What I don’t get is why they got so autistic about muh homemade weapons with both the Arjun and Tejas when their entire military, including the components for the previously mentioned vehicles, is already sourced from 10 different countries at once anyways. Christ even their one locally built gas turbine ramp carrier has been a work in progress for over two decades and is billions over budget, and *just* finished sea trials. I know what we’re talking about but it just seems like their priorities are all out of whack to the most comical degrees possible.
Leo 2A4 wannabe
it seems shit
even if they're a major country they should've just swallowed their pride and ask for technology transfer/local production of Abrams/Leo 2/K2
Miserable failure of a project. I've heard "1980s design" thrown around a lot, and it doesn't even come close to describing how bad it is. India has produced 150 of what is effectively a Leopard 2 clone in all of the years (18) it has been in development. Keep in mind the US built roughly 900 abrams tanks per year in the 1980s.
the Type 99 is older than one might think, it was essentially China's attempt at replicating the traits of the T72/T80, so i don't think it has blowout panels.
i know that the more recent Type 15 has blowout panels
no idea.
Probably better than the Arjun though. Probably also better than most Russian models seeing as China actually has a respectable budget that corruption hasn't eaten alive like it was in Russia (yet)
Anon, what makes you think that China's military budget hasn't been eaten alive by corruption like it was in Russia?

I'm sure China's military leadership is corrupt in its own right but Russia is literally on a whole other level of corruption on the economic and state levels. China's governmental structure is also designed in a manner that corruption lessens the higher up you go. China's low level officials and officers are corrupt, but the higher up you get, the less money is embezzled. Xi himself is not a financially corrupt man, he doesn't care about personal wealth. Putin steals money like nobody's business.
Other than that, even if China is just as corrupt, China's GDP is several times larger so it just overall has more money to spare even if the same proportion was lost to corruption as in Russia.

Ah, that makes sense, thanks for explaining that

Because in China, corruption is culturally highly frowned upon, whereas in Russia it's considered completely normal and acceptable, if not even recommendable.

while this might be anecdotally true, the concept of corruption in any military exists as a fact of life. To be sure - it may not be as catastrophically bad as it is in Russia, but blanket statements like "corruption at the high levels doesn't happen in China" is dumb

>but blanket statements like "corruption at the high levels doesn't happen in China" is dumb
it does absolutely happen, but the difference between Xi and Putin's regimes is that Putin is as corrupt as his cronies, but Xi HATES the idea of government officials mismanaging money for their own gain.
Here's a leaked US document describing Xi Jinping's personal traits from a whistleblower. >1. According to a well connected Embassy contact, Xi Jinping is "exceptionally ambitious," confident and focused, and has had his "eye on the prize" from early adulthood. Unlike many youth who "made up for lost time by having fun" after the Cultural Revolution, Xi "chose to survive by becoming redder than the red." He joined the Party and began mapping out a career plan that would take him to the top of the system. In our contact's view, Xi is supremely pragmatic and a realist, driven not by ideology but by a combination of ambition and "self-protection." >2. Xi is not corrupt and does not care about money, but could be "corrupted by power," in our contact's view.

No. He's plain not all that interested in personal wealth and never was. Xi's in it for a mix of personal power and security. Money is just a tool to him and he's never chased after it.

>Because in China, corruption is culturally highly frowned upon
Specifics seem to be good. It's really heavy and bulky tho, maybe too much for its own good. Between AT ordnance and armor, usually the former wins. And i don't like that square looking turret, it should have more sloped surfaces. Overall It looks like a modern version of the Pkfw VI tiger
>Shitty ammo >Shitty turret protection >No blast doors/blowout panels >The hull's lower plate doesn't even have composite armor >Mk.2 is slow >Rifled gun will have to be replaced in future models
Already outdated the day firs got of from production line. Weird mix of t-72 and Leo a4 design.
If they fix the turret, ammunition rack and buy some good optics, gun stabilization and so on, it can be ok.
>"In development" since 1974 >Ultra corrupt and incompetent development program. >"Finished" in 1996 >Takes 8 years to build 6 tanks >Kind of in service by 2009 >Upgrade program immediately started because the MK1 tanks are shit. >Mostly out of service from 2013-2016 due to a lack of parts, despite being expressly designed as an indigenous vehicle. >Back in service >Upgraded version shown off in 2018, still shit. >Indian army holds a corrupt trial of the T-90 and selects it for future purchases >Indian army decides it won't buy more Arjuns
It's basically Indian military incompetence on treads. It's the product of extreme corruption that in turn somehow got beaten out by the T-90 thanks to EVEN MORE military corruption.
>somehow got beaten out by the T-90 thanks to EVEN MORE military corruption.
Because the Arjun is total shit, made by poomonkeys that claim to be engineers but skip the entire process of combining technologies to make something as relatively complex as a tank.
Even China wasn't moronic to skip entire generations of tech development and bought/copied Soviet designs and refined them into something "better".
India would have been better served spending the money they spent on Arjun, buying out a T-72/T-90 production line learning from there. But they didn't and instead tried to push past 40 years of MBT engineering without the experience of decades of AFV design as well.
aggressively mediocre, but what are their options really? they want to build their own tanks and their first one is going to suck, because building tanks is harder than people on this board make it out to be. they could just forget the whole thing and license the KF51 or K2
They're a third world country, they never had a chance. They're unironically worse off than countries like Brazil that have built AFVs in the past. Their only realistic options were to buy tanks from a first or second world country, instead of doing the pooperpower 2020 LARP
>mediocre
No. The K1 is mediorce. The Type 90 is mediocre. The Challenger 1 is mediocre. The Arjun, compared against tanks 30 years older than itself is just fricking bad.
It gathers many of the worst elements from the Challenger 1 (rifled gun, non expandable ammo storage constraining penetrator length, unprotected ammo storage, functionally unarmored lower frontal plate) and transplants them into a bargain bin Leopard 2, with all of it's positive features being botched as well.
It doesn't even come in at a decent bridge crossing weight despite it's heavily compromised frontal protection. The turd weighs 58 metric tons stock, and bloats to an Abramsesque 69 tons after much needed applique armor.
I understand the importance of developing domestic industry, but to actually go ahead and produce the design is mind boggling.
If Arjun is so bad why do Americans rip their ass open to build thousands of tanks?
India is the lowest quality nation on Earth.
Is that just a Type 69 with a body kit?
Minecraft tank
Why can't they use toilet paper bros
by not using toilet paper they have more room for ammunition in the tanks
from the country with no sewer system, what, you expected it to NOT be shit?
India is still buying T-90s from Russia. That says everything.

It takes some REALLY incompetent designing work to make the ZTZ99 look top-of-the-line
ZTZ-99 has blowout panels or no?

It's a joke.Indians tried to build a tank but lacked the engineering know-how,industrial base and procurement system for such a task.
I heard the armor is quite good, except for all the weak spots around the optics
