Re. Societal collapse prep/Wilderness survival

I really do feel like things are getting to the point of no return. At this point, in my opinion, it’s only a matter of time until shit breaks down and self sufficiency will be key.

I have been acquiring the requisite supplies and getting into good physical health. Do you fellow anons have your own supplies? If so, take a picture and send.

I believe I have most everything I need, safe a couple odds and ends. I do have a trauma kit and first aid kit on the way and should be here within the next couple days. The only thing I’m missing that I haven’t already ordered is a HAM radio and a rifle. Any recommendations?

And yes, all of that does fit into my backpack (75L) and on my person. All n’ all, it weighs about 45lbs before i put in the MRE’s, which weighs an additional 10lbs. Add in a couple pounds for water and ammo, At 60lbs it’s still only about 30% of my body weight, and I have been trekking in the desert to get used to the weight. So far so good. What are /misc/‘s thoughts on SHTF prepping, and is there anything odd that most people don’t think about getting when getting their preps in order?

I got my pistol first, and then all of the supplies. My thinking is, what good is an AR if you don’t have food shelter and water sorted out? Now I’m looking into getting an AR. Thinking a PSA Sabre AR15. And yes, I am a bit of a rookie when it comes to owning firearms, but I used to bow hunt and trap quite a bit and go solo camping so on that front I should be okay. Any recs when it comes to affordable AR’s?

        You have too much shit.
        Find your biome.
Watch airforce survival guide for that specific region.
        Learn it front and back.
Lose 90% of that excess shit.
At the moment you're just back yard camping. Do you anticipate driving around all of that shit? You got a wheelbarrow or something? You going to be calling in airsupport and taking on the nogs like Rambo?
Learn what the basic requirements are for life. Obtain those. A pistol and rifle are cool, but learning to trap and clean wildlife will serve you better. Less noise less confrontation.

I dunno anon, you may be right, but I think it’s more or less the correct amount to be self sufficient for a longer period of time. I have learned the biome, which is the desert, which why I bought very lightweight breathable clothing to protect my skin from the sun whilst not causing me to overheat. I mean I know it looks like a lot, but once I sort it out and put it into organized dry bags and throw it all into the backpack it really does compact quite well. I have food shelter water and fire sorted out, tools for hunting bushcraft, maps and literature for first aid and survival (hard to memorize it all), and a way to defend myself. You are right though, I do need to work on my primitive bushcraft abilities, and as I do that maybe I can loose some of the “backyard camping” supplies that I have. But I don’t think a 1 man tent, tarp, and bivy bag is too much. Not like I’m bringing a propane camp stove with me.

I take it you're in the south west. It's pretty rural. I've been up and down i-10 from San Antonio to California. Probably the least desirable biome to be stranded in. I personally would rather test my luck by staying put in the city than run for the desert. Depending on the time of year the south west can severely dehydrate you in hours and getting to ground water is close to impossible. The water table is just too deep.
At least in the city you can wait for the army to relocate you and provide necessities. If you're in El Paso there is plenty of military there. If you already had land and working water pumps I would be more willing to say "yeah man get a bunch of equipment and fortify" even in the desert. But trying to live off the desert? Nah.... lolololol

Fair enough, anon. I appreciate your assessment, and you figure my geographic region correctly. I figure the central Texas hill country wouldn’t be as bad as further south where there’s almost no foliage or freshwater sources. You may be right about the military, but also, I wouldn’t trust the govt in a SHTF situation.

There are several different regions in Texas and they all have unique characteristics, and lot of similarities.
I use the word biome as a general descriptor.
The airforce has made a lot of media in concern of crashing in different areas of the world and what to do when you need a few days to wait for rescue.

i get it, i was curious what manuals they have for specific regions. im aware of the more general ones and have seen military guides for artic, desert, islands, mountains, ocean and rainforest. but i was curious if things for more specific than that.
but yeah, besides being stranded in the ocean, desert is a real predicament.

That's true, but you didn't say a few weeks, you said a few days while you wait for rescue. There is a huge difference. I can sit and conserve energy for a few days if I'm just waiting for a rescue. I know it might vary by biome, but it's basically the same. A few weeks changes everything.

        it's called a ruger 10/22
will kill everything from rabbits to deer to humans if need be. you can carry tons of rounds at a time too.
gay-r15s are a stupid platform. the mechanism itself is crap requiring tons of cleaning, easily broken if you fall on it, overpriced, and the rounds themselves are super weak. they were designed not for lethality, but for making the enemy keep their heads down until artillery or airstrikes come in. unless you have a militia with air and artillery support that is very very very well supplied it's almost always a bad choice. plus it make you look like a combatant to anyone that you come across. think about it - if you saw yourself in the woods, would you shoot first out of fear?
in afghanistan it was routine that us forces would get pinned down and then have to run away constantly because they were outgunned. they had bolt action .303s and .308 rifles etc, long guns that do some damage on impact. they have hundreds of yards more range than ARs, and the americans couldn't shoot back or call in artillery on populated locations.
the handgun is great for self defence. just think about what you will be using the rifle for? if it's hunting a .22 is a no brainer. plan on staying out of combat unless you know what you are doing with several other people that know what they are doing. highly trained guerrillas do not get into firefights if they can avoid them.
back to hunting, the .22 can be shot with much less noise and recoil, thus not drawing as much attention and scaring away less game. if you shoot a rabbit with something bigger it will just be a stain on the ground. you seem to have experience in this area so play to your strengths and avoid combat at all costs.
here's a pdf on how shitty the ar15 really is, put out by the us army

Don't listen to this lapping idiot. "Damage"?
          >gimme a clip...

22lr is a great round for shtf because you can carry a lot of it, and animals are generally stupid enough to come within 100 yards, which is as far as you want to try to hit things with a .22. For that same reason 5.56 is a great round because it's less than half the weight of .308, but has enough energy to carry it out past 500 yards. If you're going to live innawoods or anywhere other than urban/suburban setting then distance is your only real defense against the human element. Accuracy isn't a linear relationship to distance, it drops off significantly after about 150-200 yards, especially when under stress. 5.56 is enough to keep people at a long arms length and maybe make them think about whether or not it's even worth it to try to close that distance.
Also, ditch the trauma kit. If you take an injury that requires tourniquet or chest seals in a world without hospitals or medicine, especially if you're alone, you're fricked anyways.
You should get yourself a nice lightweight 22lr rifle and at least 1000rnds. And also a lightweight AR platform with irons and an optic to let you reach out to 600 yards. Carry as little as you need to for that. Maybe 5 mags. Should be enough to break contact from a small force, or ambush them and take their guns.

            >If you're going to live innawoods or anywhere other than urban/suburban setting then distance is your only real defense against the human element.
I mean, you're not going to be shooting 500 yrds or even 100 in a dense forest anon. You're better off hiding in a tree with a knife or setting traps and avoiding clearings.

the pic i posted showed that the round is not lethal beyond 200 yards, and must go through about 5 inches of tissue before muh tublins happen
shooting at people 500 yards away is murder in most cases
staying out of combat is best. 99% of the time the weapon will be used for food gathering.
.22lr is unironically more dangerous than .223 at long range
.22 can even enter the body, then hit a bone like in your arm, then travel along the bone and into the chest, then into the heart. it didn't have enough energy to break the bone mind you.

I’d head out west Texas way, I have a few spots picked out that I would go to initially, and then as the situation changes I would consult my book containing topographic maps for the entirety of Texas and figure it out from there.

            Anonymous

Good. My only advice would be to roughly plan out a route to get there. You don't want to use highways even if you have a car and you also want to get there earlier rather than later. If possible, stock them with non-perishables ahead of time.
Since you're planning on trekking through the desert, you should bring more water. Maybe a life straw or filter.
60lb is a lot of weight to be hiking through the desert. If I were you, I'd reconsider the large knife since you already have a knife, a multi-tool, and a hatchet. Also, the drivers on the multitool are the same size as your screwdrivers. A HAM radio would be more weight, but information that would be useful in any situation. Lastly, I don't see any fire starting equipment, but maybe it's just in one of the bags.

Yeah, I’ve been doing so, luckily my maps contain backroads that aren’t even on google maps so I’ve been sorting out the way using those, but you’re right, I do need to plan it out in its entirety. I also will take your advice on stocking some areas with some further supplies in advance, very good idea. I do have a life straw there, as well as water purification tablets. Also I have a fire steel, multiple lighters, a zippo lighter, and matches. Thanks for being so thorough anon! Greatly appreciated.

Ditch the zipper for a titan light. Zippos leak fuel, and need constant refueling. Titan light is water proof and also has a rubber seal inside that prevents the fuel escaping.

Hello fellow Texan. West Texas is going to be problematic due to water scarcity. Not many running rivers, lakes basically nonexistent except for San Angelo, Robert Lee, etc. Wells are drying up.
You may want to rethink destination.

Better bet would be east Texas if you're dead set on surviving in Texas. Anywhere along the gulf will at least provide you with rain on a regular basis. Personally, I would venture into Louisiana. Lots of trees and water in Louisiana. Look at the US map. If you see green with splashes of blue you're going to have a better experience..

Problem with any city or suburb gay thinking they'd just head out and find a rural location - property is owned by others and if you think they will welcome a stranger onto their property, think again. Any desirable location is already set up with solar powered motion detection and you'll be quickly found. If luck holds out, you'll simply be escorted off property. In a shtf situation, you'll most likely be shot.
Option #2 is what I'll be doing if you end up on my property, nothing personal.

I've posted this so many times, this is the first time for you. 4 years ago I was you. I realized I was fricked chasing the town/city dream. I looked in very small rural areas for property. I purchased a old ranch house, with small acreage for 42K because it was a former meth house most recently. Immediately sank 10K into remediation of meth chemical and general trashing of place. Today, my property is complete paid off. The only thing you cannot change about a property is it's location. I have a highly defensible perimeter and everything I need.

you shouldnt build pic related, you should be digging underground.

rockslides, trees and avalanches from heavy earthquakes can be very dangerous.

you gotta walk around and check them all out even the hard to access ones.
you also dont want to be too deep in because if shit goes down you could end up getting trapped in there.
So you gotta know your cave, if there is a second entrance, how to escape fast etc.
some prep work for the cave will also be required. its also often difficult to judge how stable a cave is.

There's but going to be listed on Zillow etc. You have to research the area you want to be and then take a weekend trip. Drive along County and Rural Roads looking for distressed or abandoned properties. Make list and take pictures for reference for when you get home. Then contact tax office for the country where property is, contact owner. Keep doing this, you'll definitely find something.

Top priority would to be getting out of a city if you're in one. Cities are death traps on many layers. Even if you somehow did manage to strap down and pull through for a month or so you'll soon find yourself a prime target for those who were no prepared. Man is both your best ally and worst enemy.

in an event of a massive food shortage yes, cities will become chaotic. Most people won't be prepared and the ones that can manage to flee will poor into the surrounding rural areas.

Like I said earlier, I got the basics first before any kind of rifle. That’s what I’m looking into first. Also I have spent much time outside, and I used to bow hunt, but all of these supplies are more suited to long term survival for potentially weeks, which I have not done solo before. about firearms i can tell you about not carrying too much ammo for your sideweapon, we don't have big animals like bears here so i just carry a small .380acp pistol and one box of ammo for it, wouldnt carry a centerfire rifle bc no big animals plus avoiding confrontation with humans is always better, unless you are forced to it and set up an ambush.

2 minute lifestraw under microscope video

That's true, but you didn't say a few weeks, you said a few days while you wait for rescue. There is a huge difference. I can sit and conserve energy for a few days if I'm just waiting for a rescue. I know it might vary by biome, but it's basically the same. A few weeks changes everything.

Getting shelter from the elements is priority number 1.
Priority number 2 is finding a water source. Priority number 3 is finding food. Everything past priority 3 is luxury.
Knowing what plants are edible, different sources of water, trapping wildlife, is all that is needed after sufficient shelter is in place, something to keep you dry and cool or warm.
Idk what to say about the campers.

Op, this guy is correct. If/When society breaks down, humans will always barter until it breaks down further. The man that knows how to use tools and create, build, repair--and pass those skills on, can prevent the barter system from breaking down even further. A tradesman will be king in that system.

Because once you fall below bartering, you go to barbarism. And the only thing that matters at that point is if you can kill your fellow man before they kill you.

As far as the contents of your bag, I see a lot of useful items. It looks good for a solo self-sufficient man to barely survive in the wilderness.

I think society will break down in several stages though. I don't know these exact stages. Your contents are for one of the latest stages.

It would be wise to stick with like-minded people as community for the earlier stages. You need a fertile plot of land and be able to hold it. As a community, you will need to be very well armed with rifles to fend off hordes of Black folk. Killing them will likely provide mainly clothes, useless electronics, israeliteelries and junk food as the spoils. Because that's what Black folk see as valuable, even in a survival scenario.

Eventually, you will be defending from other communities like yours, it will likely become tribe like. Bartering may be useful here, but I wouldn't fully trust anyone outside of your community except for an economic relationship. I wouldn't let them get too close and gain intel.

Then you always have to worry about the government. This might be the greatest single threat aside from nature itself. The higher ups, will be living in underground bases with their families, already retrofitted and self-sufficient for a societal break-down. The ones that didn't have clearance to bring their families down to safety, will likely be in communities like yours protecting their families. I'd see these ones as probably your greatest allies, as they will be well armed, trained, and bitter at the government for not accepting their families. But they might not be so trusting
          of you.

Climate Change will cause social collapse within 20 years maybe even before 2030.

You need to learn high intensity gardening and preserving food. Also consider a rabbit farm for meat.

Hunting may become unreliable in a social collapse so you need ways of producing your own food.

Your best bet is somewhere in Alaska.

      Anonymous

Rabbit farm eh? I’ll have to check that out. Had chickens growing up, is the premise similar? Make a small enclosure and they’ll reproduce in short spans of time so you can harvest them? Is there a bigger problem with predators going after them when compared to chickens? Or is it pretty comparable?

        Anonymous

you don't need much and they don't need heat for winter just something to keep them sheltered. You can start with 3 for breeding. They reproduce as fast as.. well rabbits lol and don't require a sophisticated diet. Good source of protein and their droppings can be used as fertilizer, if you can take care of chickens rabbits will be fine.

hardy vegetables like potatoes, radishes and carrots. You can even practice "pot gardening" which i suggest you do. Potatoes can be grown in large buckets or they even have fabric "potato sacks"

with that you might be able to make it out of an urban area but if you dont have a bug out location to go to you are dead.
if you live in the far out suburbs maybe a few weeks if you dont get a pack of Black folk targeting you.
to live for years you need acres in a hard to reach location, lots of fuel for generator, solar, large tanks for water, a well, farm animals and a stock pile of feed stored in a way where it wont get bad or infested and some heavy machinery to support.
its almost impossible now for 99% of the people to survive post apocalypse.
and those 1% who "live great" in the first decades after collapse might not make it.
you arent seeing semiconductors come back for 30-50 years if 99% die off.
a deep collapse would be bad. most wont make it. and those that do have a good chance of dying while milking a cow rather than seeing high 2020 level tech become cheap and routine again.

You need a bug out location to get to if you do have to bug out.
Have you tried getting with a MAG (Mutual Assistance Group)? If not I would highly suggest you do as that would increase your chances of survival.
Start with the basics, shelter, water, food, first aid, and a means of self-defense. Your location will dictate the importance of the order of items. If you live in the middle of the city I would suggest you get the hell out now as cities are a death trap.

Yeah fair, not sure of the terrain you're preparing for. If you're planning on spending the a lot of time in the woods a slightly chunkier hatchet will save you an incredible amount of energy. Your machete would probably do the work of that hatchet you have now. I love chopping wood, and have done a lot of hours with different axes and hatchets. The amount of labor the right one can save, is significant. They make some good ones out of composite materials now that are light and basically indestructible.

I've been poor my entire life and have had to endure what they call "rough living," most of it. Been homeless all throughout the Winter with single digit temps, spent months in the woods (Appalachian Trail), had to deal with bed bugs/wasp/etc infestations... I am "prepped" psychologically and physically. Most people would completely fold under the shit I've endured. I don't need supplies, because I'm just going to stumble upon yours when you've offed yourself or through raids or hiding in a tree with a knife. Yeah, I have some shit, but until you've actually done it, you dont realize how little you actually need to survive. I prefer to stay light and use my fishing/foraging/hunting skills and either acquire shit on my way or setup a vast network of resource nodes I can access regardless of my location. At least you have a mindset of staying mobile, but that's a lot of fricking weight that's going to slow you down even if you're in top physical shape. Don't tell me you're gonna be wearing body armor too?

Best advice I can give to anyone when SHTF. Dig a fricking hole and hibernate for 6 months.

Sorry to hear anon, but your experience will stand you in good stead. You wouldn't even need violence , small groups would gladly want someone like you around for your knowledge and xp.

Actually surviving in the woods for months is beyond most people, carrying all this shit around is going to exhaust you and most of it won't be used.

If you are in the north hemisphere you probably need a small properly made knife (no operator chink made shit) and a woodsman axe, e.g. gransfor Bruk.

UK has a dying bushcraft tradition , we just don't have the land anymore.

Well shieeet Black, sounds like a mf been ‘round the block.

In all seriousness though, I’m sure you are correct in saying that it’s surprising how little one needs to survive, but a few odds and ends that help out can’t possibly hurt that much, can they? Like sure i don’t need a one man tent, I could always just use a tarp and make a shelter that way, but it is nice, small and lightweight, and helps to keep any potentially hazardous wildlife away. Being a larger dude who is in fairly good physical condition, it really doesn’t weigh me down in that much, but you’re right, it still does slow me down. But I am also looking at longevity/endurance as supposed to speed/agility. And no, not planning on wearing body armor as well.

Yes to compass but you also need maps and basic navigation skills. But a good compass is lightweight and invaluable for what it provides , nobody does serious innawoodsing without one unless they stick to areas they are familiar with.

                Anonymous

most of prep and survival tools are for marginal situations and redundancy. This is due to the fact you only die once. A small well made compass could save your ass in a handful of situations.

Compass is helpful, get some topographic maps of your area or where you’re planning on going, and I’d recommend 550-Paracord. Durable and lightweight.

Exactly. Lots of old Indian campsites in my area. I have picked up many native hand tools which are still good today. I also bought a flint knapping set, collected good flint pieces, watched YouTube vids, and learned to knap my own arrowheads.
This was mostly for fun, I have good bow and many arrows, shafts, replacement parts. Someone earlier posted about gunfire attracting attention. My ammo is fur defense only. Food can be taken by bow or trapping.

    OP, serious question.
You planning to stay where you are and “bug in” if things get sporty, or are you expecting to go somewhere else and ride it out?

Without digging into your thread I would like to note that you need to budget 1 litre of water for every 2 hours of physical effort and a single litre for every 6 hours of just fricking off.
A good lensatic compass will save your life, buy one. USGS offers excellent topographic maps for cheap. Get one for where you are, and one for where you plan to end up.

Rifle? Start with a Henry AR-7, anyone who says otherwise can frick right off.
A Ruger SR 22 takedown is also a solid choice.
We are talking survival, long term. Not mad max gunfights.

      Anonymous

Bugging out. Yeah I was looking into the USGS topo maps, I still will probably acquire some in the future, but I found a book of pretty in depth topographic maps for the entirety of Texas for the same price as one usgs map.

Water will be crucial, I do have multiple ways of getting and purifying water, but the more the merrier.

Will take a look into the guns you mentioned! Ty for your response!

    Get...
Steel cook pot, at least 64 Oz, with a handle for hanging it.
6" full tang knife for doing all that gay YouTube survival shit.
    Folding saw.
    Smaller knife for smaller things.
Fishing line, hooks, a little bit of bait to get you started. Make your own bobbers and use a stick for a rod.
Snare wire (it weighs nothing and can be useful in the rare case you can use it).
    22lr rifle and a 1000 rounds.
10x10 tarp. Or a durable poncho, that can double as a tent and a rain layer.
Paracord, or nylon cord, or some kind of useful rope like thing you can carry a lot of.
Some sort of thing to sleep in that doesn't care if it gets wet. Wool blanket or poncho liner. Don't carry too much sleeping material, wear most of what you'll sleep in.
Soap, washcloth, some ethanol in a flask, booboo kit to prevent little cuts from becoming big problems.

Your backpack shouldn't weigh more than 45 pounds. Most of what you need should be on your person. Lots of pockets and pouches. Make sure you own some durable clothing. Learn to waterproof your clothing and carry a little extra with you.

i did enough field problems in the army to know that your loadout is missing some key shit. the idea here is to fill your ruck with enough critical items to sustain you while still being able to hump rough terrain. this means being extremely economical with your load and knowing what you must have versus what you might want to have.

the most critical items on your packing list besides socks are a sleep system and portable shelter. sleeping outside is a miserable affair that will crush and freeze the frick out of you unless you plan for it. you increase your chances of dying exponentially even in hot weather by failing to pack the right sleep gear in your ruck.

next on the list is a canteen and some kind of water purification system if no water resupply is available. cryptosporidium does not care how hard you are and will destroy you so do not forget your grail filter some other slick shit like that. nobody beyond dirty-ass curryBlack folk and africans can drink raw water and not end up close to death.

medical items like foot care and wound management shit are also critical. fricked feet or infected skin mean you cannot move and if you cannot move then you are dead. having an aid kit with duct tape, oral rehydration salts, super glue, clotting agents, baby wipes, and antiseptics will save your life in the event that you get hurt.

next is utility shit like firestarters, gloves, bungie cords, poncho, battery-powered GPS with extra batteries, red-lens flashlight, radios, pace counters and some of the shit in your picture. do not forget to bring a fricking lighter and cotton balls covered in vaseline. getting a flame going and keeping it burning is harder than most people realize.

top all that off with some cold gear and extra uniforms and you are already humping maybe 50 pounds plus your weapon and ammo. that does not sound like much but it absolutely is when you have to spend your day moving under it. this is the price you pay to survive.
