAD and launching cruise missiles. Don't expect any air battles like during the first week.

In conventional warfare, that was the point of the Second Offset and the reason why Soviet planners started to shift their posture around the mid 1980s and shat their pants once they saw what happened in the Gulf War. If I can simply locate your radars through any kind of means and then send a wave of missiles precise enough to directly destroy them, you are basically done for since you don't really expect an attack when the intelligence collection has been done passively.

Another thing might be whether you need to actively operate within AA, then you have other tools for that, but for constantly attriting enemy forces by targeting the nodes and high value parts? Fear the E8 not the F35

Weren't they made up with generous amounts of EW equipment? After all, the point about them isn't how old the airframes are but how powerful their equipment is in jamming and deceiving radars.

I swear that the only reasons Russia hasn't been freedomned is because of nukes, China and being such a shithole that no one wants to deal with refugees and guerrillas in another case of battle for nowherestan.
