Redpill me on orienteering. It seems delightfully autistic but that would mean it attracts weirdos. Is military style land nav better?

It was my favorite activity for gym class in elementary school
i understand that these days they dont even teach orienteering or skiing in middle school
there are now adult people who have never held a compass in their hands or put on a pair of skis on their lives and rely on youtube to teach them how to do these things
>skiing
where did you grow up wtf
Probably in some richgay or upper middle-class suburb. I grew up and went to school in an industrial, working-class suburb where kids skateboarded but never skied or snowboarded. Skiing was what the snooty upper classes did.
Finland and most of our winter gym classes consisted of skiing in one way or the another, sometimes ski orienteering sometimes ski polo or skiing competitions etc
granted this was 30 years ago but what ive gathered it was pretty basic everywhere if you dont count big city schools who had to take the bus to the nearest ski track and it was like a special class they did every now and then
This americans don't get how bad their edumaction is. We got taught this kind of thing in my country also. Prior to the age of 15 at my point.
Thats why we invented the internet and spaceflight
So GPS would make you homosexuals obsolete
what do you mean? Internet wasn't invented in the US and for spaceflight you literally had a nazi for that
The older I get the more I become acutely aware of how shit our education is. I feel for my friends and classmates in HS who were not college type guys who got completely abandoned and denigrated by our education system for not being suited to a college path. Most found their way into trades and are doing fine, but they couldve been helped along more without the humiliation of being treated like a dumb kid their last couple years of high school.
>America bad because they don't teach skiing
Ok
My school used to x-country skiing every winter. I live in New England and not from a richgay area.
Orienteering is good, but the distances are shorter than military land nav. It's a good exercise though and it will help you get used to walking through the woods and finding waypoints. I'm not sure how to practice land nav outside of orienteering.
You lack the mental capacity--stick to the GPS.
You pick a place and go there. It's pretty straight forward really.
Surveyors do more code compliance and paperwork than surveying.
just become a surveyor and get paid to do it
Do surveyors make a livable wage?
Like most jobs today, no, no they do not unless youre a boomer whose been doing it for 40 years or own your own business. Until we get the israelites and greedy whites out of our financial system, they will further enslave us every year with their central banking currency cattle scam
If you do, become a field guy. Not the registered surveyor type who gets crammed in an office 10 hours a day.
Either way, most of them just use gps/robotic total stations with a tablet and shoot a bunch of points these days. Then the office chump connects the dots in cad. For layout they do the same thing in reverse. Not really any actual orienteering anymore
Orienteering was a merit badge I got sometime in the mid-90's.
>It seems delightfully autistic
It is
>but that would mean it attracts weirdos
It may
Chances are, you won't run into any weirdos if you're orienteering deep enough in the woods
Great fun when it's also a race through sparsely wooded/fairly open and hilly country. Open enough to run in but not so open that it doesn't restrict your view of the surrounding landscape quite a lot.
It's actually full of normies, at least where I live
I remember it as a boring but unique part of PE
was probably boring because you had to use baby level maps
>Is military style land nav better
It's the exact same except in a specified timeline carrying more weight.
>military style land nav
yea just get in vicinity of your checkpoint while carrying 50kg then box around for 3 hours before it comes over the radio that staff forgot to place your checkpoint.
if you want a sport/group/competition, then do rogaining/orienteering
if you want to get better at navigation, then just pick a random point on a map, try get there, then once you think you are there check with a gps to see how close you were and what you fricked up on.
