Russia paid almost 2billion $ for this. Why?

This is Shahed drone.

It has bomb in the front, 50hp engine in the back and wings on sides. Making one costs 20k-50k. In terms of mass produced, military kamikaze drones, you can't get any more primitive.

Russia paid 1750000000$ in gold for this technology. I know T-14 or SU-57 was a meme even pre-war. I know that due to sanctions Russian technology is going back in time, but much does it actually went that they had to pay shittone of gold for something that looks like a student's project?

I know it's easy to shit on Russians currently, but literally, how did someone justified paying billions for the most primitive drone technology imaginable to his supervisor, when that supervisor just expected bazillions of SU-57 and T-14 to be build in-house?

So they paid 2 billion dollars for knowhow of making a drone that is cheaper than it's 30 year old counterpart... and?

My question is: how didn't they have brainpower to figure it out how to attach a bomb to a lawn mower engine with wings? This is exactly what some Iranian engineering students did few years before - and Russians just paid 2 billion dollar for this.

        >Iran gave them electrical schematics, structural blueprints, etc. With a list of instructions translated by Google into Russian on how to assemble them.
But it's not rocket science (I mean literally). If Russians have industry that is capable of designing and building planes, they should've figure it out all by themselves for far less than 2 billion dollars. Less than 2 million probably.

I'm not even talking about reverse engineering that thing - I'm talking about building something superior/cheaper. They were 2nd exporter of military equipment until very recently.

        [...]

        >actually Iran specified US Dollars
From my understanding deal was settled in US Dollars, but paid in gold, as Russians really don't want to give up on their reserves of USish cash (they need it to stabilize ruble).
        >Making one costs 20k-50k
        >nonsense
C'mon, objectively it should cost even less than that. However I understand that military equipment is generally overpriced and when Russia eventually buys license for pic related from Houthis, it'll cost them probably over 100k per piece.

Knowing Russia, it will probably keep the same 375k price during domestic production. Manufacturer is a state, so it will basically pay itself, and this 375k will count as a gpd. When Putin said growith is 5.5%, then gdp must grow by 5.5% and there are only so many way to fake these numbers.

There are reports that Russia started using students as a workforce, so they don't need to add workhours to their costs.

all of the drones you linked are multiple use, while shahed is single use.

A single hellfire missile costs as much as a Shahed.

And it would be better comparision than multiple use drones linked, so why link image with them instead of hellfire?

Range of a hellfire is 10 km, so you can't use it to hit positions behind enemy lines without sending the expensive drone behind enemy lines. Plus, the warhead is much smaller on a hellfire.

dont need a huge warhead when you have a tiny CEP. hell we took the warhead out and replaced it with knives because we didnt need a warhead to kill one guy.

Anon, the targeting computer on the F-16 allowed it to fire dumb bombs with precision close to that of PGMs.The F-35 has even better hardware,so those 15 would be the same as 15k JDAMs for the russians.

Sadly no, even if nominally free they still have an economic value due laws of supply and demand, no it doesnt matter if you dont believe in them, like gravity they are inexorable because its just thermodynamics and causality seen from another angle, hence why in the end all these alternative economic models always come crashing.

the way how government contracts work is simple
company A asks for $10M - basic material, low skilled workmanship, lasts 10 years at best, if the stars align
company B asks for $20M - premium materials, skilled workmanship, lasts virtually forever
company C asks for $50M - subcontract company A, keep $20M for yourself and $20M goes to procurement officials

Why the frick are shills working overtime to defend this dogshit drone? It's worthless militarily. The only notable thing it did is kill a low triple digit number of civilians during the entirety of their use.

    >military equipment is generally overpriced
    >says who?
    Says I.
    >why?
Because when some country needs e.g. 100 tanks, it will buy 100 tanks. When you feel threatened, you'll buy a gun, no mattter if it costs you 100$ or 1000$.

Government contracts in general are always chance for companies to inflate prices (it's like that in any country, not just corrupted shitholes), but military spendings in particular is a jackpot.

When Iran was using Shaheds in Iraq or Syria it costed them 20 000$ per piece because it's literally bigger rc plane with a bomb attached. When Russia started buying them, price jumped to 375 000$ per piece. So Russia paid 1 750 000 000$ to Iran, and it can now domestically produce them at price of around 50 000$ per piece. And it's all the same 20 000$ rc plane with a bomb.

    >if you think that this is at all possible, you totally don't understand finance
You seem to not understand Russia (assuming you're genuine). Meanwhile Rosstat retroactively changed gdp of Russia for 2022, to make it fit their numbers on 2023. They did it by re-counting of assets that are now taken into gdp (but weren't in 2022), but it all started with a stroke of a pen of an ex-commie, economic moron that currently holds the highest position in Russian Federation.

When Chinks give their gdp, they at least try to justify it by some inflated investments done by local governments in each of their provinces. Russians stopped give a frick entirely, as their country turns into oversized Iran/North Korea hybrid. Poor Elvira better starts to avoid higher floors and especially windows.

Let's be fair - Iranian quantum processor from Aliexpress was only slightly less ridiculous than Russian dude pretending to be a robot.

        >Russian officer academies
        >learn there how to war
        I highly fricking doubt it

But it actually makes sense. Russia is an African country in the way it operates (even how it's economy is based on raw resources, not on actual industry) and at the same time it somehow became biggest country in the world.

African countries have high birth rate for meat wave tactics, but they don't have funds for this NATO nonsense, like "air superiority" or whatever. If African youth was send to western military academies they would be teached on things they would've never had chance to apply.

Tbf they're describing an algo for AShM that has "quantum" in its name (Quantum-behaved Particle Swarm Optimization), the board itself wasn't important. Twitter journos distorted that topic.

What I'm wondering is what is it about Iran that allows them to produce these by the thousands but not Russia?

It's not sanctions because Iran has been under economic sanctions in some form or another since 1979. They were able to build their kamikaze drone industry IN SPITE of sanctions.
