Big truck drums vary in size and weight. The main function of that one is as an adapter to offer a larger surface then the small cooker beneath it currently does. Any suitably heavy pipe section would also work so the smart play is like OP did and use what you have. It's certainly strong and good for a century or more so why not?
Scrap yards and truck repair shops will have them. I'd ask at a truck repair shop what they want for a worn out drum if you go that route.
Used cookers are so cheap that I'd hunt one rather than buy a burner separately.
The cooker is just acting as a stand. It doesn't do anything, it was rusted out. The ring I have the expanded metal welded to for the grill was the top ring off that cooker, actually.
You need to consult a civil engineer, they are full of deadly chemical that never come out, only boomers want that globohomosexual cooking pod shit, da joos invented them to kill off the white man with latent toxins and greasy goyslop , but none of that matters because you'll never do it anyway.

Can you recognize a single bit of absurdly over the top shit posting mockery of the typical moron autist response infesting this forum of late?
That's a rhetorical question btw.
can u just tell me whether or not a UDS can grilll and bbq too, from what I've read the ones that have a seperate smoking chamber are better in some sense
"UDS" means nothing to me, people have been making BBQ grills and smokers out of steel drums since there have been steel drums and they work fine.
Separate smoke chambers are better in general for when you want to do large batches and/or the food being smoked is heat sensitive, otherwise you can just use a basic grill and wood chips + indirect heat.

UDS is 'ugly drum smoker', thought that was the more common name but yeah just a drum smoker. i just dont' want to biuld this then realize it's insufficient for BBQ or grilling and feel compelled to get yet another thing that takes up space

I know what it stands for but there's all kinds of variations and configurations for how to make smokers and grills with drums and I'm sure that if theres someone ready to fight and hurl insults over what is/isnt a "real UDS" they are on this site and trembling at the opportunity to pounce. For me its better to not even dignify it by using the term or caring what it might signify.
In fact the insanely opinionated rancor against repurposing shipping containers seen here has a nearly identical counterpart within the world of smokers and BBQ grills, which was part of the reason for the original response preemptively mocking those people and their knee jerk contrarianism.
Like all vrills and smokers they have good points and not so good points and learning how to adapt to both for what you are doing is the key to satisfactory results.

After doing more thinking I conclude I don't want to manage the high maintenance of an offset and like that drum smokers are set and forget. Given that you suggest it can perform adequately for grilling and bbq, it seems perfect.
Is it safe to eat stuff from such kind of grills? I mean, that doesn't look like stainless steel so I really don't know if the rust and other stuff on the grate may affect the food?
You casted it yourself?
I cast it... out of the scrap bin at work and into my shed where I threw a railroad plate on the bottom
based, how heavy is it? Looks like a big piece.

Probably about 60lbs
As long as you can scoot the coals to one side to let steaks simmer
Brake drums also make popular forges.
outta my way b***h, im jackin this thread.
should i build a UDS as my first smoker? can it grill and bbq ok too?

it's food grade and I'll definitely do it if this the route i decide to go, homosexual. they're pretty trivial to build
Can you form a single coherent thought without including half a dozen buzzwords? moron

I liked your OG post btw
Serious question here:
Is it safe to eat stuff from such kind of grills? I mean, that doesn't look like stainless steel so I really don't know if the rust and other stuff on the grate may affect the food?
I'd be more worried about asbestos from the brake drum
Drums are not shoes and not made of asbestos. If clean of brake dust no worries. It's not a sponge.
Short answer: Do you really have to ask stupid questions?
Long answer: wire steel the displaced metal grill and coat it with oil and let shit cook
