Red Pill me on solar panels

I see headlines about breakthroughs in solar panels becoming cheap and super efficient but they are very expensive. This doesn’t include the batteries to store the power either. Is it best to get the most expensive kind? Is there any way to make anything from from raw materials for cheaper? Maybe over Alibaba?

Solar panels are cheap as shit. You can get 450W panels for $150. There's no way you can PrepHole a decent 450W panel for less than that, you couldn't even do it for $300. Whether or not it's worth buying panels depends on where you are, what your use case is and what kind of options you have from the grid.
That aside, the news about solar breakthroughs and battery breakthroughs are usually clickbait for morons.

More like why do scummy installers charge 15k for a 5k system. A large commercial 575W panel is cheaper now than a domestic 250W panel was 10 years ago

Uh, you don't just slap a couple panels on your roof and plug them into your breaker panel. You need to properly size the wire, you need an inverter or a battery, everything has to be carefully wired and tested.
Even after all that they're only 20% efficient or so and contain lots of fun toxic chemicals. They're a meme power source.

            >don't just slap panels on your roof
You literally can, just do it yourself. An entire array costs 1500 these days, add a few hundred more for wiring and a decent inverter and you're good

Do you have an inverter that can handle batteries? There's a myriad of schemes, but the only one that has reasonable prices and performance is 48V LFP directly connected to the solar inverter (as opposed to using indirect AC-coupled storage inverter).

most of those breakthroughs usually fail on two fronts, longevity and capacity for cold. Solid state batteries are coming to market though.
